DESCRIPTION:Free entry \nThere will be Music at the Museum all afternoon\, in the beautiful garden and inside if necessary. Tea\, coffee and cake\, too. \n1pm – 1.45pm: The Foregate Brothers\nAndy and David are a quirky and irreverent guitar/vocals duo\, playing the lighter side of jazz from the 20s to the 50s\, with a smattering of humorous originals and the occasional blues thrown in for good measure. Working on the philosophy of ‘what’s the worst that could happen’ means that literally anything could! \n2pm – 2.45pm: Fishmongers Friends\nKicked off our 7th Upton Jazz Fringe. The Friends are a Herefordshire based\, mixed shanty group who sing to raise money for St Michaels Hospice so please give generously. \n3pm – 3.45pm: Len Cole Saxtet\nThe Len Cole Saxtet was formed and inspired by the late Len Cole from Earls Croome. Six saxophones – Karen\, Angie\, Angela\, May\, Dave and Jon – will play familiar upbeat numbers ranging from the Beatles\, St Louis Blues and Birdland and ending with a rock ’n roll finale. \n4pm – 5.15pm: Worcester Ukulele Band\nThe band has played gigs around Worcester and beyond for many years. We entertain audiences with lively renditions of songs from the early 20th century to the present day… we take on all challenges\, we encourage audience participation and hope you leave with a smile and feeling uplifted. We raise around £20\,000 a year!! Our charity for this year is MAGGS\, giving hope to the homeless.

DESCRIPTION:The Swan Hotel hosts the Upton Jazz Fringe on Saturday and Sunday. \nProgramme for Saturday 28 June\n12pm – 12.45pm: Fishmongers Friends\nLocal band kicks off our 7th Upton Jazz Fringe. The Friends are a Herefordshire based\, mixed shanty  group who sing to raise money for St Michael’s Hospice so please give generously. Anything goes at the Fringe! \n1pm – 1.30pm: Max Dmytruk\nMaksym and his family were welcomed in Upton under the Homes for Ukraine Scheme. Max is a professional musician (saxes\, clarinet and flute) of over 20 years standing. He once played with the great Bob Wilber who also played Upton. We’re delighted to have Max back at Upton Jazz. If you admire Strayhorn and Desmond then you’ll love Max! \n2.15pm – 3.30pm: A Touch of Jazz\nFringe regulars from Malvern\, and the house band for the very popular Malvern Jazz Jam (first Friday every month). A Touch of Jazz aptly describes what these experienced players offer. Great Jazz standards\, maybe a cool Bebop tune\, or a copacabana flavoured bossa. With Kate Hill on keyboard\, Steve Gallaghan on bass\, David Balen on drums and Roy Snook on saxes. \n4.15pm – 6.15pm: Shades on Black\nShades on Black are a 12 piece based around Stratford upon Avon playing vocals and instrumentals from the 20s on\, incorporating Latin through to more modern jazz interpretations. Expect a wide range from fast paced charts to slow emotive ballads\, with vocalist Angie\, and the band consisting of Geoff\, James\, Jon\, Marie and Rose on clarinets/ saxes\, Matt\, Harrison and Mike on trumpet/ trombones\, Tom on keys\, Callum on bass and Steve on cajon.  \n7pm – 8.30pm: Natural Right Band\nAnything goes at the Fringe…Natural Right are a Reggae/Ska band that have been  creating their own\, original\, music. They have a unique sound that fuses Reggae with indie and ska vibes. Like the Specials\, they offer some edgy social comment too. Their energetic performances are sure to get the crowd moving. They have recently supported Captain Accident\, Buster Shuffle\, The Kubricks\, The Skapones & The Undercover Hippy; and now they are welcome in Upton.  \n9pm – 10.30pm: Tunehead\nFunk\, soul and acid jazz is at the heart and soul of this 5 piece band. Tunehead play for you the music closest to their hearts – a funky\, jazzy and edgy blend of irresistibly danceable music – echoes of Stevie Wonder\, Sly and the Family Stone\, Steely Dan\, Herbie Hancock\, Miles Davis\, The Average White Band or Grover Washington\, conjuring up memories of good times. DESCRIPTION:Entry by wristband \nBen Holder is the most acclaimed and exciting jazz violinist in the UK. His classical studies began at the age of six and were complemented by training at the Birmingham Conservatoire. An introduction to jazz came in his early teens – classic masters such as Benny Goodman\, Oscar Peterson and Stephane Grappelli – and led Ben to truly find his place as a musician. Ben possesses an innate sense of swing rhythm (something which often eludes classical players)\, breath-taking technical ability and true showmanship on stage. He offers flawless musicianship\, heaps of energy and personality and a visible passion for his craft. Ben’s various awards bear testimony to these abilities. Often playing across the UK\, Europe and further afield\, he is a first-call jazz violinist for many of the country’s top venues\, line-ups and studios. Ben Holder’s Hot Club Quartet is an exciting line-up of talented musicians. Led by young jazz virtuoso Ben Holder on violin and vocals\, the quartet benefits from the slick guitar stylings of Dominic Ashworth\, with Paul Jefferies on bass and Nick Millward on drums. DESCRIPTION:Free entry \nMany of the songs Cate choose to put her stamp on belong to that great age of song sophistication\, coming from the pen of the masters of the ‘jazz age’. She does full justice to them\, their melodies caressing\, lyrics expressing\, reflecting on their subtleties and breathing new life into them. Cate is delighted to be accompanied by Dave Green (bass) and Dave Newton (piano). Growing up in Renfrewshire\, Scotland\, Newton had a musical upbringing with the piano trio sound of Peterson\, Tatum or Garner an ever-present feature in the Newton household. After graduating from Leeds College of Music in 1979 and working in the north of thecountry for a while\, he moved to London where he rapidly became a much sought after pianist teaming up with Alan Barnes\, guitarist Martin Taylor and saxophonist Don Weller. He has worked regularly with Carol Kidd\, Marion Montgomery\, Tina May\, Annie Ross\, Claire Martin and of course Stacey Kent. David Newton was voted best Jazz Pianist in the British Jazz awards for the thirteenth time in 2014 and was made a Fellow of Leeds College of Music in 2003.

