SUMMARY:Chiaroscuro: Exhibition by Kim Whitby
DESCRIPTION:Exhibition open 2 November – 16 December 2024 (closed Sundays) \nChiaroscuro (literally light-dark in Italian) is an exhibition of works on paper by Malvern artist Kim Whitby. \nTraditional works on paper such as watercolour\, or as in this exhibition in ink\, rely on the paper itself being the lightest aspect of the picture. The artist has to leave any light areas as untouched paper and show any brightness by painting in the other tones and all the dark areas. To quote Kim\, “In order to show the light I paint the dark.” \nThe exhibition runs until 16 December 2024 at Malvern Library in the Cafe Gallery during core opening hours. Artwork on display can be purchased through the library. \nKim\, who is also a qualified and experienced art teacher\, will be offering two free workshops in the library which will be open to the public or any library members. The first workshop is in the Library on 19 November\, 2.30pm – 4pm.

DESCRIPTION:Visit Tenbury Wells this Christmas to see the amazing work of Hanah-Beth Bailey from Painted Fern Studio around the town whilst you shop. \nThe Tenbury Christmas Art Trail will run from 7 December 2024 until the New Year\, but there will still be much to see before then as the artworks take shape. Whilst some will not remain once the trail is over\, others will be kept on a more permanent basis for residents and visitors to enjoy. \nAt the time of writing\, Hanah-Beth has completed about 50 murals within a 5-mile radius of Tenbury Wells as well as schools and murals further afield such as Anchors Away soft play in Cleobury Mortimer and Exotic Zoo in Telford. Now setting up a first studio/shop in Tenbury\, The Painted Fern Studio\, Hanah-Beth will be teaching nature-based art workshops\, selling handmade art materials and homeware as well as teaching classes and making a creative hub within the town to support those using art and craft to build their own skills and businesses or to help maintain their mental health. \nSee the full list of artwork locations here

Would you like to meet him? \nThe Firs will be full of Christmas atmosphere with sparkly lights and Christmas trees throughout\, ready for you to be greeted by one of the elves who tell you all about your visit\, which will include: \n• Visiting Father Christmas in the idyllic cottage where you can tell him what’s on your Christmas list this year and he’ll have a present for you too.\n• Helping sort out Father Christmas’s letters and parcels in the sorting office ready to be delivered in time for Christmas.\n• Writing a letter to Father Christmas at the letter-writing station before placing it in the speedy delivery post box.\n• A stop at the craft workshop\, where you can create a Christmas decoration to take home.\n• Helping Father Christmas find his lost reindeer in the gardens.\n• The chance to take a seat and create a memory in Father Christmas’s sleigh. \nLittle Al’s Café will also be getting into the festive spirit and will be open from 10am – 4.30pm for hot drinks\, light lunches and seasonal treats. \nTickets are £15 per child with up to two accompanying adults. SUMMARY:Malvern Hills Cultural Walk
DESCRIPTION:Legendary fantasy authors JRR Tolkien and CS Lewis were frequent visitors to Malvern and the Malvern Hills and the distinctive landscape is thought to have inspired many features of Middle Earth and Narnia\, including the Giant’s Cave from The Hobbit and the Victorian gas lamps from The Lion\, the Witch & the Wardrobe. \nYou’ll choose between two routes\, the Tolkien Trail & the Lewis Loop\, both of which are outlined below. \nThe Tolkien Trail follows the main ridge south from the Wyche Cutting\, over several summits to the Giant’s Cave\, which is said to have inspired Tolkien’s first book\, The Hobbit. The trail then returns north\, with optional stops at the Malvern Hills Hotel and/or the Kettle Sings Cafe before ending where it began. \nThe Lewis Loop begins in Priory Park in Great Malvern and heads past Malvern College and Cherbourg House\, where Lewis went to school\, before pausing at the Lewis Memorial in Rosebank Gardens. Next it follows Narnia’s gas lamps up Happy Valley past St. Ann’s Well Cafe to the summit of North Hill before dropping down to Alexandra Road in Malvern Link\, where Lewis’s biographer\, George Sayer\, and composer Sir Edward Elgar lived. After passing Lewis and Tolkien’s favourite pub\, The Unicorn Inn on Belle Vue Terrace\, the loop ends at Great Malvern Priory\, home to what’s believed to be the original gas lamp. \nWhichever walk you choose\, you’ll hear tales of literary legends whilst savouring the most stunning views in the West Midlands. \nDates and booking\nThe walks are available on many dates\, often with the option of two start times on the same day. SUMMARY:Malvern Hills Cultural Walk
