SUMMARY:From Storytelling to Art – Exhibition by Graham Langley
DESCRIPTION:From Storytelling to Art – Exhibition by Graham Langley\nOpen 2 – 28 July 2025 during library opening hours (closed Sundays) \nMost of his life Graham has been involved in the performance arts. For 30 years he has travelled Britain and the world as a storyteller. But it is only in the last ten years that he has made something that he calls art\, mainly printmaking\, more recently acrylic\, and largely experimental. Much of his work reflects the British landscape\, especially prehistoric sites which he seeks out on his travels. \nThe exhibition will present a wide range of Graham Langley’s artwork. While much of the work will include colourful monoprints; these often combine the use of acrylic and collage. Work will include the all-black “Uffington White Horse at Night” and the all-white embossed image of the Nebra Sky Disc. \nAbout the artist\nFor twenty years Graham was a drama and dance teacher before an illness caused him to leave teaching. He turned back to his love of folksong and folklore. He started touring schools and libraries with his work and receiving invitations from abroad\, most notably tours in Australia\, New Zealand and Canada as well as Europe and Scandinavia. With Dream On Productions in Argentina he helped initiate English language storytelling in schools throughout South America. \nAs Artistic Director of the Trad Arts Team he established a touring network of popular storytelling evenings called Storytelling Café\, and nurtured young storytellers nationally\, running the annual Young Storyteller of the Year Award for ten years. Much of his recent artwork has narrative elements to them. \nAdmission is free.

DESCRIPTION:Legendary fantasy authors JRR Tolkien and CS Lewis were frequent visitors to the Malvern Hills around the middle of the 20th century and the distinctive landscape may have inspired features of Middle Earth and Narnia\, like the Giant’s Cave from the Hobbit and the Victorian gas lamps from The Lion\, the Witch & the Wardrobe. \nA century earlier\, authors Charles Darwin and Charles Dickens visited Malvern for the Water Cure and most of the treatment centres and guest houses still remain. \nThe Malvern Hills Literary Loop starts at the Mr. Tumnus bench in Priory Park and heads up past Knotsford House where Dickens stayed to Lewis’s former school Cherbourg House before pausing at the Lewis Memorial in Rosebank Gardens and following the gas lamps up to St. Ann’s Well cafe. \nAfter admiring the views around North Hill\, the trail descends to Alexandra Rd where Lewis’s close friend & biographer George Sayers lived\, opposite the former home of composer Edward Elgar. \nThe loop then heads up past Montreal House where Darwin stayed during his daughter’s treatment and past Lewis & Tolkien’s favourite pub The Unicorn Inn before passing the Hobbit door and down to Malvern Priory to find Anne Darwin’s grave and potentially the original Narnian gas lamp. \nDates and booking\nThe walks are available on many dates\, often with the option of two start times on the same day. For more information\, including prices\, availability and to book. visit the Malvern Hills Literary Loop: Tolkien\, Lewis\, Darwin & Dickens page on Airbnb.
