Event Description
A group of Mennonite women gather together to debate a course of action in Sarah Polley’s adaptation of Miriam Toews’ bestseller about abuse and solidarity.
Women in the closed community are experiencing bruising and battering. Some are pregnant. The elders claim it is God’s punishment for their sins. But a sighting reveals the truth: the assaults come from their own menfolk. In a sunlit barn, women exchange views: do nothing, stay to change the status quo, or do they leave? Dressed plainly and alike, each woman – played by a hugely gifted cast – delivers a sharply articulate and impassioned argument.
