DESCRIPTION:Legendary fantasy authors JRR Tolkien and CS Lewis were frequent visitors to the Malvern Hills around the middle of the 20th century and the distinctive landscape may have inspired features of Middle Earth and Narnia\, like the Giant’s Cave from the Hobbit and the Victorian gas lamps from The Lion\, the Witch & the Wardrobe. \nA century earlier\, authors Charles Darwin and Charles Dickens visited Malvern for the Water Cure and most of the treatment centres and guest houses still remain. \nThe Malvern Hills Literary Loop starts at the Mr. Tumnus bench in Priory Park and heads up past Knotsford House where Dickens stayed to Lewis’s former school Cherbourg House before pausing at the Lewis Memorial in Rosebank Gardens and following the gas lamps up to St. Ann’s Well cafe. \nAfter admiring the views around North Hill\, the trail descends to Alexandra Rd where Lewis’s close friend & biographer George Sayers lived\, opposite the former home of composer Edward Elgar. \nThe loop then heads up past Montreal House where Darwin stayed during his daughter’s treatment and past Lewis & Tolkien’s favourite pub The Unicorn Inn before passing the Hobbit door and down to Malvern Priory to find Anne Darwin’s grave and potentially the original Narnian gas lamp. \nDates and booking\nThe walks are available on many dates\, often with the option of two start times on the same day. DESCRIPTION:To celebrate GRL’s 10th anniversary\, we are delighted to be sponsoring Brian Nyanhongo\, a renowned Zimbabwean sculptor\, during August and September 2025. Each block features a unique stone sculpture from the prized ‘first generation’ of Zimbabwean stone sculptors\, with other examples held in collections such as the Guggenheim and the V&A. \nBrian Nyanhongo will share the stories behind the works\, exploring the fascinating culture\, myths\, legends\, and humanity that inspire them. SUMMARY:Guided Tours of Great Malvern Priory
DESCRIPTION:Come and explore the fascinating history and unique treasures of Great Malvern Priory from its Norman origins to the present day. Discover more about the glories of this architectural gem\, with its beautiful stained glass\, medieval tiles and misericords. \nThere are guided tours most Saturday mornings at 11am and occasionally at 2pm (or very occasionally at other times). Please check the Priory Church calendar to confirm that a tour is going ahead on the day of your visit. \nDonations are welcomed and all money from the tours goes towards the ongoing repairs and restoration of the Priory building and the medieval glass windows. \nIn addition to the scheduled Saturday tours\, groups tours are available by prior arrangement on any day between 9am and 5pm as long as the Priory is not being used for another event. For these tours\, a small charge of £5 per person is made. Please visit the Friends of Malvern Priory website for more information and booking details. \n

Discover more about the glories of this architectural gem\, with its beautiful stained glass\, medieval tiles and misericords. \nThere are guided tours most Saturday mornings at 11am and occasionally at 2pm (or very occasionally at other times). Please check the Priory Church calendar to confirm that a tour is going ahead on the day of your visit. \nDonations are welcomed and all money from the tours goes towards the ongoing repairs and restoration of the Priory building and the medieval glass windows. \nIn addition to the scheduled Saturday tours\, groups tours are available by prior arrangement on any day between 9am and 5pm as long as the Priory is not being used for another event. Hear how both the Court and the Estate are cared for so that they will be enjoyed by visitors and walkers for decades to come. \nFriday 13 June\, 7.30pm\nButterflies of the Malvern Hills\nLocal expert Mel Mason will show how butterflies are indicators of biodiversity and the health of our environment. Sadly\, we have lost seven local species over the last four decades\, but the