SUMMARY:Battle of Worcester 1651 (Malvern Walking Festival)
DESCRIPTION:River walk but one short sharp ascent at the end. The walk starts at Powick Bridge where the first battle of the Civil War (1642 – 1651) was fought. We then follow the River Teme along the Monarch’s Way & across the battlefields to join the River Severn. It was at this point that Oliver Cromwell built his ‘bridge of boats’ to cross the Severn and confront the Royalist army. We then continue into Worcester and pass the Commandery\, King Charles’ battle HQ\, and finally walk up to Fort Royal for an overview of the City and see where Charles fled after he was defeated. Our expert guide will make several stops to share his stories and the history of this final battle in the Civil War on 3rd September 1651. The time includes several information stops and lunchbreak. \nThe walk starts across fields\, which may be muddy depending on the spring weather\, and for the latter half of the walk is on roads in the City. There will be time for a coffee break and a lunch stop\, so bring sufficient rations. \n\n\n\nDistance:\n7 miles\n\n\nDuration:\n5 hours\n\n\nDifficulty:\nModerate\n\n\nDate:\n16 May\n\n\nStart time:\n10:30 am\n\n\nWalk leader:\nKeith Collins (Powick Ramblers)\n\n\nStart location:\nPowick Bridge\n2 Powick Mills\nOld Road\, Worcester\nWR2 4BU\n\n\nGrid reference:\nSO 835 524\n\n\nWhat3Words:\nCost.point.radio\n\n\nFurther details:\nMeet and park at Powick Bridge on Old Road (off the A449) by the Old Mill and close to the very tall chimney. SUMMARY:Tenbury Wells Circular (Malvern Walking Festival)
DESCRIPTION:A short but lovely circular walk that starts and ends from the town of Tenbury Wells’ free car park near the Burgage. This walk takes in the quiet Rhyse Lane (also a popular quiet cycle route) that will take you down the Teme Valley in parallel with the river and then it turns uphill through the Kyrewood and nearby fields. It then starts to descend through further open sheep fields and eventually it runs along a contour up above the local Kyre Brook through quiet fields. The final section runs aside arable fields and then into the back of the town where you swiftly reach your starting point back in the main car park. \nGiven the short length of the walk we should finish at approximately lunch time back in the town. There are lots of places to then either eat a packed lunch afterwards or you can pop into one of the town’s many pubs or cafes should you prefer too. \nSturdy footwear recommended. \n3 stiles and up and down of 500 feet. \n£6.00 \nDistance: 3.5 miles\nDuration: 2 hours\nDifficulty: Easy\nDate: 18 May\nStart time: 10:00 am\nWalk leader: Andy Stevenson (poin2guides.com)\nStart location: Palmer’s Meadow (Free) Car Park at the gate to the Rugby Pitch.\nPalmer’s Meadow Car Park\nTenbury Wells\nWR15 8SF\nGrid reference: SO 59841 68284\nWhat3Words: ///adjuster.proven.regulator\nFurther details:\nFree Parking at Palmer’s Meadow\, overflow (fee) parking over the Kyre Brook in the Burgage Car Park.

SUMMARY:Hills around West Malvern (Malvern Walking Festival)
DESCRIPTION:This is a wonderful\, undulating meander in West Malvern and Mathon\, crossing over ridges of Silurian limestone and valleys of Silurian Shale. We pass Hay Slad Spout\, one of the most powerful springs on the hills and an opportunity to fill our water bottles with the fantastic spring water of which Malvern is justifiably proud. 6 stiles and up down of 1\,440 feet. \nSome of the rocks seen near Mathon were formed some 400 million years ago. According to a local author ‘There can be no finer scenery than this\, anywhere in England\, and the village of Mathon emphasises this with its name which is thought to be derived from an Old English word for treasure or gift’. \nThere are several gentle hills to walk over but two very steep climbs on the return leg. \n\n£6.00 \n\n\n\nDistance:\n6 miles\n\n\nDuration:\n4 hours\n\n\nDifficulty:\nHard\n\n\nDate:\n18 May\n\n\nStart time:\n10:00 am\n\n\nWalk leader:\nPeter Reynolds (Ombersley Social Strollers)\n\n\nStart location:\nWest of England Quarry car park\nWest Malvern Road\nWR14 4DH\n\n\nGrid reference:\nSO 766448\n\n\nWhat3Words:\ngrocers.pardon.forklift\n\n\nFurther details:\nBring refreshments\, we will stop half-way for a few minutes to enjoy the incredible views on the top of Cockshot Hill and soak up the delightful atmosphere.

SUMMARY:Abberley Hill and Witley Court (Malvern Walking Festival)
DESCRIPTION:This scenic walk starts from Great Witley Village Hall. We have a steep ascent up Abberley Hill followed by splendid views as we walk north-eastwards along the ridge. We then descend and ascend eastwards to have a break at St Peter’s Church in Astley. We then head south past Glasshampton monastery which was converted from a stable for the Anglican Franciscan order in 1918. Heading further south we cross the A443 and walk past Witley Court\, with its lovely gardens\, once one of the great country houses of England and\, following a fire in 1937\, now one of England’s most spectacular ruins run by English Heritage. Next door is Witley Parish Church\, Britain’s finest baroque church\, and worth a small detour. We then return to Great Witley Village Hall. \nYou’ll need a packed lunch\, plenty to drink and suitable clothing and footwear for all weathers. \n\n£6.00 \n\n\n\nDistance:\n8 miles\n\n\nDuration:\n4.5 hours\n\n\nDifficulty:\nHard\n\n\nDate:\n18 May\n\n\nStart time:\n10:00 am\n\n\nWalk leader:\nDavid Mann (Wyre Forest Ramblers & Malvern Hills District Footpath Society)\n\n\nStart location:\nGreat Witley Village Hall\nWorcester Road\nGreat Witley\nWR6 6HP\n\n\nGrid reference:\nSO 758 658\n\n\nWhat3Words:\nhttps://w3w.co/tolerable.fragment.deeply\n\n\nFurther details:\nParking is free.

SUMMARY:Symonds Yat and Highmeadow Woods (Malvern Walking Festival)
DESCRIPTION:Symonds Yat Rock is one of the iconic features of the Forest of Dean\, a striking view point over a great crook of the River Wye and the starting point for this meandering circuit through a particularly beautiful corner of forest. Along the way it climbs steeply to two more stunning rocky eyries and incorporates a couple of other curiosities for good measure. Halfway around Staunton offers refreshments and also has an interesting church. \nGenerally good well-defined paths with the exception of one rough steep path up through woods which requires a bit of strenuous climbing. Good walking boots and walking poles are recommended. \nStunning cliff top view points across the Wye Valley and the distant horizon of the Black Mountains. Several interesting stones along the way and a boulder of conglomerate reputed to be the largest in Britain estimated to weigh as much as 14\,000 tonnes. \n\n£6.00 \nDistance: 9.5 miles\nDuration: 5 hours\nDifficulty: Hard\nDate: 18 May\nStart time: 10:00 am\nWalk leader: Shan South (Worcester U3A 10+ & Ramblers)\nStart location: Symonds Yat car park (pay and display) – outside the toilets\nHR9 6JL\nGrid reference: SO 564160\nWhat3Words: horses.rationed.gearbox\nFurther details:\nThe route terrain is woodland tracks and paths. There are steep steps down from the Yat Rock to the riverside and there is one section which is a steep climb up through woods with a poorly defined path and requires strenuous effort. There will be two breaks (coffee and lunch) and walkers must bring adequate food/refreshments for both breaks and a good drinking water supply.
