SUMMARY:Elgar at the Asylum (Autumn in Malvern Festival)
DESCRIPTION:This remarkable new production allows audiences to experience the music and legacy of Sir Edward Elgar through a powerful and unexpected lens. \nElgar at the Asylum is a promenade performance that moves between multiple spaces at Malvern Theatres – cinema\, studio\, foyers and gallery – turning the whole complex into an immersive experience. It takes inspiration from Elgar’s early career as a composer\, when he was commissioned to write music for patients at the Worcester County Pauper and Lunatic Asylum\, later called Powick Hospital. This formative but often overlooked chapter becomes the starting point for a bold and moving reimagining. \nCreated by The Monday Night Club in collaboration with C&T and a host of artistic collaborators including Dancefest and Vamos Theatre\, the production places learning disabled artists at its centre. Their perspectives reshape Elgar’s story through performance\, music\, and contemporary storytelling\, exploring themes of identity\, care\, and creative voice. \nBuilt through an ambitious process of co-creation\, the work balances reverence with innovation. It honours the emotional depth of Elgar’s music while opening new interpretations of cultural heritage\, asking who has the right to tell these stories. Visually striking and emotionally resonant\, Elgar at the Asylum offers a special opportunity to experience a familiar figure anew. It is both a tribute and a provocation\, helping audiences to listen differently\, and to recognise the richness of voices too often unheard. \nSuitable for ages 15+: includes options for audiences to choose to access archival film footage and historical content from the asylum system. \nShow times\nSaturday 26 September 2026: 11.30am\, 12.15pm\, 1pm\nSunday 27 September 2026: 2pm\, 2.45pm\, 3.30pm \nTickets\n£5.60 (including booking fee) – available via the Malvern Theatres website

SUMMARY:Inspiring Elgar: The Composers Who Shaped a Genius - A Live Music Event
DESCRIPTION:This thoughtfully curated recital by renowned cellist Corinne Frost and distinguished pianist Clare Toomer delves into the rich musical landscape that helped mould Sir Edward Elgar’s own distinctive voice. Including works by Beethoven\, Dvořák\, Fauré\, Parry\, Purcell and Schumann — all composers whose craftsmanship\, lyricism\, and harmonic imagination Elgar held in high esteem — the selection offers a compelling window into the influences that resonated deeply with him throughout his life. \nThe performance will be enhanced by illuminating commentary from Richard Westwood-Brookes\, who will reflect on Elgar’s personal connection to these composers and the role they played in inspiring his musical development. \nShow times\nSunday 4 October 2026\, 11am\nSunday 4 October 2026\, 2pm \nTickets\n£15 (booking essential) – available to book on the National Trust website or by phoning 0344 249 1895 \nN.B. Admission charges for the venue apply.

SUMMARY:Britten’s Endgame (Autumn in Malvern Festival)
DESCRIPTION:Britten’s Endgame – a film by John Bridcut \nWriter and film-maker John Bridcut presents a documentary released in 2013 to mark the centenary of the birth of composer Benjamin Britten which explores Britten’s creativity in the face of death. Those closest to him watched anxiously as he raced to complete his final opera Death in Venice\, tackling an edgy subject which resonated with his own life. Britten’s eventual heart operation after years of stress and illness left him incapacitated and prematurely old and frail\, yet somehow he rediscovered his creative urge to compose two late masterpieces. \nNine years after Bridcut made his award-winning Britten’s Children\, this is a rich and poignant film about the final years of a surprisingly insecure composer and the impact of what Britten’s partner Peter Pears called ‘an evil opera’. \nThe film features specially filmed performances of Britten’s music by Sarah Connolly (mezzo-soprano)\, John Graham-Hall and Allan Clayton (tenors)\, Xavier Phillips (cello)\, the BBC Concert Orchestra conducted by Paul Kildea\, Schola Cantorum of Oxford conducted by James Burton\, and the Fitzwilliam String Quartet. \nRunning time: 1hr 59mins\nRelease date: 2013 \nTickets\n£8.50/£9.50 – available to book via the Malvern Theatres website
