SUMMARY:Malvern Hills Literary Loop: Tolkien\, Lewis\, Darwin & Dickens
DESCRIPTION:Legendary fantasy authors JRR Tolkien and CS Lewis were frequent visitors to the Malvern Hills around the middle of the 20th century and the distinctive landscape may have inspired features of Middle Earth and Narnia\, like the Giant’s Cave from the Hobbit and the Victorian gas lamps from The Lion\, the Witch & the Wardrobe. \nA century earlier\, authors Charles Darwin and Charles Dickens visited Malvern for the Water Cure and most of the treatment centres and guest houses still remain. \nThe Malvern Hills Literary Loop starts at the Mr. Tumnus bench in Priory Park and heads up past Knotsford House where Dickens stayed to Lewis’s former school Cherbourg House before pausing at the Lewis Memorial in Rosebank Gardens and following the gas lamps up to St. Ann’s Well cafe. \nAfter admiring the views around North Hill\, the trail descends to Alexandra Rd where Lewis’s close friend & biographer George Sayers lived\, opposite the former home of composer Edward Elgar. \nThe loop then heads up past Montreal House where Darwin stayed during his daughter’s treatment and past Lewis & Tolkien’s favourite pub The Unicorn Inn before passing the Hobbit door and down to Malvern Priory to find Anne Darwin’s grave and potentially the original Narnian gas lamp. \nDates and booking\nThe walks are available on many dates\, often with the option of two start times on the same day. For more information\, including prices\, availability and to book. visit the Malvern Hills Literary Loop: Tolkien\, Lewis\, Darwin & Dickens page on Airbnb.

SUMMARY:Nigel Kennedy: Vivaldi's 'The Four Seasons' – The Real Deal
DESCRIPTION:Nigel Kennedy (violin/director) alongside the Oxford Philharmonic Orchestra \nProgramme\nNigel Kennedy Dla Jarka\nNigel Kennedy Melody In The Wind\nNigel Kennedy Fallen Forest\nNigel Kennedy Solitude\nNigel Kennedy Gibb It\nInterval \nVivaldi The Four Seasons \n36 years ago\, a young violinist changed the landscape of British music with an electrifying recording of four violin concertos by Antonio Vivaldi. The violinist was Nigel Kennedy\, and the concertos were The Four Seasons – masterpieces of mood\, evocation and musical storytelling that take listeners on an imaginary journey through the unbridled joys of Spring\, the oppressive heat of Summer\, the melancholy resignation of Autumn and the brutal ferocity of Winter. \nThree centuries since the publication of Vivaldi’s concertos in Venice\, Kennedy returns to the pieces that made his name and to which he brought such staggering verve and spirit back in 1989. With him\, he brings an ensemble on the ascent: the Oxford Philharmonic Orchestra\, which includes some of the finest instrumental players in Britain and enjoys relationships with a select handful of the world’s leading soloists. \nThe composer’s Five Dedications – part of his self-penned collection My World – are deeply personal pieces straddling the worlds of pop\, jazz and folk in which the violinist pays tribute to musicians whose works have shaped him with luscious tunefulness and heartfelt playing. Don’t miss this opportunity to hear one musical icon breathe life into another\, and reveal a little of his intriguing self too. \nShow times\nFriday 16 May 2025\, 7pm\nSaturday 17 May 2025\, 7pm
