SUMMARY:Tea with Philippa Langley (Midsummer Malvern)
DESCRIPTION:An informal chat about Edward V and his association with the Priory. \nThe glazing of the east window of Little Malvern Priory is an outstanding monument of English late medieval glass painting in both its imagery and craftsmanship. Depicted are the family of Edward IV and Elizabeth Woodville\, including the future Edward V\, one of the Princes in the Tower. Together with the ‘Royal’ window in Canterbury Cathedral\, the Little Malvern glass is the only surviving monumental representation of the key Yorkist personalities in English 15th century history. The patron\, Bishop William Alcock\, was Chancellor of England and president of the royal council\, so the window can be located in the highest circles. The glass is rich in colour and exhibits a standard or technical virtuosity appropriate for its regal subject matter. It represents the top level of English glass-painting. The window can be firmly dated (itself a rarity) to 1480-82 and it is by a Malvern workshop headed by Richard Twygge and Thomas Woodshawe\, which executed some of the most important glazing commissions carried out in the 1480s and the early 16th century\, including the Great Malvern ‘Magnificat’ window\, Tattershall College (Lincolnshire) and Westminster Abbey nave. \nTickets available from Little Malvern Priory. \nImage © Kate Wrigglesworth

SUMMARY:Philippa Langley – The Lost Princes (Midsummer Malvern)
DESCRIPTION:Part of Midsummer Malvern 2025 \nPhilippa Langley first took the world by storm with her discovery of the grave of King Richard III (1452 – 1485) in a car park in Leicester in 2012. The rediscovery and reburial of the last Plantagenet was watched by a global audience estimated at over 366 million. Now\, she has turned her attention to the fate of the Princes in the Tower – a mystery that has fascinated and divided opinion for over 500 years – with her new book that shows how history’s greatest cold case was solved. \nImage copyright: Kate Wrigglesworth

SUMMARY:Rebuilding Southern Iraq: Britain's Ultimate Failure - Talk by Tim Kidwell OBE (Midsummer Malvern)
DESCRIPTION:In 2003\, after the second Gulf War\, the Allies sought to rebuild Iraq. The British army (with the Italians and Japanese)\, in the south\, was initially welcomed by the population. However\, as it became clear that the Allies were unable to restore the essential infrastructure services\, that welcome waned and security became more of an issue\, forcing the eventual British withdrawal. This talk will explore what happened and why. \nTickets: £10 plus booking fee – in aid of SSAFA – available online at Ticketsource \nImage © Kate Wrigglesworth

SUMMARY:Malvern Hills Literary Loop: Tolkien\, Lewis\, Darwin & Dickens
DESCRIPTION:Legendary fantasy authors JRR Tolkien and CS Lewis were frequent visitors to the Malvern Hills around the middle of the 20th century and the distinctive landscape may have inspired features of Middle Earth and Narnia\, like the Giant’s Cave from the Hobbit and the Victorian gas lamps from The Lion\, the Witch & the Wardrobe. \nA century earlier\, authors Charles Darwin and Charles Dickens visited Malvern for the Water Cure and most of the treatment centres and guest houses still remain. \nThe Malvern Hills Literary Loop starts at the Mr. Tumnus bench in Priory Park and heads up past Knotsford House where Dickens stayed to Lewis’s former school Cherbourg House before pausing at the Lewis Memorial in Rosebank Gardens and following the gas lamps up to St. Ann’s Well cafe. \nAfter admiring the views around North Hill\, the trail descends to Alexandra Rd where Lewis’s close friend & biographer George Sayers lived\, opposite the former home of composer Edward Elgar. \nThe loop then heads up past Montreal House where Darwin stayed during his daughter’s treatment and past Lewis & Tolkien’s favourite pub The Unicorn Inn before passing the Hobbit door and down to Malvern Priory to find Anne Darwin’s grave and potentially the original Narnian gas lamp. \nDates and booking\nThe walks are available on many dates\, often with the option of two start times on the same day.
