Dark, misty hills, Victorian tales of untimely deaths, unearthly visions haunting orchards: spooky season has landed in The Malverns. Get the whole family together (it’s not safe to go alone…), get dressed up in your most terrifying outfits and enjoy a whole host of paranormal activities across this wonderfully witchy season. Or, if all things paranormal aren’t your bag, there are various Bonfire Night and firework events on bringing much needed light and warmth to the increasingly dark autumnal nights. Many of the events listed take place across the Autumn half term, so provide perfect holiday activities for the kids.
Whether you’re into real life ghost hunting, or have a host of little ghosts, goblins and ghouls to entertain we have gathered together a list of festive treats to get stuck into…
Halloween Shopping
Many of our local shops are getting in the spooky spirit so why not do some shopping. Mr Thom’s Finest Chocolates, Sweets and Ices in Tenbury Wells, have some terrifyingly delicious treats. In Malvern more treats can be found at Chocolate Avenue and Sweet Street. Severn Sweets in Upton upon Severn is putting on some sweet Halloween deals so stock up on treats.
For witches and warlocks, head to the Witchbox website to purchase a monthly subscription box for that perfect spell.
Where to Find That Perfect Pumpkin
Carving pumpkins is an age-old tradition and seeing their glowing smiles in the dark is one that continues year after year. You can even pick your own pumpkin at Clive’s Fruit Farm and Top Barn Farm and Broadfields Pumpkin Patch.
Halloween Events
Tenbury Wells Halloween Trail – Saturday 28 October – Friday 4 November
Dress the children up for Halloween and head to Tenbury Wells for the annual Halloween Window Trail. Upload your photos to social media with #SpookyTenbury and we will share our favourite Halloween Fancy Dress photos via the Visit The Malverns Facebook and Instagram.
Collect your trail sheet from Tenbury Tourist Information Centre from 10am on Saturday 28 October 2023, return it completed and get a free prize.
The Tourist Information Centre is located at 48 Teme Street, Tenbury Wells, WR15 8AA and opens Monday – Saturday: 10am – 4pm.
Great Malvern Festival of Stories for Children – 28 & 29 October
The popular storytelling and puppetry festival is back this Halloween half term weekend. This year the likes of expert stop motion animation filmmakers Aardman will be holding workshops and Horrid Henry author Francesca Simon introduces her newest book. Fantastic storytelling and puppetry will take place in a variety of venues including the Storytelling Tent in the Priory grounds, Lyttleton Well and even inside the belly of a whale! As well as ticketed events there are free storytelling sessions, art activities, film screenings and stalls by local authors across the weekend. Feel free to dress up as your favourite storybook character to add to the fantastical atmosphere.

The Water Cure’s annual Halloween Party has become one of Great Malvern’s most popular spooky events. There’s so much going on for all ages at themed gardens Ralph Court Gardens this Halloween. See their themed sound and lighting displays, animated Halloween characters as well as the usual 3 acre garden displays from Friday 20 October – Saturday 4 November 2023. In the daytime kids will love exploring with fun inflatables, spooky quiz, animatronic witches, themed gardens and free ‘coffin measuring service’. Then, as darkness falls, visual effects and lighting come to life and the Ralph Court Haunted House opens it’s doors to brave guests. Also on between 1 and 4 November there is a Halloween Theatre production of spooky tales free with evening ticket purchase.

With no electricity, an abandoned chapel and a labyrinth of underground tunnels there’s sure to be something spooky going on inside. Explore the whole complex, take part in vigils and seances and use the ghost hunting equipment to summon spirits. This event is suitable for adults only.

Great Malvern is lucky to have an excellent vantage point to make the most of firework’s night in the hills. Wrap up warm, bring a torch and a flask of something hot, and head up to The Beacon for the best views of all The Malvern’s fireworks and bonfires. You are sure to meet a community of others doing the same. Make sure to wear suitable footwear, take care when descending in the dark and bring all your rubbish home with you.