DESCRIPTION:Legendary fantasy authors JRR Tolkien and CS Lewis were frequent visitors to Malvern and the Malvern Hills and the distinctive landscape is thought to have inspired many features of Middle Earth and Narnia\, including the Giant’s Cave from The Hobbit and the Victorian gas lamps from The Lion\, the Witch & the Wardrobe. \nYou’ll choose between two routes\, the Tolkien Trail & the Lewis Loop\, both of which are outlined below. \nThe Tolkien Trail follows the main ridge south from the Wyche Cutting\, over several summits to the Giant’s Cave\, which is said to have inspired Tolkien’s first book\, The Hobbit. The trail then returns north\, with optional stops at the Malvern Hills Hotel and/or the Kettle Sings Cafe before ending where it began. \nThe Lewis Loop begins in Priory Park in Great Malvern and heads past Malvern College and Cherbourg House\, where Lewis went to school\, before pausing at the Lewis Memorial in Rosebank Gardens. Next it follows Narnia’s gas lamps up Happy Valley past St. Ann’s Well Cafe to the summit of North Hill before dropping down to Alexandra Road in Malvern Link\, where Lewis’s biographer\, George Sayer\, and composer Sir Edward Elgar lived. After passing Lewis and Tolkien’s favourite pub\, The Unicorn Inn on Belle Vue Terrace\, the loop ends at Great Malvern Priory\, home to what’s believed to be the original gas lamp. \nWhichever walk you choose\, you’ll hear tales of literary legends whilst savouring the most stunning views in the West Midlands. \nDates and booking\nThe walks are available on many dates\, often with the option of two start times on the same day. DESCRIPTION:Roving Crows are an Irish folk-rock band based in Herefordshire & Worcestershire. The Crows are a must-see live act\, with their mix of fiery fiddle-playing and conscious lyrics alongside driving drums and bass. The band was formed 15 years ago\, with the current line-up having played together since 2019. The group has toured tirelessly across the UK\, as well as in Australia\, France and the Netherlands. \nTheir passion and energy on stage is infectious\, never failing to deliver a great time with their vibrant live show! SUMMARY:The Samples & The Tights - Double Header Punk Show
DESCRIPTION:Originally formed in 1978\, and influenced by the first wave of UK punk bands\, The Samples gigged up and down the country between 1979 and 1986\, playing with bands including The Fall\, Blitz\, Vice Squad\, Discharge and many of the UK82 punk bands. \nEven though the band’s ‘last’ gig was in 1986\, they never officially split up! Wind forward to late 2019 – The Samples announce that their long hiatus is finally over; the ‘project’ was back on….but no-one had planned for a worldwide pandemic! The band suffered a major setback in 2021 when singer Sean ‘Badger’ Taylor sadly passed away. Paz and Dave\, the remaining members of the original band\, with Sean’s blessing\, decided to carry on with Paz taking on vocal duties. Now a three-piece\, The Samples have returned to regular gigging\, including an appearance at Rebellion in 2022 (they are returning in 2024)\, a return to The 100 Club in London supporting old label mates Peter and The Test Tube Babies and Red Alert\, and their very first gig outside of the UK in Paris. \nThe Tights played several gigs in London during the late ’70s\, including Dingwalls and The Marquee Club (at its original location on Wardour Street). During this period the band planned to move to London but split-up soon after they arrived. However\, they kept in touch and continued collaborating on several unrelated projects. \nNearly 30 years later\, in 2004\, The Tights played a reunion gig at Drummonds in Worcester. Following this the band felt there was unfinished business as far as gigging and recording went. \nTV\, Work & Bed was recorded and engineered by Garry Low at Glow Studios in Malvern 2006\, and mixed by Simon Duckworth at Simon Says Studios\, London. Two of the tracks\, No Life and I Can’t Sing (about what you are) were written back in 1977 but were not released at the time. \nDon’t miss this chance to hear two punk bands at the OCC\, Malvern. \nTickets: £10
