Rooted in the bebop & swing traditions\, her powerful\, melodic playing draws inspiration from the likes of Phil Woods\, Sonny Stitt & Cannonball Adderley. Alex has performed with notable names such as Alan Barnes\, Bruce Adams & Mark Nightingale and regularly works with top ensembles including The Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Orchestra. Leading her own quartet featuring some of the UK’s finest musicians\, namely Dave Newton (piano)\, Dave Green (bass) and Steve Brown (drums)\, she released her latest album ‘Only A Year’ in 2022. For this afternoon’s performance\, Alex’s quartet will be exploring the music of Cole Porter\, performing innovative arrangements of his repertoire from the 1930s and 40s and featuring iconic songs from his most loved musicals such as Kiss Me Kate\, Jubilee & Anything Goes.

DESCRIPTION:Free entry \nFiddleBop plays Gypsy jazz in the band’s own highly distinctive style\, with a notable fondness for vocals\, both solo and harmonised. And — like the first Gypsy jazz bands — FiddleBop’s repertoire is eclectic. Expect Gypsy-flavoured jazz drawn from pretty much all of the genre’s century-long history: get-up-and-dance jazz from the 1920s\, 1930s chilli-hot swing\, cool post-bop\, jazz-flavoured classic pop\, folk-jazz\, and the band’s own creations. All played and sung with Gypsy zing and passion. Based in mid-Wales since 2017\, the current line-up of FiddleBop features Jo Davies on Spanish guitar and vocals. She’s the rhythmic foundation of FiddleBop. Dave Favis-Mortlock features on violin and vocals\, Paul Stevens is FiddleBop’s keyboard whiz: rhythmic\, blues-soaked\, and soulful and Graeme Lamble is FiddleBop’s fretless bassist extraordinaire.

The inclusion of Tom ‘Spats’ Langham’s guitar and vocals in this 30’s freewheeling swing setting just adds to the variety. Of course\, you also have Rico’s great trumpet and vocals and the wonderful Trevor Whiting on clarinet and sax and to complete the perfect stylistic rhythm\, Nick Ward and Malcolm Sked on drums and bass.

DESCRIPTION:Entry by wristband \nLeeds City Stompers originated in 2011 to play acoustic blues and early jazz and ragtime in the 1920s & 30s style. The band uses authentic instruments: a 1935 resonator guitar\, washboard\, drums and double bass to bring prohibition era music to life. They have played most major blues festivals and look forward to their first time in Upton. \nThe band comprise of Martyn Roper on guitar\, vocals\, kazoo and harmonica\, John Arnesen on drums\, washboard and vocals and Hugh Bradley on double bass and vocals.

WYJO have recorded two CDs\, ‘The Horn Ultimatum’ and ‘The Horn Legacy’ and have also recorded the music for an episode of a Dutch children’s TV show ‘Dip & Dap’. They have toured abroad twice\, playing gigs in Holland\, Belgium and Germany. They are conductedby Ian Hattersley.

DESCRIPTION:Entry by wristband \nThe Sunshine Kings are led by Graham Hughes on the trombone and vocals (with the odd feature on chromatic harmonica by request!). Graham works with many of the most respected jazz musicians in the UK and often appears as a featured guest at festivals. He formed The Sunshine Kings for an appearance at a jazz club in London in 2009\, choosing a group of musicians from around London who were at the time little known on the traditional jazz scene. Graham has transcribed versions of interesting songs played by bands of the 1920s and 30s\, written his own arrangements of popular numbers\, and even composed one or two original numbers of his own for the band. Variety is the spice of life\, and The Sunshine Kings takes this mantra on board with their performances\, filling the music with freshness and fun.

DESCRIPTION:Entry by wristband \nAlan Barnes is a prolific international performer\, composer\, arranger\, bandleader and touring soloist. He is best known for his work on clarinet\, alto and baritone sax\, where he combines a formidable virtuosity with a musical expression and collaborative spirit that have few peers. Alan Barnes’s unique musicianship\, indefatigable touring\, and warm rapport with audiences have made him uniquely popular in British jazz. A multiple award winner\, Bruce Adams has shared the stage with such luminaries as Dick Hymn\, Benny Carter\, Al Cohn\, Kenny Davern\, Bob Wilber\, Bill and John Allred\, Dave McKenna\, Buddy Tate and Ray Bryant to name but a few. Bruce has often worked as a special guest soloist with both the Scottish Radio Orchestra and the BBC Big Band. Craig Milverton is one of Britain’s finest Jazz Pianists and this was recognised in 2010 by winning Best Jazz Pianist in the British Jazz Awards. His trio is often used to back a host of top names at clubs and festivals across Europe. Artists include Stacey Kent\, Jacqui Dankworth and Scott Hamilton. He works regularly with Digby Fairweather and his Half Dozen and was accompanist to Blues Singer George Melly with whom he recorded 3 CDs one of which featured Van Morrison. He has toured and performed at top venues and festivals across the globe. His trio features the amazing virtuoso on bass Tom Clarke-Hill and Nick Millward\, one of the finest drummers in the UK.

DESCRIPTION:Back for 2025\, join Malvern Town Council for an 18-week programme running throughout the summer months (with the exception of 6 July) that will see bands from around Worcestershire coming to play in the Priory Park Bandstand. There is something for everyone\, with many genres covered over the season including brass band\, jazz\, pop\, folk\, blues and many more. \nAll concerts run from 2.30pm – 4.30pm (except 17 August 2025\, when there will be an earlier start with an additional band at 1pm) and are free to attend. \nBring a rug or folding chair to sit on if you wish. DESCRIPTION:Free entry \nJohn Hallam is an outstanding and accomplished musician who is equally at ease with many forms of music on a number of reed instruments. His playing has the ability to be innovative and thrilling as well as sensitively moving. As a freelance professional musician\, he has worked with many of the finest musicians from both sides of the Atlantic\, and his work has covered recordings for radio\, television\, jazz workshops and projects for education. \nSought after for his swinging piano style\, Tom Kincaid has become the first choice of many touring artists and bandleaders\, performing with jazz saxophonists Art Themen and Scott Hamilton\, as well as his childhood hero\, rock ‘n’ roll legend Shakin’ Stevens. His influences range from Errol Garner and Oscar Peterson to Professor Longhair and Dr. John. He currently tours with Elkie Brooks.

DESCRIPTION:Free entry \nPerforming at The Muggery from 12pm on Saturday and at Mojito’s from 3.30pm on Sunday \nBrian Chell is a regular performer in the Midlands and North West and features the music of guitar greats such as Kessel\, Montgomery\, and Joe Pass. Brian has played alongside many top British jazz greats. He was for many years the jazz guitar tutor at Keele University. Today he is joined by up and coming jazz singer Dominic Steele who is making a name for himself on the London jazz scene singing in the style of Sinatra\, Bennett and Nat King Cole.

Hot Banana have an exuberant and visual stage presence\, an infectious feel-good humour and dazzling musicianship which have helped Hot Banana to establish in a very short time\, the glowing reputation it enjoys whenever they perform.
