DESCRIPTION:Legendary fantasy authors JRR Tolkien and CS Lewis were frequent visitors to the Malvern Hills around the middle of the 20th century and the distinctive landscape may have inspired features of Middle Earth and Narnia\, like the Giant’s Cave from The Hobbit and the Victorian gas lamps from The Lion\, the Witch & the Wardrobe. \nA century earlier\, authors Charles Darwin and Charles Dickens visited Malvern for the Water Cure and most of the treatment centres and guest houses still remain. \nThe Malvern Hills Literary Loop starts at the Mr. Tumnus bench in Priory Park and heads up past Knotsford House where Dickens stayed to Lewis’s former school Cherbourg House before pausing at the Lewis Memorial in Rosebank Gardens and following the gas lamps up to St. Ann’s Well cafe. \nAfter admiring the views around North Hill\, the trail descends to Alexandra Rd where Lewis’s close friend & biographer George Sayer lived\, opposite the former home of composer Edward Elgar. \nThe loop then heads up past Montreal House where Darwin stayed during his daughter’s treatment and past Lewis & Tolkien’s favourite pub The Unicorn Inn before passing the Hobbit door and down to Malvern Priory to find Anne Darwin’s grave and potentially the original Narnian gas lamp. \nDates and booking\nThe walks are available on many dates\, often with the option of two start times on the same day. SUMMARY:Guided Tour of Great Malvern Station (Heritage Open Days)
DESCRIPTION:Great Malvern is fortunate to have one of the best preserved stations in the country; it has recently benefited from a major refurbishment. \nGreat Malvern station was opened by the Worcester and Hereford Railway in 1860 and the present buildings\, by architect Edmund Wallace Elmslie\, were completed in 1862. The Midland Railway and the London and North Western Railway collaborated on the construction cost; the solicitor\, Samuel Carter\, was also solicitor to both of these major companies. It was later absorbed by the Great Western Railway. \nLocal landowner Lady Emily Foley was a key sponsor of the building of the station. She had a waiting room made for her exclusive use at Great Malvern Station. \nThe station celebrated its 150th birthday on 23 May 2010 with the unveiling of a plaque and a special train. DESCRIPTION:Exhibition about the history of Callow End Village Hall\, marking its centenary in 2026. \nCallow End Village Hall is marking a century at the centre of village life. In 1924\, the Earl Beauchamp gifted a site in the village to the villagers to build a meeting hall. DESCRIPTION:Legendary fantasy authors JRR Tolkien and CS Lewis were frequent visitors to the Malvern Hills around the middle of the 20th century and the distinctive landscape may have inspired features of Middle Earth and Narnia\, like the Giant’s Cave from The Hobbit and the Victorian gas lamps from The Lion\, the Witch & the Wardrobe. \nA century earlier\, authors Charles Darwin and Charles Dickens visited Malvern for the Water Cure and most of the treatment centres and guest houses still remain. \nThe Malvern Hills Literary Loop starts at the Mr. Tumnus bench in Priory Park and heads up past Knotsford House where Dickens stayed to Lewis’s former school Cherbourg House before pausing at the Lewis Memorial in Rosebank Gardens and following the gas lamps up to St. Ann’s Well cafe. \nAfter admiring the views around North Hill\, the trail descends to Alexandra Rd where Lewis’s close friend & biographer George Sayer lived\, opposite the former home of composer Edward Elgar. \nThe loop then heads up past Montreal House where Darwin stayed during his daughter’s treatment and past Lewis & Tolkien’s favourite pub The Unicorn Inn before passing the Hobbit door and down to Malvern Priory to find Anne Darwin’s grave and potentially the original Narnian gas lamp. \nDates and booking\nThe walks are available on many dates\, often with the option of two start times on the same day. DESCRIPTION:In December 2025\, the National Lottery Heritage Fund made a delivery grant award of £561\,305 for the restoration of the tower\, spire and south nave roof at this lovely grade II-listed 14th century church. The building work started on 6 July 2026\, which makes the open day unique and special. \nThe organisers can offer three pre-booked ‘hard hat’ visits: 10am\, 11.30am and 2pm on Tuesday 15 September for small groups of up to 10 people. Because the work is in progress\, all visitors must be over 18. The building work started on 6 July 2026\, which makes the open day unique and special. \nThe organisers can offer three pre-booked ‘hard hat’ visits: 10am\, 11.30am and 2pm on Tuesday 15 September for small groups of up to 10 people. Because the work is in progress\, all visitors must be over 18. Refreshments will be available along with a free copies of the church history. \nPre-booking is essential by text or WhatsApp message to 07784 064383. DESCRIPTION:A half-hour tour of the Priory with a focus on the architecture and how it developed over the years. DESCRIPTION:Tony Spicer will give a free evening talk about the Battle of Upton at The Tudor House Museum on Tuesday 15 September 2026 from 7pm – 9pm. \nThe Battle of Upton was fought on 28 August 1651 when a New Model Army detachment under the command of Colonel John Lambert made a surprise attack on Royalists defending the Severn crossing at Upton-upon-Severn\, 6 miles downstream of Worcester. In the action that followed\, the Royalist commander Major General Edward Massey was seriously wounded and the surviving Royalists were driven out of the town and north along the Worcester Road. \nThe successful attack allowed Parliamentary forces to approach Worcester from the west and was an important action in completing Cromwell’s investment of Worcester as a prelude to his assault and capture of the city. \nFor this event\, please ensure you book your free place in advance using the details on the Heritage Open Days website\, where you will also find more information about the event. \nTimings\nTuesday 15 September 2026: 7pm – 9pm

Other names will include James Cranston\, the designer of the town’s iconic Pump Rooms\, and Thomas Mantle\, a coal carver who tried to give Princess Victoria a carving as her carriage stopped to change horses at a local hotel. SUMMARY:Guided Tour of Great Malvern Station (Heritage Open Days)
DESCRIPTION:Great Malvern is fortunate to have one of the best preserved stations in the country; it has recently benefited from a major refurbishment. \nGreat Malvern station was opened by the Worcester and Hereford Railway in 1860 and the present buildings\, by architect Edmund Wallace Elmslie\, were completed in 1862. The Midland Railway and the London and North Western Railway collaborated on the construction cost; the solicitor\, Samuel Carter\, was also solicitor to both of these major companies. It was later absorbed by the Great Western Railway. \nLocal landowner Lady Emily Foley was a key sponsor of the building of the station. She had a waiting room made for her exclusive use at Great Malvern Station. \nThe station celebrated its 150th birthday on 23 May 2010 with the unveiling of a plaque and a special train.
