SUMMARY:Malvern Hills Literary Loop: Tolkien\, Lewis\, Darwin & Dickens
DESCRIPTION:Legendary fantasy authors JRR Tolkien and CS Lewis were frequent visitors to the Malvern Hills around the middle of the 20th century and the distinctive landscape may have inspired features of Middle Earth and Narnia\, like the Giant’s Cave from the Hobbit and the Victorian gas lamps from The Lion\, the Witch & the Wardrobe. \nA century earlier\, authors Charles Darwin and Charles Dickens visited Malvern for the Water Cure and most of the treatment centres and guest houses still remain. \nThe Malvern Hills Literary Loop starts at the Mr. Tumnus bench in Priory Park and heads up past Knotsford House where Dickens stayed to Lewis’s former school Cherbourg House before pausing at the Lewis Memorial in Rosebank Gardens and following the gas lamps up to St. Ann’s Well cafe. \nAfter admiring the views around North Hill\, the trail descends to Alexandra Rd where Lewis’s close friend & biographer George Sayers lived\, opposite the former home of composer Edward Elgar. \nThe loop then heads up past Montreal House where Darwin stayed during his daughter’s treatment and past Lewis & Tolkien’s favourite pub The Unicorn Inn before passing the Hobbit door and down to Malvern Priory to find Anne Darwin’s grave and potentially the original Narnian gas lamp. \nDates and booking\nThe walks are available on many dates\, often with the option of two start times on the same day. For more information\, including prices\, availability and to book. visit the Malvern Hills Literary Loop: Tolkien\, Lewis\, Darwin & Dickens page on Airbnb.

SUMMARY:Quaker Architecture at Malvern Quaker Meeting House (Heritage Open Days)
DESCRIPTION:Come and have look around Malvern Meeting House\, a Grade II-listed example of ’30s Quaker architecture. \nMalvern Quaker Meeting House is a well-known local landmark on Orchard Road\, situated between Malvern College and the Malvern Theatres. It is not ordinarily open to the public\, except when its rooms are being used for worship or by hirers for weddings\, meetings and children’s play sessions. The Meeting House was designed and built for Malvern Quakers in 1937-38\, and its main room is used twice a week for Quaker Meetings for Worship. \nIn 1937\, Malvern Quakers bought the plot of land in Orchard Road and appealed for funds to build a new Meeting House. They were encouraged by the Quaker Cadbury family\, and Malvern’s proximity to Bournville led to J R Armstrong\, architect to the Bournville Village Trust\, being asked to design the building. His design was influenced by Arts and Crafts principles\, often used for Meeting Houses in the earlier part of the twentieth century. Historic England\, who listed the building in 2019\, note that ‘the meeting house is one of only a small number to be purpose-built in this era and remains an excellent example of the tradition as it was to be found in the interwar period’. \nRefreshments are free\, but donations to a local charity would be welcome. \nTimings & Tours\nMonday 15 September 2025: 2pm – 5pm\nThursday 18 September 2025: 9am – 12pm

SUMMARY:The Party Girls

SUMMARY:Visit Little Malvern Priory (Heritage Open Days)
DESCRIPTION:The history of Little Malvern Priory can be traced back to the 12th century when it was founded as a small Benedictine community of about fifteen monks under the control of Worcester Cathedral. \nThe most famous of the Episcopal Visitations was that undertaken by Bishop Alcock in 1480\, when he discovered ‘the great ruin of the Church and place’\, and when he discharged the Prior and monks ‘by reasons of their demerits’. According to his own account they ‘builded their Church and put their place of lodging’ into a sufficient state of repair so that the monks were able to return to their Priory in 1482\, having spent two years under correction at Gloucester Abbey. \nBishop Alcock was the tutor to Edward V\, with his brother the Duke of York\, one of the Princes in the Tower. The East window of the Priory portrays Edward V and other members of his family – one of only two portrayals of him. \nTimings & Tours\nWednesday 17 September 2025: 2pm – 4.30pm\nSaturday 20 September 2025: 10.30am – 4.30pm

DESCRIPTION:The Party Girls is a Marlowe Theatre production\, written by Amy Rosenthal and directed by Richard Beecham\, with set design by Simon Kenny\, telling the sensational story of the Mitford sisters. \nThe glamorous Mitford girls cut a glorious swathe through pre-war high society\, amidst the glittering world of debutantes and dukes. But as Fascism rises and political storm clouds crackle over carefree country houses\, the bonds of sisterhood are threatened by new and treacherous desires. \nAmy Rosenthal’s compelling\, poignant and witty new play delves into the true story of a family riven by political extremism\, seen through the eyes of Jessica (Decca) Mitford as she battles to stay true to her beliefs. \nNancy hopes to become a celebrated novelist\, Diana and Unity fall for the dangerous\, charismatic leaders of the Far Right in Britain and Germany\, and Debo sets her cap at a Duke. Meanwhile\, Decca crosses continents in her own passionate pursuit of love – but can she ever escape her sisters and her past? \nAge recommendation: 12+ (this production contains a gunshot; the play also contains a reference to suicide and explores the theme of antisemitism) \nShow times\nTuesday 16 September 2025\, 7.30pm\nWednesday 17 September 2025\, 2.30pm\nWednesday 17 September 2025\, 7.30pm\nThursday 18 September 2025\, 2.30pm\nThursday 18 September 2025\, 7.30pm\nFriday 19 September 2025\, 7.30pm\nSaturday 20 September 2025\, 2.30pm\nSaturday 20 September 2025\, 7.30pm

SUMMARY:Guided Tour of Great Malvern Station (Heritage Open Days)
DESCRIPTION:Great Malvern has one of the best preserved stations in the country\, which has recently benefitted from a major refurbishment. \nGreat Malvern station was opened by the Worcester and Hereford Railway in 1860 and the present buildings\, designed by local architect Edmund Wallace Elmslie\, were completed in 1862. The Midland Railway and the London and North Western Railway collaborated on the construction cost; the solicitor\, Samuel Carter\, was also solicitor to both of these major companies. It was later absorbed by the Great Western Railway. \nLady Emily Foley was a key sponsor of the building of Great Malvern station. She had a waiting room reserved there for her exclusive use. \nThe station marked its 150th birthday on 23 May 2010 with the unveiling of a plaque and a special train. An additional part of this celebration was the reinstatement of some of the highly decorated lighting columns around the cab road at the front of the station. \nPre-booking preferred – book via Ticketsource when available
