SUMMARY:Levellers Collective
DESCRIPTION:After two highly acclaimed acoustic tours and albums in recent years\, the Levellers Collective are embarking on a new 17-date tour in Spring 2025 at theatres and venues around the country\, plus a live album & DVD. \nThe Collective live shows\, and albums\, arose after the Levellers decided to do something a bit different with their extensive back catalogue in 2018. Together with members of fellow Brighton group The Moulettes\, they went on to record two albums radically reworking their songs – with producer John Leckie (We The Collective) and Sean Lakeman (Together All The Way). \nThe new acoustic arrangements of those Levellers songs\, old and new\, can now also be seen and heard on a new live album & DVD which was recorded in 2023 at London’s iconic Hackney Empire. The recording captures the spirit of the Levellers on stage as never seen before as multiple cameras were positioned around the band for the making of the film and the result is a truly privileged vantage point.

SUMMARY:Macbeth: David Tennant & Cush Jumbo (Pre-Recorded Broadcast)
DESCRIPTION:David Tennant (Doctor Who\, Broadchurch) and Cush Jumbo (The Good Wife\, Criminal Record) lead a stellar cast in an ‘enthralling’ (★★★★★ Daily Telegraph) new production of Shakespeare’s Macbeth\, filmed at the Donmar Warehouse in London\, especially for the big screen. Unsettling intimacy and brutal action combine at breakneck speed as Max Webster (Life of Pi\, Henry V) directs this tragic tale of love\, murder\, and nature’s power of renewal. This unassuming building is an excellent resource for the local community and is run by a few paid staff and a large team of dedicated volunteers. Since MBB first performed at the Cube\, its members have become increasingly aware of how vital it is to many groups in Malvern – not only to performers\, but also to the health and well-being of everyone who participates in one of the many activities there. By the time of this concert in March 2025\, MBB will have performed at the Cube eight times since its first visit in 2021\, so it is\, without a doubt\, the right venue for the band. As a group\, it offers them the best possible combination of performing facilities and audience accommodation. \nMalvern Cube will always need to develop and maintain its facilities. So\, by purchasing a ticket and coming to this concert (or buying a ticket for someone else) you will be helping to secure its future. \nTickets are available from Malvern Cube (buy online) priced at £12 (18 years and under: £6.00; 10 and under: free) or on the door at £14/£7 (cash only please\, no card/contactless facilities available). \nDoors open at 7pm for a 7.30pm start. \nThis is expected to be a popular event and therefore booking tickets in good time is advisable\, rather than risking buying them on the door. \nRefreshments will be available from the bar throughout the evening (card or cash).

SUMMARY:Ellen Kent: La Boheme
DESCRIPTION:Senbla presents Opera International’s award-winning Ellen Kent Production of Puccini’s La Boheme\, featuring the Ukrainian Opera & Ballet Theatre Kyiv\, with international soloists\, highly-praised chorus and full orchestra. \nDirected by Ellen Kent\, this brand-new production is traditionally staged and boasts beautiful sets and costumes. \nLa Boheme is one of the most romantic operas ever written\, telling the tragic story of the doomed\, consumptive Mimi and her love for a penniless writer. \nThe set evokes the Bohemian art of the period and will include snow effects\, whilst Muzetta’s dog will also make an appearance. \nThe work will be sung in Italian with English surtitles.

SUMMARY:Ode to Joyce
DESCRIPTION:Apollo Theatre Company presents\, by arrangement with Concord Theatricals Ltd on behalf of Samuel French Ltd\, Ode to Joyce: A selection of the songs and monologues of Joyce Grenfell\, adapted and performed by Cheryl Knight and directed by Paul Knight. \nJoyce Grenfell was one of the greatest female entertainers of the twentieth century\, loved all over the world for her hilarious and beautifully observed monologues and songs\, as well as numerous film\, television and radio appearances. Conceived to mark her centenary year and playing to sell-out audiences at the Edinburgh Festival\, this revue has been delighting theatre-goers ever since. In this gem of nostalgia\, which recreates the setting of one of Joyce’s stage shows\, Cheryl Knight\, starring in her own adaptation\, captures Grenfell’s spirit through the well-known songs and monologues as well as some of her more delicate and poignant pieces.

SUMMARY:Malvern Civic Society: Monthly Talk
DESCRIPTION:Malvern Civic Society welcomes both members and visitors at its monthly talks\, held at the Eden Centre. \nThe cost of admission is £3 and doors open an hour before the start of the talk to give time for tea\, coffee\, biscuits and chat. \nProgramme for 2025\nFriday 11 April\, 7.30pm\nThe History and Development of the Three Counties Showground\nDavid Prescott (CEO\, Three Counties Agricultural Society) will talk about the history and development of Malvern’s Three Counties Showground. He will relate factual stories from the past and will also share some of the plans for continuing success. \nFriday 9 May\, 7.30pm\nMadresfield Estate\nJonathan Chenevix-Trench will explain how\, as custodians not only of the splendid Madresfield Court itself and its long history\, but also of the farmland\, woods and meadows that make up the Madresfield Estate\, the Trustees and their team on the ground adopt a long-term approach to all major decisions. Hear how both the Court and the Estate are cared for so that they will be enjoyed by visitors and walkers for decades to come. \nFriday 13 June\, 7.30pm\nButterflies of the Malvern Hills\nLocal expert Mel Mason will show how butterflies are indicators of biodiversity and the health of our environment. Sadly\, we have lost seven local species over the last four decades\, but the reintroduction of the pearl-bordered fritillary is an exciting project to buck this trend. Discover also how butterflies link with Sir Edward Elgar and his close friend the architect Arthur Troyte Griffith. \nFriday 11 July\, 7.30pm\nFlorence Nightingale in Malvern\nLocal historian Cora Weaver\, who has written and lectured extensively on Florence Nightingale and the Malvern Water Cure\, will detail how the founder of modern nursing regarded Malvern as her hospital town. When Nightingale required medical assistance she came to Malvern\, visiting nine times. This talk provides a chance to find out the truth about the Lady with the Lamp\, how ill she really was and why. There’s more to this story than you might imagine! \nFriday 8 August\, 7.30pm\nThe Police & Crime Commissioner for West Mercia\nJohn Campion (PCC West Mercia) will outline his role in this position and what police do in the area. \nFriday 12 September\, 7.30pm\nMalvern Rocks: The History of Quarrying in Malvern\nThose members and visitors who have moved to the Malvern area since the ’70s and ’80s will have known little of the effect of quarrying on the town and the hills. This impacts included the dangers\, the noise\, the turmoil and the scarring of the hills. Elaine Tomlinson’s talk will be your chance to find out about the geology of the rocks\, how they were exploited by industry and what it took to preserve the hills for future generations to enjoy. \nFriday 10 October\, 7.30pm\nNeedle Making in Worcestershire and Warwickshire\nRichard Churchly will discuss the start of the local needle trade around 1640 and explain how it developed from a tiny cottage industry into a significant force in the Redditch area. By 1900\, it employed tens of thousands of people\, whose labour produced all types of needles for export all around the globe. \nFriday 14 November\, 7.30pm\nThe King’s Thirds\nGeorge Demidowicz will tell the story of how a cash-strapped King Charles I attempted to raise revenue by exploiting the rights he enjoyed over the Royal Forests or Chases such that found in and around Malvern. These he shared with the neighbouring lords. The arrangement was that he gave up his rights over the “venison and vert” across the Chase on the basis that he would be allowed to enclose a third of the area. This\, the “King’s Thirds”\, could then be leased or sold to raise revenue.