SUMMARY:Rico’s Littlest Big Band  with Cia Tomasso (Upton Jazz Festival)
DESCRIPTION:Entry by wristband \nEnrico Tomasso is considered one of the top jazz trumpeters on the jazz scene and six times winner of best trumpet category in the British Jazz Awards. He playsthe top festivals and jazz clubs around the world\, having an exciting presence and dynamic personality on stage. His command of the instrument and broad stylistic ability place him in demand in the recording world. He met and was mentored by Louis Armstrong as a child and met and played with many more of the ‘Jazz Maestros’ on his journey. \nCia Tomasso steered her education towards music and jazz during secondary school and started sitting in with informal jazz sessions at 15. Her influence is from a really wide spectrum of listening which has resulted in a unique style\, singing with a joyful and relaxed feeling. Rico’s Littlest Big Band is a play on the description of The John Kirby Band of the late 30’s\, ‘The Biggest Little Band’. Rico has been playing these wonderful transcriptions for many years but now includes the vocal arrangements in the same engaging style as a showcase for Cia Tomasso’s wonderful interpretations. \nRobert Fowler and Trevor Whiting take on the clarinet and sax duties whilst the swinging rhythm section is Colin Good\, John Sutton and Jerome Davies.

Fine Folk Rock with energy and a great sense of fun. The Fringe is all about local talent\, diversity and pushing the boundaries beyond Jazz. We’ve had opera\, blues\, jazz funk and songs from the shows so why not electric folk?

DESCRIPTION:Free entry \nWYJO have performed at an impressive number of events and venues around the region including the Pershore and Upton jazz festivals\, Huntingdon Hall\, The Swan\, No.8 and Artrix theatres\, Caldwell Castle\, Himley Hall\, Symphony Hall Birmingham and big band weekends in Hayling Island and Weston-Super-Mare. WYJO has performed in concert with: Alan Barnes\, Bruce Adams\, Enrico Tomasso\, Georgina Jackson\, Trevor Emney\, Pete Long\, Mark Nightingale\, John Ruddick MBE\, Percy Pursglove and Julian Siegel. WYJO have recorded two CDs\, ‘The Horn Ultimatum’ and ‘The Horn Legacy’ and have also recorded the music for an episode of a Dutch children’s TV show ‘Dip & Dap’. They have toured abroad twice\, playing gigs in Holland\, Belgium and Germany. They are conductedby Ian Hattersley.

SUMMARY:Graham Hughes’ Sunshine Kings (Upton Jazz Festival)
DESCRIPTION:Entry by wristband \nThe Sunshine Kings are led by Graham Hughes on the trombone and vocals (with the odd feature on chromatic harmonica by request!). Graham works with many of the most respected jazz musicians in the UK and often appears as a featured guest at festivals. He formed The Sunshine Kings for an appearance at a jazz club in London in 2009\, choosing a group of musicians from around London who were at the time little known on the traditional jazz scene. Graham has transcribed versions of interesting songs played by bands of the 1920s and 30s\, written his own arrangements of popular numbers\, and even composed one or two original numbers of his own for the band. Variety is the spice of life\, and The Sunshine Kings takes this mantra on board with their performances\, filling the music with freshness and fun.
