SUMMARY:Malvern Hills Cultural Walk
DESCRIPTION:Legendary fantasy authors JRR Tolkien and CS Lewis were frequent visitors to Malvern and the Malvern Hills and the distinctive landscape is thought to have inspired many features of Middle Earth and Narnia\, including the Giant’s Cave from The Hobbit and the Victorian gas lamps from The Lion\, the Witch & the Wardrobe. \nYou’ll choose between two routes\, the Tolkien Trail & the Lewis Loop\, both of which are outlined below. \nThe Tolkien Trail follows the main ridge south from the Wyche Cutting\, over several summits to the Giant’s Cave\, which is said to have inspired Tolkien’s first book\, The Hobbit. The trail then returns north\, with optional stops at the Malvern Hills Hotel and/or the Kettle Sings Cafe before ending where it began. \nThe Lewis Loop begins in Priory Park in Great Malvern and heads past Malvern College and Cherbourg House\, where Lewis went to school\, before pausing at the Lewis Memorial in Rosebank Gardens. Next it follows Narnia’s gas lamps up Happy Valley past St. Ann’s Well Cafe to the summit of North Hill before dropping down to Alexandra Road in Malvern Link\, where Lewis’s biographer\, George Sayer\, and composer Sir Edward Elgar lived. After passing Lewis and Tolkien’s favourite pub\, The Unicorn Inn on Belle Vue Terrace\, the loop ends at Great Malvern Priory\, home to what’s believed to be the original gas lamp. \nWhichever walk you choose\, you’ll hear tales of literary legends whilst savouring the most stunning views in the West Midlands. \nDates and booking\nThe walks are available on many dates\, often with the option of two start times on the same day. SUMMARY:Scarlet Oak Theatre Present: The Zoo That Comes To You - Great Malvern Festival of Stories
DESCRIPTION:The Zoo That Comes To You follows the impassioned attempts of two animal enthusiasts to share their love of and concern for animals with the world. They take in animals that need respite\, care or a temporary home and have\, accidentally\, ended up with a sanctuary full of animals. However\, no-one has come to visit their zoo! So everybody – animals and humans alike – have decided it is time to get out\, see the world\, and bring the zoo\, to you. \nCome and meet this eclectic group of charming yet cheeky animals\, as they discuss their life experiences and the challenges they face in a rapidly changing world dominated by humans. These animals have a lot to say and want to inspire people of all ages to take action\, because they know small actions can make a big difference in the world. \nFeaturing puppetry\, live music and playful characters\, Scarlet Oak Theatre welcomes you to join the conversation about animal conservation. \nLength of performance: 60 minutes \nPerformances:\n1.45pm\n4pm \nSuitable for ages 5+ but we welcome younger audiences and unaccompanied grownups. \nTickets\nAdult: £8\nChild: £5\nTicket prices include VAT. \n20% multiple event discount available when booked directly with Malvern Theatres box office.\nAll children must be accompanied by an adult. \nWhat’s on at the Great Malvern Festival of Stories for Children. \nThe Great Malvern Festival of Stories for Children is part funded by the UK government through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund. \n

SUMMARY:Malvern Concert Club: The Nash Ensemble
DESCRIPTION:Chamber Ensemble in Residence at Wigmore Hall\, the Nash Ensemble has been presenting an annual themed series there since 1979. The ensemble’s 2023–24 season at Wigmore Hall was entitled ‘Songs from my Homeland – Music from the Czech Lands with works by Brahms’\, and the annual Nash Inventions concert on 26 March this year was a celebration and remembrance of the life and music of Sir Harrison Birtwistle. There was also a concert dedicated to the artists and to the music performed in the Theresienstadt Concentration Camp 1941–1945. Tragically\, many of these wonderful artists were murdered at Auschwitz. \nDuring the 2024-25 season at Wigmore Hall\, the Nash marks its sixtieth anniversary with a range of programmes illustrating the variety of music performed by the Ensemble over the years\, from Mozart to the avant garde. New works being commissioned to celebrate the 60th anniversary are by Julian Anderson\, John Casken\, Helen Grime\, Simon Holt\, Colin Matthews\, David Matthews\, Mark-Anthony Turnage and Huw Watkins. \nArtists\nAlasdair Beatson piano\nGareth Hulse oboe\nRichard Hosford clarinet\nUrsula Leveaux bassoon\nRichard Watkins horn \nProgramme\nBeethoven Piano Quintet in E flat Op.16\nPoulenc Trio for piano\, oboe and bassoon\nIbert Trio for oboe\, clarinet and bassoon\nStravinsky Three Pieces for solo clarinet\nMozart Piano Quintet in E flat K452 \nPhoto © Nash Ensemble
