SUMMARY:Art Exhibition: The Cut by Shaun Morris (check opening times before travelling)
DESCRIPTION:This October\, Birmingham-based painter Shaun Morris presents ‘The Cut’\, an exhibition of a selection of his paintings of Birmingham and his native Black Country’s canals completed over the last 12 years. The region is well-known for its extensive canal network\, and these paintings bring them to life in unusual and imaginative ways which lean into the traditions of landscape painting with a variety of contemporary approaches. The large paintings\, rich in colour and atmosphere\, evoke a sense of the history of the canals and their role in the industrial revolution\, but also depict the canals as they cut through the ruins of the contemporary post-industrial landscape\, the so-called edgelands and the ‘geography of nowhere’. Here they hide and divide a landscape unseen beneath the colossal motorways of the M5 and M6 overhead that have replaced their use. In other paintings the canals are depicted at night in bold\, almost entirely abstract canvasses that exude a unique air of dislocation and mystery. All welcome. \nExhibition opening times\nMonday\, Tuesday\, Friday: 9am – 5pm\nWednesday: 1pm – 5pm\nThursday: 9am – 1pm\nSaturday: 10am – 3pm

SUMMARY:Malvern Hills Literary Loop: Tolkien\, Lewis\, Darwin & Dickens
DESCRIPTION:Legendary fantasy authors JRR Tolkien and CS Lewis were frequent visitors to the Malvern Hills around the middle of the 20th century and the distinctive landscape may have inspired features of Middle Earth and Narnia\, like the Giant’s Cave from the Hobbit and the Victorian gas lamps from The Lion\, the Witch & the Wardrobe. \nA century earlier\, authors Charles Darwin and Charles Dickens visited Malvern for the Water Cure and most of the treatment centres and guest houses still remain. \nThe Malvern Hills Literary Loop starts at the Mr. Tumnus bench in Priory Park and heads up past Knotsford House where Dickens stayed to Lewis’s former school Cherbourg House before pausing at the Lewis Memorial in Rosebank Gardens and following the gas lamps up to St. Ann’s Well cafe. \nAfter admiring the views around North Hill\, the trail descends to Alexandra Rd where Lewis’s close friend & biographer George Sayers lived\, opposite the former home of composer Edward Elgar. \nThe loop then heads up past Montreal House where Darwin stayed during his daughter’s treatment and past Lewis & Tolkien’s favourite pub The Unicorn Inn before passing the Hobbit door and down to Malvern Priory to find Anne Darwin’s grave and potentially the original Narnian gas lamp. \nDates and booking\nThe walks are available on many dates\, often with the option of two start times on the same day. For more information\, including prices\, availability and to book. visit the Malvern Hills Literary Loop: Tolkien\, Lewis\, Darwin & Dickens page on Airbnb.

SUMMARY:Jane Austen’s Emma
DESCRIPTION:“I am going to take a heroine whom no one but myself will much like” \nMarking the 250th anniversary of Jane Austen’s birth\, Theatre Royal Bath productions presents this new stage adaptation of her famous comedy of manners\, Emma. \nThe beautiful and high-spirited Emma Woodhouse is determined that she will never marry but enjoys meddling in her friends’ and neighbours’ relationships. When her confidante and former governess\, Miss Taylor\, marries Mr Weston\, Emma\, having introduced the pair\, takes credit for the success and decides that a future in matchmaking lies before her. \nThus begins a comic journey through the lives and loves of the eponymous character’s friends and neighbours\, depicting the burgeoning Regency social scene of Bath and Weymouth. But as the romantic web she weaves amongst her friends becomes ever more entangled\, will Emma herself get swept up in true love’s wake…? \nShow times\nMonday 13 October 2025\, 7.30pm\nTuesday 14 October 2025\, 7.30pm\nWednesday 15 October 2025\, 2.30pm\nWednesday 15 October 2025\, 7.30pm\nThursday 16 October 2025\, 7.30pm\nFriday 17 October 2025\, 7.30pm\nSaturday 18 October 2025\, 2.30pm\nSaturday 18 October 2025\, 7.30pm
