SUMMARY:Malvern Civic Society: Monthly Talk
DESCRIPTION:Malvern Civic Society welcomes both members and visitors at its monthly talks\, held at the Eden Centre. \nThe cost of admission is £3 and doors open an hour before the start of the talk to give time for tea\, coffee\, biscuits and chat. \nProgramme for 2025\nFriday 11 April\, 7.30pm\nThe History and Development of the Three Counties Showground\nDavid Prescott (CEO\, Three Counties Agricultural Society) will talk about the history and development of Malvern’s Three Counties Showground. He will relate factual stories from the past and will also share some of the plans for continuing success. \nFriday 9 May\, 7.30pm\nMadresfield Estate\nJonathan Chenevix-Trench will explain how\, as custodians not only of the splendid Madresfield Court itself and its long history\, but also of the farmland\, woods and meadows that make up the Madresfield Estate\, the Trustees and their team on the ground adopt a long-term approach to all major decisions. Hear how both the Court and the Estate are cared for so that they will be enjoyed by visitors and walkers for decades to come. \nFriday 13 June\, 7.30pm\nButterflies of the Malvern Hills\nLocal expert Mel Mason will show how butterflies are indicators of biodiversity and the health of our environment. Sadly\, we have lost seven local species over the last four decades\, but the reintroduction of the pearl-bordered fritillary is an exciting project to buck this trend. Discover also how butterflies link with Sir Edward Elgar and his close friend the architect Arthur Troyte Griffith. \nFriday 11 July\, 7.30pm\nFlorence Nightingale in Malvern\nLocal historian Cora Weaver\, who has written and lectured extensively on Florence Nightingale and the Malvern Water Cure\, will detail how the founder of modern nursing regarded Malvern as her hospital town. When Nightingale required medical assistance she came to Malvern\, visiting nine times. This talk provides a chance to find out the truth about the Lady with the Lamp\, how ill she really was and why. There’s more to this story than you might imagine! \nFriday 8 August\, 7.30pm\nThe Police & Crime Commissioner for West Mercia\nJohn Campion (PCC West Mercia) will outline his role in this position and what police do in the area. \nFriday 12 September\, 7.30pm\nMalvern Rocks: The History of Quarrying in Malvern\nThose members and visitors who have moved to the Malvern area since the ’70s and ’80s will have known little of the effect of quarrying on the town and the hills. This impacts included the dangers\, the noise\, the turmoil and the scarring of the hills. Elaine Tomlinson’s talk will be your chance to find out about the geology of the rocks\, how they were exploited by industry and what it took to preserve the hills for future generations to enjoy. \nFriday 10 October\, 7.30pm\nNeedle Making in Worcestershire and Warwickshire\nRichard Churchly will discuss the start of the local needle trade around 1640 and explain how it developed from a tiny cottage industry into a significant force in the Redditch area. By 1900\, it employed tens of thousands of people\, whose labour produced all types of needles for export all around the globe. \nFriday 14 November\, 7.30pm\nThe King’s Thirds\nGeorge Demidowicz will tell the story of how a cash-strapped King Charles I attempted to raise revenue by exploiting the rights he enjoyed over the Royal Forests or Chases such that found in and around Malvern. These he shared with the neighbouring lords. The arrangement was that he gave up his rights over the “venison and vert” across the Chase on the basis that he would be allowed to enclose a third of the area. This\, the “King’s Thirds”\, could then be leased or sold to raise revenue.

SUMMARY:Malvern Museum (Heritage Open Days)
DESCRIPTION:Why not visit Malvern Museum in the medieval Priory Gatehouse in the heart of Great Malvern? There’s free entry on Saturday 13 September 2025 from 10am until 4.30pm. \nThe town’s ancient monastic gatehouse is home to Malvern Museum of Local History. There are countless tales of old\, from life on the exposed prehistoric hill forts to the medieval forest and monastery; from dripping wet sheets of Water Cure patients to Morgan motor cars and the secret work of countless radar scientists. The museum is small yet there is so much to do\, see and hear that many visitors regret not allowing more time for their visit. \nDressing-up activities\, slide shows\, a touchscreen and audio guides offer gentle\, often amusing glimpses into our fascinating past. \nMalvern Museum aims to open daily until the end of October\, but free entry for all applies only on 13 September for Heritage Open Days.

