Event Description

Walk No: MWF46
Radar comes to Malvern
2 miles; allow 2½ hours

In May 1942 and in great secrecy, 2,500 radar scientists were evacuated from the south coast to Malvern. Visit the key places involved, and learn about this extraordinary story from the chairman of the Malvern Radar And Technology History Society (MRATHS). Hear about the move, the effects on life in Malvern and the impact the scientists of the Telecommunications Research Establishment (TRE) had on the outcome of WWII. Many of those scientists became household names in their later careers.

The route is on pavements, with frequent explanatory stops, with some new insights to be shared. We may be allowed inside the College buildings but this will depend upon what government and College special Covid restrictions are in place.

The walk will end at the Malvern Winter Gardens where refreshments can be purchased.
