DESCRIPTION:Legendary fantasy authors JRR Tolkien and CS Lewis were frequent visitors to the Malvern Hills around the middle of the 20th century and the distinctive landscape may have inspired features of Middle Earth and Narnia\, like the Giant’s Cave from The Hobbit and the Victorian gas lamps from The Lion\, the Witch & the Wardrobe. \nA century earlier\, authors Charles Darwin and Charles Dickens visited Malvern for the Water Cure and most of the treatment centres and guest houses still remain. \nThe Malvern Hills Literary Loop starts at the Mr. Tumnus bench in Priory Park and heads up past Knotsford House where Dickens stayed to Lewis’s former school Cherbourg House before pausing at the Lewis Memorial in Rosebank Gardens and following the gas lamps up to St. Ann’s Well cafe. \nAfter admiring the views around North Hill\, the trail descends to Alexandra Rd where Lewis’s close friend & biographer George Sayer lived\, opposite the former home of composer Edward Elgar. \nThe loop then heads up past Montreal House where Darwin stayed during his daughter’s treatment and past Lewis & Tolkien’s favourite pub The Unicorn Inn before passing the Hobbit door and down to Malvern Priory to find Anne Darwin’s grave and potentially the original Narnian gas lamp. \nDates and booking\nThe walks are available on many dates\, often with the option of two start times on the same day. SUMMARY:Guided Tour of Great Malvern Priory
DESCRIPTION:Come and explore the fascinating history and unique treasures of Great Malvern Priory from its Norman origins to the present day. Discover more about the glories of this architectural gem\, with its beautiful stained glass\, medieval tiles and misericords. \nThere are guided tours most Saturday mornings at 11am and occasionally at 2pm (or very occasionally at other times). Please check the Priory Church calendar to confirm that a tour is going ahead on the day of your visit. \nDonations are welcomed and all money from the tours goes towards the ongoing repairs and restoration of the Priory building and the medieval glass windows. \nIn addition to the scheduled Saturday tours\, groups tours are available by prior arrangement on any day between 9am and 5pm as long as the Priory is not being used for another event. DESCRIPTION:Male voice choirs are synonymous with Wales and Malvern’s very own male voice choir will be celebrating the country sometimes referred to as ‘The Land of Song’ on the eve of the day that commemorates its patron saint\, St. David. \nThe Choir will perform a wide array of music in the relaxed atmosphere of Malvern Cube with Welsh Male Voice Choir standards\, songs from stage and screen\, and a varied mix from the ’60s and much more recently. DESCRIPTION:Folk at The Fold is a monthly folk club held in the Cart House at The Fold – beautiful half-timbered surroundings with lovely acoustics – perfect for the folk songs that you love to sing or hear among genuine folk friends. \nThese are lively\, often humorous and always varied monthly folk evenings led by Eric and Eileen Payne. \nThe club runs every 4th Saturday (except December – 3rd Saturday) of the month from 7.30pm to 10.30pm. \nThe entrance fee is £2.50\, payable on the door.
