SUMMARY:Malvern Hills Literary Loop: Tolkien\, Lewis\, Darwin and Dickens
DESCRIPTION:Legendary fantasy authors JRR Tolkien and CS Lewis were frequent visitors to the Malvern Hills around the middle of the 20th century and the distinctive landscape may have inspired features of Middle Earth and Narnia\, like the Giant’s Cave from The Hobbit and the Victorian gas lamps from The Lion\, the Witch & the Wardrobe. \nA century earlier\, authors Charles Darwin and Charles Dickens visited Malvern for the Water Cure and most of the treatment centres and guest houses still remain. \nThe Malvern Hills Literary Loop starts at the Mr. Tumnus bench in Priory Park and heads up past Knotsford House where Dickens stayed to Lewis’s former school Cherbourg House before pausing at the Lewis Memorial in Rosebank Gardens and following the gas lamps up to St. Ann’s Well cafe. \nAfter admiring the views around North Hill\, the trail descends to Alexandra Rd where Lewis’s close friend & biographer George Sayer lived\, opposite the former home of composer Edward Elgar. \nThe loop then heads up past Montreal House where Darwin stayed during his daughter’s treatment and past Lewis & Tolkien’s favourite pub The Unicorn Inn before passing the Hobbit door and down to Malvern Priory to find Anne Darwin’s grave and potentially the original Narnian gas lamp. \nDates and booking\nThe walks are available on many dates\, often with the option of two start times on the same day. SUMMARY:Lived Experiences of Malvern (Heritage Open Days)
DESCRIPTION:As part of a living histories project\, local people have produced an artistic representation of what it means to them to be living in the Malvern area. This will be a visual record of the living history of Guarlford and the surrounding district. \nThis project invited local residents with no previous artistic experience to learn different techniques to communicate their own individual thoughts and feelings about the local environment. In just 12 weeks\, under tuition\, the budding artists have created a varied display of art which will be on view in the lovely old Guarlford Village Hall. This building has been recently renovated and now has a wonderful light and airy room\, perfect for both creating and viewing works of art. Guides will be on hand to welcome visitors and answer any questions about this interesting old building which dates back to 1870 and was formerly used as a malt house. \nThe cafe will be open alongside the display serving a range of homemade cakes and drinks. \nFor full details\, visit the Heritage Open Days website. \nTimings\nSunday 20 September 2026: 2pm – 5pm

Lieder\, chansons and part songs – imbued with musical richness – became vehicles for the deepest expressions of human feeling\, desire and fantasy. This programme pays tribute to many of the greatest European composers of Romantic vocal music from that age: extraordinary storytellers who include Sir Edward Elgar and Vaughan Williams in England\, Hugo Alfvén in Sweden\, Fanny and Felix Mendelssohn in Germany\, Schubert in Austria\, and Debussy\, Ravel and Saint-Saëns in France. The King’s Singers honour their collective imagination and brave emotional vulnerability by creating a magical journey that explores some of their most compelling thoughts on life\, love\, nature\, death\, and even the supernatural. \nTickets\nIndividual concert tickets can be purchased via the Malvern Theatres website; season-long memberships are also available \nPhoto © Benjamin Ealovega
