SUMMARY:Malvern Hills Literary Loop: Tolkien\, Lewis\, Darwin & Dickens
DESCRIPTION:Legendary fantasy authors JRR Tolkien and CS Lewis were frequent visitors to the Malvern Hills around the middle of the 20th century and the distinctive landscape may have inspired features of Middle Earth and Narnia\, like the Giant’s Cave from the Hobbit and the Victorian gas lamps from The Lion\, the Witch & the Wardrobe. \nA century earlier\, authors Charles Darwin and Charles Dickens visited Malvern for the Water Cure and most of the treatment centres and guest houses still remain. \nThe Malvern Hills Literary Loop starts at the Mr. Tumnus bench in Priory Park and heads up past Knotsford House where Dickens stayed to Lewis’s former school Cherbourg House before pausing at the Lewis Memorial in Rosebank Gardens and following the gas lamps up to St. Ann’s Well cafe. \nAfter admiring the views around North Hill\, the trail descends to Alexandra Rd where Lewis’s close friend & biographer George Sayers lived\, opposite the former home of composer Edward Elgar. \nThe loop then heads up past Montreal House where Darwin stayed during his daughter’s treatment and past Lewis & Tolkien’s favourite pub The Unicorn Inn before passing the Hobbit door and down to Malvern Priory to find Anne Darwin’s grave and potentially the original Narnian gas lamp. \nDates and booking\nThe walks are available on many dates\, often with the option of two start times on the same day. For more information\, including prices\, availability and to book. visit the Malvern Hills Literary Loop: Tolkien\, Lewis\, Darwin & Dickens page on Airbnb.

SUMMARY:Armonico Consort: Rachmaninov Vespers by Candlelight
DESCRIPTION:Candlelit choral concert brings chance to unwind and reflect: Rachmaninov’s Vespers by Candlelight \nThe renowned choral group Armonico Consort is to give a summer evening candlelit performance of Rachmaninov’s glorious Vespers at Malvern Theatres on 8 July 2025. \nRachmaninov’s great choral achievement provides a chance to experience an hour of contemplation and mindfulness in an evocative candlelit setting. \nWritten in 1915\, while Rachmaninov was on a concert tour of Russia to support the war effort\, this is music that brought consolation as well as a yearning for peace in the depths of war. It was hugely popular from the outset and Rachmaninov said\, ‘Even in my wildest dreams I could not have imagined that I could write such a work.’ He hoped its fifth movement would be played at his funeral. \nThe rich and sonorous tones of the Vespers are steeped in the long tradition of the Russian Orthodox Church and Rachmaninov found a way of turning the unaccompanied voices into an orchestra\, with singers frequently dividing into multiple parts. \nLed by founder-director Christopher Monks\, Armonico Consort is one of today’s leading vocal groups\, especially known for its innovative concerts of choral masterpieces\, and its critically-acclaimed performances and recordings. \nChristopher Monks says\, ‘Rachmaninov Vespers is simply the most gorgeous choral music ever to have been written\, and for a moment in time\, simply nothing else will matter.’ \n