reintroduction of the pearl-bordered fritillary is an exciting project to buck this trend. Discover also how butterflies link with Sir Edward Elgar and his close friend the architect Arthur Troyte Griffith. \nFriday 11 July\, 7.30pm\nFlorence Nightingale in Malvern\nLocal historian Cora Weaver\, who has written and lectured extensively on Florence Nightingale and the Malvern Water Cure\, will detail how the founder of modern nursing regarded Malvern as her hospital town. When Nightingale required medical assistance she came to Malvern\, visiting nine times. This talk provides a chance to find out the truth about the Lady with the Lamp\, how ill she really was and why. There’s more to this story than you might imagine! \nFriday 8 August\, 7.30pm\nThe Police & Crime Commissioner for West Mercia\nJohn Campion (PCC West Mercia) will outline his role in this position and what police do in the area. \nFriday 12 September\, 7.30pm\nMalvern Rocks: The History of Quarrying in Malvern\nThose members and visitors who have moved to the Malvern area since the ’70s and ’80s will have known little of the effect of quarrying on the town and the hills. This impacts included the dangers\, the noise\, the turmoil and the scarring of the hills. Elaine Tomlinson’s talk will be your chance to find out about the geology of the rocks\, how they were exploited by industry and what it took to preserve the hills for future generations to enjoy. \nFriday 10 October\, 7.30pm\nNeedle Making in Worcestershire and Warwickshire\nRichard Churchly will discuss the start of the local needle trade around 1640 and explain how it developed from a tiny cottage industry into a significant force in the Redditch area. By 1900\, it employed tens of thousands of people\, whose labour produced all types of needles for export all around the globe. \nFriday 14 November\, 7.30pm\nThe King’s Thirds\nGeorge Demidowicz will tell the story of how a cash-strapped King Charles I attempted to raise revenue by exploiting the rights he enjoyed over the Royal Forests or Chases such that found in and around Malvern. These he shared with the neighbouring lords. The arrangement was that he gave up his rights over the “venison and vert” across the Chase on the basis that he would be allowed to enclose a third of the area. This\, the “King’s Thirds”\, could then be leased or sold to raise revenue.

SUMMARY:St Mary's Church\, Ripple: Grade I Listed & Rippling with Life (Heritage Open Days)
DESCRIPTION:Discover St Mary’s Church\, Ripple\, a Grade I- listed 12th century church set in an historic parish. Tours of the church and bell tower are on offer\, along with the chance to see 15th century carved misericords\, a rare ‘She’ Bible\, Sealed Knot Society Civil War display\, the Ripple Giant and more. \nSt Mary’s Church\, Ripple is the largest medieval church in the county of Worcestershire. It’s home to one of Britain’s best collections of misericords – 16 intricately carved seats from the 15th century. St Mary’s also boasts a rare 1613 ‘She’ Bible\, with other known copies in Exeter\, Salisbury and Durham Cathedrals and at Oxford and Cambridge. Other notable features include early Victorian Chamberlain tiles\, six bells by John Rudhall from 1807\, and a Victorian stained glass window by Ernest Heasman\, a pupil of Kempe. The grave of Robert Reeve\, The Ripple Giant\, bears the epitaph ‘As you pass by behold my length but never glory in your strength’\, the meaning of which will be explained to visitors. \nAs well as taking a tour of this Grade I-listed building\, Heritage Open Days visitors will have the chance to interact with members of the Sealed Knot Society\, the UK’s oldest English Civil War re-enactment society\, which has St Mary’s as its ‘home’ church. Come and see how St Mary’s Church\, Ripple is ‘rippling’ with life and how we plan to use architecture to bring this historic building up to date. \nVisit for Heritage Open Days between 10am and 4pm on Saturday 13 and Sunday 14 September 2025.

