SUMMARY:Graham Hughes’ Sunshine Kings (Upton Jazz Festival)
DESCRIPTION:Entry by wristband \nThe Sunshine Kings are led by Graham Hughes on the trombone and vocals (with the odd feature on chromatic harmonica by request!). Graham works with many of the most respected jazz musicians in the UK and often appears as a featured guest at festivals. He formed The Sunshine Kings for an appearance at a jazz club in London in 2009\, choosing a group of musicians from around London who were at the time little known on the traditional jazz scene. Graham has transcribed versions of interesting songs played by bands of the 1920s and 30s\, written his own arrangements of popular numbers\, and even composed one or two original numbers of his own for the band. Variety is the spice of life\, and The Sunshine Kings takes this mantra on board with their performances\, filling the music with freshness and fun.

SUMMARY:Hotsy Totsy (Upton Jazz Festival)
DESCRIPTION:Free entry \nThe present 5-piece line-up came from an all-female band who played the Purcell Rooms in London. They play an impressive variety of styles\, from 1930s swing to 1940s cool\, with an occasional glance back to the 1920s\, making over old standards with fresh arrangements\, playing with panache and an obvious infectious enjoyment. Always something going on with 12 instruments between them\, this band\, led by Zoe Lambert (reeds\, vocals) and Debbie Arthurs (reeds\, drums\, vocals)\, with Rachel Hayward (banjo\, guitar\, vibes\, vocals)\, Jude Whitlock (bass) and Anna Menter (piano) generates plenty of energy and enthusiasm\, and is well received at events throughout the country.

SUMMARY:Armonico Consort: Rachmaninov Vespers by Candlelight
DESCRIPTION:Candlelit choral concert brings chance to unwind and reflect: Rachmaninov’s Vespers by Candlelight \nThe renowned choral group Armonico Consort is to give a summer evening candlelit performance of Rachmaninov’s glorious Vespers at Malvern Theatres on 8 July 2025. \nRachmaninov’s great choral achievement provides a chance to experience an hour of contemplation and mindfulness in an evocative candlelit setting. \nWritten in 1915\, while Rachmaninov was on a concert tour of Russia to support the war effort\, this is music that brought consolation as well as a yearning for peace in the depths of war. It was hugely popular from the outset and Rachmaninov said\, ‘Even in my wildest dreams I could not have imagined that I could write such a work.’ He hoped its fifth movement would be played at his funeral. \nThe rich and sonorous tones of the Vespers are steeped in the long tradition of the Russian Orthodox Church and Rachmaninov found a way of turning the unaccompanied voices into an orchestra\, with singers frequently dividing into multiple parts. \nLed by founder-director Christopher Monks\, Armonico Consort is one of today’s leading vocal groups\, especially known for its innovative concerts of choral masterpieces\, and its critically-acclaimed performances and recordings. \nChristopher Monks says\, ‘Rachmaninov Vespers is simply the most gorgeous choral music ever to have been written\, and for a moment in time\, simply nothing else will matter.’ \n

SUMMARY:The Bowie Band
DESCRIPTION:The Bowie Band performs favourite songs from the decades of one of the greatest British musicians of all time\, David Bowie\, celebrating his legacy and live experience. \nIn 2005\, David Bowie’s ‘Reality’ tour was curtailed because of his heart attack\, and this live experience continues where he left off. The Bowie Band\, which includes incredible musicians from The Album Project\, UK Pink Floyd Experience and Johnny Clash\, is fronted by Leo Live\, who spent his childhood in the same area of the UK as Bowie himself. \nThey have researched David Bowie’s live material\, diligently and affectionately curating live sets from the hits and live favourites of all his best performances. Plus\, there are always costume ch-ch-ch-ch-changes in their performances\, and concert-goers are encouraged to participate in the celebration by dressing up/’glamming up’ for the shows! \nFeaturing an outstanding eight-piece band performing Bowie’s hits and live favourites across his classic albums: Space Oddity\, Ziggy Stardust\, Aladdin Sane\, Hunky Dory\, Diamond Dogs\, The Man Who Sold The World\, Heroes\, Station To Station\, Let’s Dance\, and more… \nTickets available online in advance (two-ticket early bird deal available until end of May) or cash on the door. \nFully stocked bar available.