SUMMARY:Malvern Hills Literary Loop: Tolkien\, Lewis\, Darwin & Dickens
DESCRIPTION:Legendary fantasy authors JRR Tolkien and CS Lewis were frequent visitors to the Malvern Hills around the middle of the 20th century and the distinctive landscape may have inspired features of Middle Earth and Narnia\, like the Giant’s Cave from the Hobbit and the Victorian gas lamps from The Lion\, the Witch & the Wardrobe. \nA century earlier\, authors Charles Darwin and Charles Dickens visited Malvern for the Water Cure and most of the treatment centres and guest houses still remain. \nThe Malvern Hills Literary Loop starts at the Mr. Tumnus bench in Priory Park and heads up past Knotsford House where Dickens stayed to Lewis’s former school Cherbourg House before pausing at the Lewis Memorial in Rosebank Gardens and following the gas lamps up to St. Ann’s Well cafe. \nAfter admiring the views around North Hill\, the trail descends to Alexandra Rd where Lewis’s close friend & biographer George Sayers lived\, opposite the former home of composer Edward Elgar. \nThe loop then heads up past Montreal House where Darwin stayed during his daughter’s treatment and past Lewis & Tolkien’s favourite pub The Unicorn Inn before passing the Hobbit door and down to Malvern Priory to find Anne Darwin’s grave and potentially the original Narnian gas lamp. \nDates and booking\nThe walks are available on many dates\, often with the option of two start times on the same day. SUMMARY:Quaker Architecture at Malvern Quaker Meeting House (Heritage Open Days)
DESCRIPTION:Come and have look around Malvern Meeting House\, a Grade II-listed example of ’30s Quaker architecture. \nMalvern Quaker Meeting House is a well-known local landmark on Orchard Road\, situated between Malvern College and the Malvern Theatres. It is not ordinarily open to the public\, except when its rooms are being used for worship or by hirers for weddings\, meetings and children’s play sessions. The Meeting House was designed and built for Malvern Quakers in 1937-38\, and its main room is used twice a week for Quaker Meetings for Worship. \nIn 1937\, Malvern Quakers bought the plot of land in Orchard Road and appealed for funds to build a new Meeting House. They were encouraged by the Quaker Cadbury family\, and Malvern’s proximity to Bournville led to J R Armstrong\, architect to the Bournville Village Trust\, being asked to design the building. His design was influenced by Arts and Crafts principles\, often used for Meeting Houses in the earlier part of the twentieth century. Historic England\, who listed the building in 2019\, note that ‘the meeting house is one of only a small number to be purpose-built in this era and remains an excellent example of the tradition as it was to be found in the interwar period’. \nRefreshments are free\, but donations to a local charity would be welcome. \nTimings & Tours\nMonday 15 September 2025: 2pm – 5pm\nThursday 18 September 2025: 9am – 12pm

SUMMARY:The Party Girls
DESCRIPTION:The Party Girls is a Marlowe Theatre production\, written by Amy Rosenthal and directed by Richard Beecham\, with set design by Simon Kenny\, telling the sensational story of the Mitford sisters. \nThe glamorous Mitford girls cut a glorious swathe through pre-war high society\, amidst the glittering world of debutantes and dukes. SUMMARY:Visit Little Malvern Priory (Heritage Open Days)
DESCRIPTION:The history of Little Malvern Priory can be traced back to the 12th century when it was founded as a small Benedictine community of about fifteen monks under the control of Worcester Cathedral. \nThe most famous of the Episcopal Visitations was that undertaken by Bishop Alcock in 1480\, when he discovered ‘the great ruin of the Church and place’\, and when he discharged the Prior and monks ‘by reasons of their demerits’. According to his own account they ‘builded their Church and put their place of lodging’ into a sufficient state of repair so that the monks were able to return to their Priory in 1482\, having spent two years under correction at Gloucester Abbey. \nBishop Alcock was the tutor to Edward V\, with his brother the Duke of York\, one of the Princes in the Tower. The East window of the Priory portrays Edward V and other members of his family – one of only two portrayals of him. \nTimings & Tours\nWednesday 17 September 2025: 2pm – 4.30pm\nSaturday 20 September 2025: 10.30am – 4.30pm
