SUMMARY:Malvern Hills Literary Loop: Tolkien\, Lewis\, Darwin & Dickens
DESCRIPTION:Legendary fantasy authors JRR Tolkien and CS Lewis were frequent visitors to the Malvern Hills around the middle of the 20th century and the distinctive landscape may have inspired features of Middle Earth and Narnia\, like the Giant’s Cave from the Hobbit and the Victorian gas lamps from The Lion\, the Witch & the Wardrobe. \nA century earlier\, authors Charles Darwin and Charles Dickens visited Malvern for the Water Cure and most of the treatment centres and guest houses still remain. \nThe Malvern Hills Literary Loop starts at the Mr. Tumnus bench in Priory Park and heads up past Knotsford House where Dickens stayed to Lewis’s former school Cherbourg House before pausing at the Lewis Memorial in Rosebank Gardens and following the gas lamps up to St. Ann’s Well cafe. \nAfter admiring the views around North Hill\, the trail descends to Alexandra Rd where Lewis’s close friend & biographer George Sayers lived\, opposite the former home of composer Edward Elgar. \nThe loop then heads up past Montreal House where Darwin stayed during his daughter’s treatment and past Lewis & Tolkien’s favourite pub The Unicorn Inn before passing the Hobbit door and down to Malvern Priory to find Anne Darwin’s grave and potentially the original Narnian gas lamp. \nDates and booking\nThe walks are available on many dates\, often with the option of two start times on the same day. For more information\, including prices\, availability and to book. visit the Malvern Hills Literary Loop: Tolkien\, Lewis\, Darwin & Dickens page on Airbnb.

SUMMARY:ESO String Orchestra - Elgar's Strings in Malvern (Elgar Festival 2025)
DESCRIPTION:The English String Orchestra\, conducted by Kenneth Woods\, is joined by Rosalind Ventris (viola). \nPerhaps no other orchestra has done as much to champion the incredible tradition of British music for strings as the legendary English String Orchestra\, whose recordings carry the music of England from Elgar to today to listeners worldwide. William Walton was perhaps the true heir of Elgar’s legacy\, and his Sonata for Strings is one of the highest peaks in the string orchestra literature. The programme begins with a set of short pieces that showcase Elgar’s genius for the miniature and moves on to works showcasing two of today’s most engaging and exciting composers\, Peter Fribbins and Ian Venables. Rosalind Ventris (viola) is the featured soloist.

SUMMARY:Scott Matthews
DESCRIPTION:Greenwood Events presents singer-songwriter Scott Matthews for the tour of his critically acclaimed album Restless Lullabies. \nScott Matthews’ ground-breaking debut album\, Passing Stranger\, earned him serious critical acclaim owing to its bold combination of folk\, rock\, blues and Eastern-inspired songwriting. In 2007\, his first single\, Elusive\, won the Ivor Novello Award for ‘Best Song Musically and Lyrically’. Scott soon went on to perform on a number of international sell-out tours with renowned artists such as Rufus Wainwright\, Bert Jansch\, Robert Plant and Alison Krauss\, Foo Fighters\, Snow Patrol and Tori Amos. \nHis latest album’s acoustic purity creates a subliminal listening experience in which the skeletal delicacy of the songs permits his poetry to breathe\, his transcendent vocal to soar\, and brings his dexterously sensitive guitar playing into microscopic focus. This work further cements his undeniable status as one of our master songsmiths.
