A warm enveloping aroma welcomes you as you reach the car park of Pensons, Lee Westcott’s restaurant situated on the Worcestershire-Herefordshire border. Now into its fourth month of opening there are some new dishes on the menu to showcase an abundance of exciting local ingredients.
Building on Lee’s ethos of ‘Estate to plate’, Pensons is committed to using, where possible, produce that is sourced locally and sustainably. Lee’s refined and creative style has encouraged and inspired an exciting range of go-to food and drink producers from around the region to supply high quality produce to the restaurant,
Lee’s menus draw inspiration from cleverly researched seasonal produce at its peak – new dishes to grace the menu for May include a starter of Wye Valley asparagus, home-made ricotta, chamomile and wild garlic – picked from the Estate and blitzed into a wonderful rich green puree . There is the clean, crisp starter of scallop, yeast and apple garnished with monk’s beard supplied by the award-winning Wye Valley Salads.
A new introduction on the main course listing is chalk stream trout served with heritage tomato, chicory and smoked roe. It’s a hard decision whether to opt for this or the middle white pork from Legge’s of Bromyard, nettles (freshly picked by chef, Felix, every morning), asparagus and morels or the classic Herefordshire Herdwick lamb supplied to the restaurant from Richard Vaughan’s outstanding rare breed meats at Huntsham Court Farm in the Wye Valley.
Lee and his team of chefs use cold-pressed rapeseed oil from the Netherwood Estate in place of traditional olive oil, this method preserves the flavour of the oil and nutrients within.
Desserts are simple and stunning, such as the mouth-watering chocolate and strawberry or for something savoury opt for the Neal’s Yard local cheese selection.
Pensons is open for dinner on Wednesday; lunch and dinner on Thursday through to Saturday and for lunch on Sunday. Lunch is from £27 and dinner from £50.
On Friday and Saturday evenings a short Tasting Menu at £60 or a long Tasting Menu at £75 will be served.
