To commemorate Florence Nightingale’s connections to Great Malvern as part of her 200th birthday celebrations, we’ll be hosting two walking tours around Great Malvern on Saturday 12th September at 10:30am and 7pm and Sunday 13th September at 10:30am and 6pm, departing from outside The Unicorn, 2 Bellevue Terrace, Malvern WR14 4PZ.
Discover Florence Nightingale’s Malvern, on a guided-walking tour around the Victorian hill-side town of Great Malvern – once famous for its Water Cure where visitors flocked to the town for health and well-being treatments, with Malvern water as the cure for many ailments and sickness.
This guided walking tour is with local history expert Cora Weaver, who wrote a book called Florence Nightingale and the Water Cure, which tells the story of the life of Florence Nightingale and her connections to our beautiful spa town.
Florence Nightingale habitually avoided hospitals. Usually, when she was ill, she came to Malvern; Malvern was her hospital. She came to Great Malvern once before the Crimean War, when she wrote lively and amusing letters to her sister, and nine times afterwards.
On this guided-walk you will discover where Florence Nightingale stayed, what Malvern was like at the time she was here, what she said about her treatment, what family members said about her illness, something about the doctors who treated her, and what the illnesses were that kept her bedridden for most of her life.
The walk is approximately two miles easy walking, with a bit of uphill and downhill. Please note, no dogs except for Guide Dogs.
To book your walking tour, please book via Malvern Tourist Information Centre on 01684 892289, or pop into meet the team at The Lyttelton Well Courtyard, 6 Church Street, Great Malvern, WR14 2AY. You can also purchase a copy of Cora Weaver’s book, Florence Nightingale and the Water Cure from Malvern Tourist Information Centre and the Great Malvern Priory Book Shop.
