SUMMARY:Exhibition: Kim Whitby - Chiaroscuro
DESCRIPTION:Malvern-based artist Kim Whitby’s solo exhibition at Malvern Theatres\, ‘Chiaroscuro’\, runs from 6 January to 10 February 2025. \nKim writes: “I am interested in where drawing stops and painting starts. Inspired by a visual interest in structures\, my work in Indian drawing ink on unbleached British paper evolves to explore tone\, pattern and texture\, in varied mark-making techniques. I prefer working with spontaneity en plein air in places of historic\, geographical or unique character.” \nThe exhibition is being held in the Circle Bar. The exhibition should be accessible whenever the theatre is open\, but it’s advisable to ring 01684 892277 to check opening times if making a special journey.

SUMMARY:Exhibition: Snowfall on Resting Hill by Ray Jacobs
DESCRIPTION:Exhibition open Monday – Saturday until 30 January 2025 (closed Sunday) \n“Snowfall on Resting Hill”\, a new exhibition of stunningly beautiful woodland photography\, is open to all at Malvern Library (adjacent to Book and Cup Café\, lower ground floor) until 30 January 2025. The exhibition consists of ten selected images captured within the sessile oak woodland on Resting Hill\, Snailbeach\, photographed by Shropshire-based movement and film artist Ray Jacobs. \nRay states: “For me\, photography is all about the experience of walking through the landscape and encountering beauty in all its forms. The combination of soundscape\, landscape\, light\, the changes of both outdoor weather and my own emotional weather\, create moments to capture and translate into photographic image. On this day\, I was entranced by the beauty of the sessile oaks highlighted by the blanket of snow. \n“In the journey to the woods\, I encountered a myriad of animal paths\, snowdrifts\, sometimes up to my waist\, the silence of snow\, and the ever-refreshing cold against my face. I walked in many\, many circles; there were far too many exquisite forms and dances of these oaks to capture. I fell down on the aptly named Resting Hill… a lot\, and stayed until the numbness in my toes and fingers signalled it was time for home.” \nN.B. The exhibition is available to all visitors during core staffed hours; during “Libraries Unlocked” opening times\, it’s available only to those who have registered for this upgrade to their membership. For library opening hours\, visit the Worcestershire County Council website.

SUMMARY:Malvern Hills Cultural Walk
DESCRIPTION:Legendary fantasy authors JRR Tolkien and CS Lewis were frequent visitors to Malvern and the Malvern Hills and the distinctive landscape is thought to have inspired many features of Middle Earth and Narnia\, including the Giant’s Cave from The Hobbit and the Victorian gas lamps from The Lion\, the Witch & the Wardrobe. \nYou’ll choose between two routes\, the Tolkien Trail & the Lewis Loop\, both of which are outlined below. \nThe Tolkien Trail follows the main ridge south from the Wyche Cutting\, over several summits to the Giant’s Cave\, which is said to have inspired Tolkien’s first book\, The Hobbit. The trail then returns north\, with optional stops at the Malvern Hills Hotel and/or the Kettle Sings Cafe before ending where it began. \nThe Lewis Loop begins in Priory Park in Great Malvern and heads past Malvern College and Cherbourg House\, where Lewis went to school\, before pausing at the Lewis Memorial in Rosebank Gardens. Next it follows Narnia’s gas lamps up Happy Valley past St. Ann’s Well Cafe to the summit of North Hill before dropping down to Alexandra Road in Malvern Link\, where Lewis’s biographer\, George Sayer\, and composer Sir Edward Elgar lived. After passing Lewis and Tolkien’s favourite pub\, The Unicorn Inn on Belle Vue Terrace\, the loop ends at Great Malvern Priory\, home to what’s believed to be the original gas lamp. \nWhichever walk you choose\, you’ll hear tales of literary legends whilst savouring the most stunning views in the West Midlands. \nDates and booking\nThe walks are available on many dates\, often with the option of two start times on the same day. For more information\, including prices\, availability and to book. visit the Malvern Hills Cultural Walks page on Airbnb.
