SUMMARY:Human Rights: The Case for the Defence (Festival of Ideas)
DESCRIPTION:On International Women’s Day\, join two feminist icons\, Baroness Hale of Richmond and Baroness Chakrabarti\, as they discuss justice\, rights and free speech.\nAfter the devastation of the Second World War\, the international community came together to enshrine fundamental rights to refuge\, health\, education and living standards\, for privacy\, fair trials and free speech\, and outlawing torture\, slavery and discrimination. Their aim was greater global justice\, equality\, and peace. That settlement is now in danger\, attacked by opponents from across the political spectrum and populist and authoritarian movements worldwide. We are threatened by wars\, inequality\, new technologies and climate catastrophe\, and we need our human rights now more than ever. In her powerful\, accessible book\, Shami Chakrabarti\, lawyer\, parliamentarian and leading British human rights defender\, shows us why human rights are essential for our future. \nIn this session\, Brenda Hale and Shami Chakrabarti provide an indispensable guide to the law and logic underpinning human dignity and universal freedoms. They will engage both sceptics and supporters\, equipping believers in the battle of ideas and persuading doubters to think again. For human rights to survive\, they must be far better understood by everyone. \nSuitable for: age 12 years and up.

SUMMARY:The Future Ain’t What It Used To Be (Festival of Ideas)
DESCRIPTION:Mark Lewney delivers his amazing physics show – it’s about futurism and the physics of predicting the future\, in which Uncertainty plays a starring role. \nWhy aren’t astrologers rich? Surely\, the horoscope of a footballer would tell them how to win a game? The science of foretelling the future has changed dramatically over the centuries\, so how is it that we can predict some things\, such as total eclipses\, but not others? Guitar physicist\, Dr Mark Lewney\, presents ‘a history of the future’\, beginning with films such as 2001 Space Odyssey and Back To The Future 2. Mark will explain in understandable language what chaos theory and quantum physics are\, and how these mind-blowing theories prevent us from predicting everyday life. He will look at the evolution of science and technology and how\, with the development of supermaterials such as graphene\, our future may change completely. Even though we cannot be sure exactly what the future holds\, we do know that it is going to be very exciting when we get there! \n Suitable for: age 12 years and up

SUMMARY:Malvern Hills Literary Loop: Tolkien\, Lewis\, Darwin & Dickens
DESCRIPTION:Legendary fantasy authors JRR Tolkien and CS Lewis were frequent visitors to the Malvern Hills around the middle of the 20th century and the distinctive landscape may have inspired features of Middle Earth and Narnia\, like the Giant’s Cave from the Hobbit and the Victorian gas lamps from The Lion\, the Witch & the Wardrobe. \nA century earlier\, authors Charles Darwin and Charles Dickens visited Malvern for the Water Cure and most of the treatment centres and guest houses still remain. \nThe Malvern Hills Literary Loop starts at the Mr. Tumnus bench in Priory Park and heads up past Knotsford House where Dickens stayed to Lewis’s former school Cherbourg House before pausing at the Lewis Memorial in Rosebank Gardens and following the gas lamps up to St. Ann’s Well cafe. \nAfter admiring the views around North Hill\, the trail descends to Alexandra Rd where Lewis’s close friend & biographer George Sayers lived\, opposite the former home of composer Edward Elgar. \nThe loop then heads up past Montreal House where Darwin stayed during his daughter’s treatment and past Lewis & Tolkien’s favourite pub The Unicorn Inn before passing the Hobbit door and down to Malvern Priory to find Anne Darwin’s grave and potentially the original Narnian gas lamp. \nDates and booking\nThe walks are available on many dates\, often with the option of two start times on the same day. For more information\, including prices\, availability and to book. visit the Malvern Hills Literary Loop: Tolkien\, Lewis\, Darwin & Dickens page on Airbnb.

SUMMARY:Who Do You Really Think You Are? (Festival of Ideas)
DESCRIPTION:Join geneticist and broadcaster\, Adam Rutherford\, as he takes his genetics shears and history axe in hand and pollards\, prunes and chops down some of the (genealogy\, family and evolution) trees we take for granted\, and plants much better ones. \nThe tree of life is the most wondrous demonstration of evolution in all its magnificent splendour. Except it’s not a tree at all. Genealogy and family trees are the ties that bind us to our ancestors\, descendants and local history. They’re not trees either. And the story of human evolution is our species’s family tree: guess what? Also not a tree. The whole of life on Earth is a tangled bank\, and it can be guaranteed that in this talk you will discover your royal heritage. \nWarning: contains a small bit of maths.

