A romantic assignation gone horribly wrong? A spy caught and executed? A victim of local witchcraft? Or just an ordinary woman in the wrong place at the wrong time? What really happened to ‘Bella’? \nA retiring police sergeant hands the case over to a young constable. Together they sift through the evidence and attempt to make sense of the multiple voices which weave through the witness statements\, correspondence and police reports\, which\, from the very start\, merge fact with fiction. \nDrawing on original historical documents\, this play gives ‘Bella’ back her own voice. DESCRIPTION:Adapted by Clive Francis from Graham Greene’s novel of the same title\, Our Man in Havana follows the hilarious exploits of James Wormold\, a British vacuum cleaner salesman in pre-revolutionary Havana\, Cuba. \nStruggling financially to support his spoiled daughter\, Wormold is recruited by MI6 agent Hawthorne to be a spy. In her teens as the First World War broke out\, she chose to break in Canadian horses in nearby Prestbury Park for the war effort. \nSo why then did she leave her comfortable life in Cheltenham behind to buy a Cornish headland for £100? \nTogether with her gardener Billy Rawlings\, she worked endlessly\, transforming a gorse and rocky Cornish cliff-face into an open-air theatre with just hand tools and an occasional stick of dynamite. \nThe Minack is a living theatre in every sense. Its dramatic setting is breathtaking in any weather and the remarkable woman who built it is equally inspiring. \nThis play was written by local playwright Rachel Tobin\, who also serves as producer and director\, and is performed by actors from Malvern Skyline Productions. SUMMARY:Malvern Hills Literary Loop: Tolkien\, Lewis\, Darwin and Dickens
DESCRIPTION:Legendary fantasy authors JRR Tolkien and CS Lewis were frequent visitors to the Malvern Hills around the middle of the 20th century and the distinctive landscape may have inspired features of Middle Earth and Narnia\, like the Giant’s Cave from The Hobbit and the Victorian gas lamps from The Lion\, the Witch & the Wardrobe. \nA century earlier\, authors Charles Darwin and Charles Dickens visited Malvern for the Water Cure and most of the treatment centres and guest houses still remain. \nThe Malvern Hills Literary Loop starts at the Mr. Tumnus bench in Priory Park and heads up past Knotsford House where Dickens stayed to Lewis’s former school Cherbourg House before pausing at the Lewis Memorial in Rosebank Gardens and following the gas lamps up to St. Ann’s Well cafe. \nAfter admiring the views around North Hill\, the trail descends to Alexandra Rd where Lewis’s close friend & biographer George Sayer lived\, opposite the former home of composer Edward Elgar. \nThe loop then heads up past Montreal House where Darwin stayed during his daughter’s treatment and past Lewis & Tolkien’s favourite pub The Unicorn Inn before passing the Hobbit door and down to Malvern Priory to find Anne Darwin’s grave and potentially the original Narnian gas lamp. \nDates and booking\nThe walks are available on many dates\, often with the option of two start times on the same day. DESCRIPTION:Legendary fantasy authors JRR Tolkien and CS Lewis were frequent visitors to the Malvern Hills around the middle of the 20th century and the distinctive landscape may have inspired features of Middle Earth and Narnia\, like the Giant’s Cave from The Hobbit and the Victorian gas lamps from The Lion\, the Witch & the Wardrobe. \nA century earlier\, authors Charles Darwin and Charles Dickens visited Malvern for the Water Cure and most of the treatment centres and guest houses still remain. \nThe Malvern Hills Literary Loop starts at the Mr. Tumnus bench in Priory Park and heads up past Knotsford House where Dickens stayed to Lewis’s former school Cherbourg House before pausing at the Lewis Memorial in Rosebank Gardens and following the gas lamps up to St. Ann’s Well cafe. \nAfter admiring the views around North Hill\, the trail descends to Alexandra Rd where Lewis’s close friend & biographer George Sayer lived\, opposite the former home of composer Edward Elgar. \nThe loop then heads up past Montreal House where Darwin stayed during his daughter’s treatment and past Lewis & Tolkien’s favourite pub The Unicorn Inn before passing the Hobbit door and down to Malvern Priory to find Anne Darwin’s grave and potentially the original Narnian gas lamp. \nDates and booking\nThe walks are available on many dates\, often with the option of two start times on the same day. DESCRIPTION:The Malvern Local Group of the Worcestershire Wildlife Trust holds monthly indoor meetings from May to September (first Thursday of the month)\, offering talks on wildlife-related topics of local\, national (and sometimes international) interest. \nEntrance costs £3 for adults (no charge for children)\, including refreshments.
