DESCRIPTION:The English String Orchestra\, conducted by Kenneth Woods\, is joined by Rosalind Ventris (viola). \nPerhaps no other orchestra has done as much to champion the incredible tradition of British music for strings as the legendary English String Orchestra\, whose recordings carry the music of England from Elgar to today to listeners worldwide. William Walton was perhaps the true heir of Elgar’s legacy\, and his Sonata for Strings is one of the highest peaks in the string orchestra literature. The programme begins with a set of short pieces that showcase Elgar’s genius for the miniature and moves on to works showcasing two of today’s most engaging and exciting composers\, Peter Fribbins and Ian Venables. Rosalind Ventris (viola) is the featured soloist.

DESCRIPTION:This is a wonderful\, undulating meander in West Malvern and Mathon\, crossing over ridges of Silurian limestone and valleys of Silurian Shale. We pass Hay Slad Spot\, one of the most powerful springs on the hills and an opportunity to fill our water bottles with the fantastic spring water of which Malvern is justifiably proud. 6 stiles and up down of 1\,440 feet. \nSome of the rocks seen near Mathon were formed some 400 million years ago. The archaeology of the older Shire Ditch may be obvious; much less obvious are the hidden features of the King’s Thirds on the northern Malvern Hills. Discover where the banks and ditches were created in the 1630s and their history. \nExploring the King’s enclosures involves some steep sections. DESCRIPTION:Starting at the Florence Nightingale bench in Church Street\, this is an entertaining and informative circular walk around Great Malvern led by a Civic Society guide. The emphasis will be on the town’s varied cultural history\, as well as its role as a centre for the controversial Water Cure in the 19th Century. We’ll hear about such artistic luminaries as Sir Edward Elgar\, Dame Laura Knight\, George Bernard Shaw\, Jenny Lind\, Evelyn Waugh\, CS Lewis and Elizabeth Barret Browning and their connections to Malvern. Plus how the Water Cure attracted the great and the good to this small Worcestershire town\, and how it was the starting point for one of Victorian England’s greatest scandals! Duration: approx 90 minutes. The route will include The Priory\, Belle Vue Terrace\, The Unicorn\, Dr Gully and Dr Wilson’s Water Cure Establishments and Priory Park. \nDue to the hilly nature of the town this is sadly not suitable for those with mobility issues. Includes one steep descent down steps. DESCRIPTION:Back for 2025\, join Malvern Town Council for an 18-week programme running throughout the summer months (with the exception of 6 July) that will see bands from around Worcestershire coming to play in the Priory Park Bandstand. There is something for everyone\, with many genres covered over the season including brass band\, jazz\, pop\, folk\, blues and many more. \nAll concerts run from 2.30pm – 4.30pm (except 17 August 2025\, when there will be an earlier start with an additional band at 1pm) and are free to attend. \nBring a rug or folding chair to sit on if you wish. It’s just a three-minute walk from the park to some of Great Malvern’s wide range of shops and cafes\, where you can purchase a drink\, lunch or treat to enjoy whilst listening to the music. DESCRIPTION:Legendary fantasy authors JRR Tolkien and CS Lewis were frequent visitors to the Malvern Hills around the middle of the 20th century and the distinctive landscape may have inspired features of Middle Earth and Narnia\, like the Giant’s Cave from the Hobbit and the Victorian gas lamps from The Lion\, the Witch & the Wardrobe. \nA century earlier\, authors Charles Darwin and Charles Dickens visited Malvern for the Water Cure and most of the treatment centres and guest houses still remain. \nThe Malvern Hills Literary Loop starts at the Mr. Tumnus bench in Priory Park and heads up past Knotsford House where Dickens stayed to Lewis’s former school Cherbourg House before pausing at the Lewis Memorial in Rosebank Gardens and following the gas lamps up to St. Ann’s Well cafe. \nAfter admiring the views around North Hill\, the trail descends to Alexandra Rd where Lewis’s close friend & biographer George Sayers lived\, opposite the former home of composer Edward Elgar. \nThe loop then heads up past Montreal House where Darwin stayed during his daughter’s treatment and past Lewis & Tolkien’s favourite pub The Unicorn Inn before passing the Hobbit door and down to Malvern Priory to find Anne Darwin’s grave and potentially the original Narnian gas lamp. \nDates and booking\nThe walks are available on many dates\, often with the option of two start times on the same day.