SUMMARY:Malvern Civic Society: Monthly Talk
DESCRIPTION:Malvern Civic Society welcomes both members and visitors at its monthly talks\, held at the Eden Centre. \nThe cost of admission is £3 and doors open an hour before the start of the talk to give time for tea\, coffee\, biscuits and chat. \nProgramme for 2025\nFriday 11 April\, 7.30pm\nThe History and Development of the Three Counties Showground\nDavid Prescott (CEO\, Three Counties Agricultural Society) will talk about the history and development of Malvern’s Three Counties Showground. He will relate factual stories from the past and will also share some of the plans for continuing success. \nFriday 9 May\, 7.30pm\nMadresfield Estate\nJonathan Chenevix-Trench will explain how\, as custodians not only of the splendid Madresfield Court itself and its long history\, but also of the farmland\, woods and meadows that make up the Madresfield Estate\, the Trustees and their team on the ground adopt a long-term approach to all major decisions. Hear how both the Court and the Estate are cared for so that they will be enjoyed by visitors and walkers for decades to come. \nFriday 13 June\, 7.30pm\nButterflies of the Malvern Hills\nLocal expert Mel Mason will show how butterflies are indicators of biodiversity and the health of our environment. Sadly\, we have lost seven local species over the last four decades\, but the reintroduction of the pearl-bordered fritillary is an exciting project to buck this trend. Discover also how butterflies link with Sir Edward Elgar and his close friend the architect Arthur Troyte Griffith. \nFriday 11 July\, 7.30pm\nFlorence Nightingale in Malvern\nLocal historian Cora Weaver\, who has written and lectured extensively on Florence Nightingale and the Malvern Water Cure\, will detail how the founder of modern nursing regarded Malvern as her hospital town. When Nightingale required medical assistance she came to Malvern\, visiting nine times. This talk provides a chance to find out the truth about the Lady with the Lamp\, how ill she really was and why. There’s more to this story than you might imagine! \nFriday 8 August\, 7.30pm\nThe Police & Crime Commissioner for West Mercia\nJohn Campion (PCC West Mercia) will outline his role in this position and what police do in the area. \nFriday 12 September\, 7.30pm\nMalvern Rocks: The History of Quarrying in Malvern\nThose members and visitors who have moved to the Malvern area since the ’70s and ’80s will have known little of the effect of quarrying on the town and the hills. This impacts included the dangers\, the noise\, the turmoil and the scarring of the hills. Elaine Tomlinson’s talk will be your chance to find out about the geology of the rocks\, how they were exploited by industry and what it took to preserve the hills for future generations to enjoy. \nFriday 10 October\, 7.30pm\nNeedle Making in Worcestershire and Warwickshire\nRichard Churchly will discuss the start of the local needle trade around 1640 and explain how it developed from a tiny cottage industry into a significant force in the Redditch area. By 1900\, it employed tens of thousands of people\, whose labour produced all types of needles for export all around the globe. \nFriday 14 November\, 7.30pm\nThe King’s Thirds\nGeorge Demidowicz will tell the story of how a cash-strapped King Charles I attempted to raise revenue by exploiting the rights he enjoyed over the Royal Forests or Chases such that found in and around Malvern. These he shared with the neighbouring lords. The arrangement was that he gave up his rights over the “venison and vert” across the Chase on the basis that he would be allowed to enclose a third of the area. This\, the “King’s Thirds”\, could then be leased or sold to raise revenue.

SUMMARY:'A Bright Cold Day: The Wonder of George Orwell' by Nathan Waddell - Book Talk
DESCRIPTION:When we picture Orwell\, we imagine an angular\, moustachioed sceptic crouched over a typewriter\, who – between puffs on his cigarette – composes effortless streams of prose\, unadorned but explosive. We see a man with ‘Important Things to Say’ about: the slow creep of authoritarianism; the consequences of all-seeing tech; and the fragility of truth. \nMuch less often do we see him as a person caught up in the mundane realities of everyday life. And yet Orwell’s work thrums with the quotidian: the smell of boiled cabbage\, the chill of an unheated flat in early spring\, the rumbling of old pipes. \nIn A Bright Cold Day\, Waddell\, Professor of Twentieth-Century Literature at the University of Birmingham\, reveals how the principles that govern us begin in the everyday. From waking and showering to breakfast\, work\, lunch\, the pub\, sleep and dreaming\, Orwell was never dulled to the routines of living. And in the details of the day\, we can appreciate how power\, money\, freedom and choice play out\, not just for Orwell’s literary characters\, but for us all. \nTickets: £7 (entitles the buyer to £3 off the book at the event; one book per ticket) – available online at Ticketsource or on 01684 368187

However\, the pact comes with a price: Gwendolethe warns that\, when she selects a lover\, she will become mortal again\, and her immortality will be transferred to her lover. \nFaced with a host of fine suitors from a galaxy of time periods and cultures\, including Spain\, Russia\, The Cotswolds\, Paris\, and New Orleans\, just one question remains for Laura: who will she choose? \nFor the Lack of Laura\, the new stage musical from Kurt Rosenberg\, is a tale that explores the exciting themes of love\, magic and wanderlust. It is suitable for all the family to enjoy and promises to be a show you won’t soon forget! \nShow times\nWednesday 16 July 2025\, 7.45pm\nThursday 17 July 2025\, 7.45pm\nFriday 18 July 2025\, 7.45pm\nSaturday 19 July 2025\, 7.45pm

SUMMARY:The Unwanted (Malvern Ink & Curtain Festival)
DESCRIPTION:The Unwanted is written and directed by Sarah Hutton. \nOn the first evening in their new home in Malvern\, Lucy and Tom hear a knock at the front door and discover that they have a visitor. \nWhat starts as an ostensibly straightforward misunderstanding soon develops into an evening of confusion\, fear and ultimately eerie poignancy\, as the couple are compelled to confront buried and unacknowledged truths about both themselves\, and each other. \nShortlisted for the Malvern Theatres’ Three Counties Stage Writing Competition\, The Unwanted is a new piece of writing exploring whether we can ever be sure that the decisions we make are the right ones – or whether we will be forever haunted by the things we did…or perhaps didn’t do?