DESCRIPTION:Legendary fantasy authors JRR Tolkien and CS Lewis were frequent visitors to the Malvern Hills around the middle of the 20th century and the distinctive landscape may have inspired features of Middle Earth and Narnia\, like the Giant’s Cave from the Hobbit and the Victorian gas lamps from The Lion\, the Witch & the Wardrobe. \nA century earlier\, authors Charles Darwin and Charles Dickens visited Malvern for the Water Cure and most of the treatment centres and guest houses still remain. \nThe Malvern Hills Literary Loop starts at the Mr. Tumnus bench in Priory Park and heads up past Knotsford House where Dickens stayed to Lewis’s former school Cherbourg House before pausing at the Lewis Memorial in Rosebank Gardens and following the gas lamps up to St. Ann’s Well cafe. \nAfter admiring the views around North Hill\, the trail descends to Alexandra Rd where Lewis’s close friend & biographer George Sayers lived\, opposite the former home of composer Edward Elgar. \nThe loop then heads up past Montreal House where Darwin stayed during his daughter’s treatment and past Lewis & Tolkien’s favourite pub The Unicorn Inn before passing the Hobbit door and down to Malvern Priory to find Anne Darwin’s grave and potentially the original Narnian gas lamp. \nDates and booking\nThe walks are available on many dates\, often with the option of two start times on the same day. The museum is ready to welcome Heritage Open Day visitors on both weekends of the event\, with guided walks departing at 11.30am and 2pm for a fascinating and informative one-hour tour of the town (level terrain\, no hills). The guides will cover key historical features around the town\, the Battle of Upton in 1651\, the role that the river played in influencing trade\, the floods\, celebrated personalities and much more. \nThen you are welcome to return and explore the eclectic delights of the Tudor House Museum and sit in the beautiful\, tranquil garden\, all lovingly cared for by a committed team of volunteers. There is a vast collection of local history\, vintage pastimes and professions\, themed displays and wonderful collections of old photographs\, lace\, glassware and Staffordshire Blue pottery to name just a few\, spread around three floors – something for everyone of all ages. \nThe museum ground floor and garden are accessible for wheelchair users and there is an RNID hearing loop system in the reception area and large magnifying sheets available to read labels. Families will enjoy the mouse trail and craft table. Our lovely volunteers look forward to meeting you. DESCRIPTION:Legendary fantasy authors JRR Tolkien and CS Lewis were frequent visitors to the Malvern Hills around the middle of the 20th century and the distinctive landscape may have inspired features of Middle Earth and Narnia\, like the Giant’s Cave from the Hobbit and the Victorian gas lamps from The Lion\, the Witch & the Wardrobe. \nA century earlier\, authors Charles Darwin and Charles Dickens visited Malvern for the Water Cure and most of the treatment centres and guest houses still remain. \nThe Malvern Hills Literary Loop starts at the Mr. Tumnus bench in Priory Park and heads up past Knotsford House where Dickens stayed to Lewis’s former school Cherbourg House before pausing at the Lewis Memorial in Rosebank Gardens and following the gas lamps up to St. Ann’s Well cafe. \nAfter admiring the views around North Hill\, the trail descends to Alexandra Rd where Lewis’s close friend & biographer George Sayers lived\, opposite the former home of composer Edward Elgar. \nThe loop then heads up past Montreal House where Darwin stayed during his daughter’s treatment and past Lewis & Tolkien’s favourite pub The Unicorn Inn before passing the Hobbit door and down to Malvern Priory to find Anne Darwin’s grave and potentially the original Narnian gas lamp. \nDates and booking\nThe walks are available on many dates\, often with the option of two start times on the same day. SUMMARY:Discover Pendock Old Church (Heritage Open Days)
DESCRIPTION:Enjoy the beautiful architecture of this Grade I-listed church\, including its lovely tower\, original Jacobean pews\, fine chancel arch and an intriguing ‘stepway’ to Heaven? \nVolunteers will be on hand between 2pm and 5pm to show you around and help you pinpoint the special features that make this charming little church such a gem. \nPendock Church is a local landmark\, seen standing proud above the M50 motorway to Ross-on-Wye. Earthworks in fields to the north of the church indicate the site of a medieval village and probably the de Pendocks’ manor house. \nMuch of this charming church is Norman\, but the tenth-century font indicates an even earlier building; in the fourteenth century new windows were added\, and the west tower was constructed. There are lovely sixteenth-century pews and Jacobean communion rails. It is thought that the great English composer Sir Edward Elgar\, who was born not many miles away\, may once have played the lovely little Georgian organ inside. \nPlease park carefully on the lane or drive up the track to park nearer the church.
