SUMMARY:War Paint – Women at War (12A) (Autumn in Malvern Festival)
DESCRIPTION:Margy Kinmonth’s feature documentary illuminates the trailblazing role of women war artists\, on the front lines around the world\, championing the female perspective on conflict through art and asking: when it’s life or death\, what do women see that men don’t? \nTraditionally a male domain\, war art by women has been for the most part unrecognised. Until now…

Culture breaks the taboo\, crosses borders – tells the truth to power. Artists featured include Dame Rachel Whiteread\, Zhanna Kadyrova\, Maggi Hambling\, Assil Diab\, Dame Laura Knight\, Marcelle Hanselaar\, Cornelia Parker\, Maya Lin\, Shirin Neshat and Lee Miller. An entirely female cast of contributors makes this film a unique undertaking – telling vital truths in turbulent times. \nCertificate: 12A\nRunning time: 1hr 29mins\nReleased: 2025 \nTickets\n£8.50 / £9.50 – available via the Malvern Theatres website

SUMMARY:Britten’s Endgame (Autumn in Malvern Festival)
DESCRIPTION:Britten’s Endgame – a film by John Bridcut \nWriter and film-maker John Bridcut presents a documentary released in 2013 to mark the centenary of the birth of composer Benjamin Britten which explores Britten’s creativity in the face of death. Those closest to him watched anxiously as he raced to complete his final opera Death in Venice\, tackling an edgy subject which resonated with his own life. Britten’s eventual heart operation after years of stress and illness left him incapacitated and prematurely old and frail\, yet somehow he rediscovered his creative urge to compose two late masterpieces. \nNine years after Bridcut made his award-winning Britten’s Children\, this is a rich and poignant film about the final years of a surprisingly insecure composer and the impact of what Britten’s partner Peter Pears called ‘an evil opera’. \nThe film features specially filmed performances of Britten’s music by Sarah Connolly (mezzo-soprano)\, John Graham-Hall and Allan Clayton (tenors)\, Xavier Phillips (cello)\, the BBC Concert Orchestra conducted by Paul Kildea\, Schola Cantorum of Oxford conducted by James Burton\, and the Fitzwilliam String Quartet. \nRunning time: 1hr 59mins\nRelease date: 2013 \nTickets\n£8.50/£9.50 – available to book via the Malvern Theatres website
