SUMMARY:Eternal Light: A Choral Celebration of Consolation and Transcendence (Great Malvern Festival of Singing)
DESCRIPTION:Some choral works do more than fill a space with sound — they transform it. Eternal Light brings together music of solace\, radiance\, and quiet exaltation\, performed by the forces of the Great Malvern Festival of Singing with orchestra\, in the soaring acoustic of Great Malvern Priory. \nAt the heart of the programme lies Fauré’s Requiem\, a work unlike any other setting of the Mass for the departed. Gentle\, luminous\, and profoundly humane\, Fauré’s vision is one of peace rather than judgement\, offering consolation through music of tender beauty and inward calm. \nVaughan Williams’s Five Mystical Songs bring expansive lyricism and spiritual ardour to words by George Herbert\, culminating in the exultant ‘Antiphon’\, where baritone soloist and chorus join in music of blazing affirmation. The sense of wonder continues in Parry’s Blest Pair of Sirens\, a towering masterpiece of English choral music whose surging lines and rich harmonies celebrate the mysterious power of song itself. \nThe programme also includes Mendelssohn’s beloved Hear My Prayer\, with its unforgettable plea ‘O for the wings of a dove’\, and Chris Maunu’s Silentium\, a striking contemporary meditation on stillness and awe\, offering a moment of hushed reflection within the larger arc of the evening. \nThe concert features the sublime soprano of Jennifer Clark\, and Roderick Williams OBE\, one of Britain’s most distinguished baritones\, and is conducted by Jeff Stewart. Together with orchestra and chorus\, they present an evening of music that moves from quiet prayer to radiant praise — a journey from stillness into light. \nTickets\n£20 – available to book online

SUMMARY:"Love flows as the brook flows…" (Great Malvern Festival of Singing)
DESCRIPTION:Featuring Roderick Williams OBE (baritone) and Susie Allan (piano) \nSome concerts feel less like performances and more like journeys — intimate\, poetic\, and deeply human. Love flows as the brook flows…is a song recital shaped around one of the great narratives of the Romantic imagination: Schubert’s Die schöne Müllerin\, a cycle in which love\, longing\, nature\, and heartbreak flow together as irresistibly as the stream that guides the young miller on his path. \nIn this specially curated programme\, selected songs from Die schöne Müllerin are interwoven with song settings by British and Irish composers who\, across generations\, have returned to the same timeless themes: love discovered\, love idealised\, love lost\, and the natural world as mirrors to the inner life. The result is a recital that feels both unified and richly varied\, moving seamlessly between German Romanticism and the golden age of English song. \nFew singers are better suited to this repertoire than Roderick Williams OBE\, whose storytelling\, textual insight\, and warm baritone voice have made him one of the most admired singers of his generation. His appearances range from the world’s great opera houses and concert halls to landmark national occasions\, including the Last Night of the Proms and the Coronation of King Charles III. He is joined by the highly acclaimed pianist Susie Allan\, whose sensitivity and musicianship make her one of the finest collaborators in song today. \nAlongside Schubert\, the programme features songs by Butterworth\, Trimble\, Vaughan Williams\, Boyle\, Gurney\, Clarke\, Head\, Quilter\, Finzi\, Ireland\, Howells\, and Britten — composers who transform poetry into moments of extraordinary intimacy and beauty. \nSet in the glowing acoustic of the Chapel of Malvern College\, this is an evening for anyone who loves poetry\, nature\, and music that speaks directly to the heart. \nTickets\n£20 – available to book online

SUMMARY:The Sum of Many Parts (Great Malvern Festival of Singing)
DESCRIPTION:Featuring the Chorus of the Great Malvern Festival of Singing \nFew musical experiences are as overwhelming — or as quietly transformative — as hearing a great choir weave many independent voices into a single\, breathing whole. The Sum of Many Parts is a celebration of choral music at its most intricate\, spacious\, and luminous: works in which multiple vocal lines combine to create something far greater than the sum of their individual strands. \nPerformed by the Chorus of the Great Malvern Festival of Singing\, this one-hour programme brings together some of the most profound and beautiful works written for multi-part choir\, heard in the resonant and atmospheric setting of the Chapel of Malvern College. \nThe evening opens with Allegri’s Miserere\, whose soaring lines and haunting plainsong echoes have captivated listeners since the Sistine Chapel of the 17th century. Tallis’s monumental Spem in alium — written for forty independent voices — remains one of the supreme achievements of Renaissance polyphony\, its sound unfolding like an architectural miracle in music. \nRomantic warmth and intimacy come to the fore in Brahms’s Geistliches Lied and Rheinberger’s Abendlied\, both radiant expressions of faith\, tenderness\, and consolation. Biebl’s beloved Ave Maria layers simple chant with glowing choral harmony\, while Pearsall’s Lay a Garland spins an exquisite web of yearning and grief. \nRounding off the programme is Charles Wood’s Hail\, gladdening Light\, a work of noble sweep and luminous sonority that crowns the evening in sound. \nThis is choral music at its most generous\, immersive\, and transcendent — an hour to be surrounded by sound\, stillness\, and beauty. \nTickets\n£10 – available to book online

SUMMARY:The Sound of Music
DESCRIPTION:Our Star Theatre Company makes a much-anticipated return to Malvern Theatres with Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II‘s timeless classic The Sound of Music. This is their 5th community musical and follows their hugely successful and acclaimed productions in the Forum Theatre of Fiddler on the Roof (2024) and Evita (2025). \nThe final collaboration between Rodgers and Hammerstein was destined to become the world’s most beloved musical. In Austria\, 1938\, an exuberant young governess brings music and joy back to a broken family\, only to face danger and intrigue as the Nazis gain power. The inspirational story\, based on the memoir of Maria Augusta Trapp\, follows an ebullient postulate who serves as governess to the seven children of the imperious Captain von Trapp\, bringing music and joy to the household. But as the forces of Nazism take hold of Austria\, Maria and the entire von Trapp family must make a moral decision. \nShow times\nWednesday 5 August 2026\, 7pm\nThursday 6 August 2026\, 7pm\nFriday 7 August 2026\, 7pm\nSaturday 8 August 2026\, 2pm\nSaturday 8 August 2026\, 7pm