SUMMARY:Monstrous Anger of the Guns (Malvern Festival of Ideas)
DESCRIPTION:We are seeing injustices caused by war and occupation unfold in real-time via social media\, and we are speaking out in our millions against these horrors. Yet\, from Gaza to Ukraine\, the bombs continue to fall. We must understand why this is happening if we are to end it. \nMonstrous Anger of the Guns lays bare the dark and deceitful world of the global arms trade\, which\, often funded in our name\, is a business that counts its profits in billions and its losses in human lives. Leading activists and campaigners connect the dots\, showing how notions of citizenship\, democracy and trust in governments are misguided\, and how we can fight back by building mass movements\, using direct action and legal justice to end the flow of weapons and the environmental and human devastation they bring. \nIn this session\, Jeremy Corbyn\, Founder of the Peace and Justice Project\, exposes the ‘market of death’ and tells the stories of a diverse range of inspiring campaigns from around the world opposing militarism and the arms trade that feeds it. \nSuitable for: All ages

SUMMARY:X Marks the Spot (Festival of Ideas)
DESCRIPTION:Unearthing the physical remains of our past is a quintessential human itch – seen in every society from the ancients through to today. But the stories behind archaeological exploration and discovery – what we seek when\, what we end up finding\, and what we then do with it – tell us as much about ourselves today as they do about the past. \nThrough sensational stories of discovery\, Professor Michael Scott explores the evolution of modern archaeology from colonial expeditions to today’s cutting-edge science\, revealing traps\, curses and buried treasure along the way. We uncover why different periods and places have caught our attention and imaginations at different points in history. We meet the characters\, some celebrated and some forgotten\, who made world-famous discoveries like the Rosetta Stone\, the Terracotta Warriors and Machu Picchu. We consider ancient human footprints\, astounding shipwrecks\, mythical princesses and surprising rituals as insights into the wonders of past civilisations. And we explore how archaeological discoveries have often become emblems of modern fascinations and dilemmas.

SUMMARY:On Voice and the Feeling of Truth (Malvern Festival of Ideas)
DESCRIPTION:Join novelist\, poet and playwright Owen Sheers as he concludes our weekend with readings and conversation around his attempts to move beyond a partial truth through engaging with ideas of hybridity\, lyricism and voice. \nIn this final session of the 2025 event\, Professor Owen Sheers will read from three of his recent works\, the verse-drama Pink Mist and the BBC film-poems The Green Hollow and To Provide All People. His reading will be interspersed with conversation about the creative processes involved in creating these works\, all three of which engage with ideas of hybridity\, lyricism and voice to try and move beyond a partial ‘knowing’ of the truth towards a fuller ‘feeling’ of it. Blending documentary and poetic devices\, Owen uses the voices of characters informed by multiple interviews to create communal works that address such subjects as the aftermath of conflict\, the Aberfan disaster\, and the NHS. The nature of such subjects is that the truth of individual experience at their core is often anonymised in more general public narratives. By shaping his writing around composite characters\, many voices and alternating perspectives\, Owen is able to write in counterflow to this anonymisation\, engaging rhythm\, rhyme and imagery to create a strangely intimate lyrical distance through which the gap between a reader and the experiences they are reading is\, paradoxically\, narrowed to great emotional effect. \nSuitable for: 12 years and up

SUMMARY:Talk: Laura Knight's Theatre - Performance\, People and Place
DESCRIPTION:The Dame Laura Knight Society presents an illustrated talk by Professor Emeritus Claire Cochrane. \nLaura Knight’s extraordinarily capacious concept of theatre led to the creation of art that tried to capture not only the diversity of different forms of performance\, but also the working environments of where and how performance is made. In exploring examples of that diversity\, this talk will also focus on the key personalities who were instrumental in giving Knight access — in particular Sir Barry Jackson\, her friend for over five decades and the founder of the Birmingham Repertory Company and the Malvern Festival. \nTickets: £7 (members) / £10 (non-members) on the door \nRefreshments will be available at the talk.
