Event Description
Academy Award winner Asif Kapadia (Amy, Diego Maradona) transforms a dance piece centred around an artificially created being into an immersive and visceral film.
The latest collaboration between the English National Ballet and acclaimed choreographer Akram Khan, this entrancing, dystopian work is set in a dilapidated Artic research station where the creature – stunningly interpreted by dancer Jeffrey Cirio – becomes sentient and falls in love. Drawing on Georg Büchner’s expressionist classic Woyzeck and Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, the production plumbs themes of alienation, impossible love and the desire to belong. Using widescreen, close-ups and textured colours alongside bold sound design, Kapadia highlights the tensions within the piece, making it intimate and accessible. A must for the big screen.
