Event Description
Godard’s deadpan venture into sci-fi mashes together pulp fiction and film noir, crime films to (de)construct a world in which the word ‘love’ has been outlawed.
Secret agent Lemmy Caution, a character rough-hewn Eddie Constantine had played in numerous B-movies, travels (in his Ford Galaxie) to the dystopian technocracy of Alphaville, posing as a journalist. His mission is to destroy the super-computer Alpha 60 that eliminates all traces of individualism and emotion in the city, along with its creator Professor von Braun. Using no special effects or sets, just the glass and concrete architecture of contemporary Paris, office corridors and the toneless voice of Alpha 60, Godard’s vision of the future is a tonguein-cheek critique of present reality.
