SUMMARY:Malvern Concert Club: The Nash Ensemble
DESCRIPTION:Chamber Ensemble in Residence at Wigmore Hall\, the Nash Ensemble has been presenting an annual themed series there since 1979. The ensemble’s 2023–24 season at Wigmore Hall was entitled ‘Songs from my Homeland – Music from the Czech Lands with works by Brahms’\, and the annual Nash Inventions concert on 26 March this year was a celebration and remembrance of the life and music of Sir Harrison Birtwistle. There was also a concert dedicated to the artists and to the music performed in the Theresienstadt Concentration Camp 1941–1945. Tragically\, many of these wonderful artists were murdered at Auschwitz. \nDuring the 2024-25 season at Wigmore Hall\, the Nash marks its sixtieth anniversary with a range of programmes illustrating the variety of music performed by the Ensemble over the years\, from Mozart to the avant garde. SUMMARY:Olivier Messiaen's 'Quartet for the End of Time' & a New Work by Harold Noben
DESCRIPTION:Hellens extends a warm welcome to one of Belgium’s finest chamber groups\, the Roeland Hendrikx Ensemble\, for a candle-lit concert in the atmospheric Great Barn. \nQuartet for the End of Time is a deeply moving work and becomes all the more so when one considers the history of its composition. It was composed in 1941 when Messiaen was interned in a prisoner-of-war camp (having been captured the previous year by the Germans) and it was performed in the camp to around 400 fellow prisoners. The line-up of clarinet\, violin\, cello and piano was determined by the availability of players and instruments. The musical and spiritual programme of this brilliant work reaches beyond the limits of human time. Messiaen was a deeply religious man\, and his inspiration for writing it was a passage from the book of Revelation in the Bible. He sought to break with the conventions of musical time which characterised the music of his predecessors. In Quartet for the End of Time\, irregular pulse and asymmetrical rhythm are vital elements the composer employs to convey his utopian vision. \nThe concert will also include a new work by the Belgian composer Harold Noben\, which was commissioned by the Roeland Hendrikx Ensemble to be played alongside Messiaen’s unique composition. \nTickets: £18 for adults (students free) – available to book online or by phone from Hellens (01531 660504) or The Courtyard\, Hereford (01432 340555) (please note that the concert takes place only at Hellens).

The Official UK No. 1 Tribute show\, as voted by The Agents Association of Great Britain for three successive years\, arrives direct From London’s Leicester Square Theatre\, The 02 and a Royal Command Performance. \nThe acclaimed David Alacey (Lovejoy & Inspector Alleyn) stars as Frank Sinatra\, alongside Paul Drakeley (Inside Out – BBC) as Dean Martin. They are joined by former Eastenders star and ITV’s (Central News) “Mr Weather” – Des Coleman as Sammy Davis Jnr in the original Rat Pack show\, now celebrating its 25th record breaking year. Together they amaze audiences with their recreation of a magical Christmas at The Sands with Sinatra\, Martin and Davis in this sensational show which brings the style\, glamour and excitement of the Las Vegas heyday to vivid life. Including all the great hits – My Way\, Mr Bojangles\, New York New York\, Amore\, Fly Me To The Moon and Christmas classics such as Winter Wonderland\, Let It Snow and\, of course\, White Christmas. \nJust as Frank\, Dean and Sammy were joined on stage at The Sands by surprise special guests\, that element of theatrical magic is recreated in this show with appearances by the likes of Marilyn Monroe\, Nancy Sinatra and Liza Minnelli adding even more glamour to this stylish production. \nThis yuletide treat for all the family also features the fabulous Buddy Greco All-stars under the direction of BBC Musical Director Mac Shone at the piano – Christmas memories really are made of this!

DESCRIPTION:Polish violinist Maria Włoszczowska is recognised for her versatile musicianship\, performing as soloist\, director/concertmaster\, and chamber musician. Recent career highlights include her BBC Proms solo debut with the Royal Northern Sinfonia and Dinis Sousa\, her New York recital debut at 92NY with Jeremy Denk and directing the Chamber Orchestra of Europe at Mozartwoche Salzburg. As Leader of the Royal Northern Sinfonia\, Maria also regularly directs the orchestra in repertoire such as Beethoven’s Violin Concerto and Mozart’s Sinfonia Concertante. \nScottish pianist Alasdair Beatson is renowned as a sincere musician and intrepid programmer. He champions a wide repertoire on both modern and historical instruments\, with particular areas of interest including classical\, early romantic and French music (especially Fauré) alongside the music of today’s composers.
