DESCRIPTION:Free entry \nMany of the songs Cate choose to put her stamp on belong to that great age of song sophistication\, coming from the pen of the masters of the ‘jazz age’. She does full justice to them\, their melodies caressing\, lyrics expressing\, reflecting on their subtleties and breathing new life into them. Cate is delighted to be accompanied by Dave Green (bass) and Dave Newton (piano). Growing up in Renfrewshire\, Scotland\, Newton had a musical upbringing with the piano trio sound of Peterson\, Tatum or Garner an ever-present feature in the Newton household. After graduating from Leeds College of Music in 1979 and working in the north of thecountry for a while\, he moved to London where he rapidly became a much sought after pianist teaming up with Alan Barnes\, guitarist Martin Taylor and saxophonist Don Weller. He has worked regularly with Carol Kidd\, Marion Montgomery\, Tina May\, Annie Ross\, Claire Martin and of course Stacey Kent. David Newton was voted best Jazz Pianist in the British Jazz awards for the thirteenth time in 2014 and was made a Fellow of Leeds College of Music in 2003.

SUMMARY:Rico’s Littlest Big Band  with Cia Tomasso (Upton Jazz Festival)
DESCRIPTION:Entry by wristband \nEnrico Tomasso is considered one of the top jazz trumpeters on the jazz scene and six times winner of best trumpet category in the British Jazz Awards. He playsthe top festivals and jazz clubs around the world\, having an exciting presence and dynamic personality on stage. His command of the instrument and broad stylistic ability place him in demand in the recording world. He met and was mentored by Louis Armstrong as a child and met and played with many more of the ‘Jazz Maestros’ on his journey. \nCia Tomasso steered her education towards music and jazz during secondary school and started sitting in with informal jazz sessions at 15. Her influence is from a really wide spectrum of listening which has resulted in a unique style\, singing with a joyful and relaxed feeling. Rico’s Littlest Big Band is a play on the description of The John Kirby Band of the late 30’s\, ‘The Biggest Little Band’. Rico has been playing these wonderful transcriptions for many years but now includes the vocal arrangements in the same engaging style as a showcase for Cia Tomasso’s wonderful interpretations. \nRobert Fowler and Trevor Whiting take on the clarinet and sax duties whilst the swinging rhythm section is Colin Good\, John Sutton and Jerome Davies.

Rooted in the bebop & swing traditions\, her powerful\, melodic playing draws inspiration from the likes of Phil Woods\, Sonny Stitt & Cannonball Adderley. Alex has performed with notable names such as Alan Barnes\, Bruce Adams & Mark Nightingale and regularly works with top ensembles including The Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Orchestra. Leading her own quartet featuring some of the UK’s finest musicians\, namely Dave Newton (piano)\, Dave Green (bass) and Steve Brown (drums)\, she released her latest album ‘Only A Year’ in 2022. For this afternoon’s performance\, Alex’s quartet will be exploring the music of Cole Porter\, performing innovative arrangements of his repertoire from the 1930s and 40s and featuring iconic songs from his most loved musicals such as Kiss Me Kate\, Jubilee & Anything Goes.

DESCRIPTION:Free entry \nFiddleBop plays Gypsy jazz in the band’s own highly distinctive style\, with a notable fondness for vocals\, both solo and harmonised. And — like the first Gypsy jazz bands — FiddleBop’s repertoire is eclectic. Expect Gypsy-flavoured jazz drawn from pretty much all of the genre’s century-long history: get-up-and-dance jazz from the 1920s\, 1930s chilli-hot swing\, cool post-bop\, jazz-flavoured classic pop\, folk-jazz\, and the band’s own creations. All played and sung with Gypsy zing and passion. Based in mid-Wales since 2017\, the current line-up of FiddleBop features Jo Davies on Spanish guitar and vocals. She’s the rhythmic foundation of FiddleBop. Dave Favis-Mortlock features on violin and vocals\, Paul Stevens is FiddleBop’s keyboard whiz: rhythmic\, blues-soaked\, and soulful and Graeme Lamble is FiddleBop’s fretless bassist extraordinaire.

The inclusion of Tom ‘Spats’ Langham’s guitar and vocals in this 30’s freewheeling swing setting just adds to the variety. Of course\, you also have Rico’s great trumpet and vocals and the wonderful Trevor Whiting on clarinet and sax and to complete the perfect stylistic rhythm\, Nick Ward and Malcolm Sked on drums and bass.

Exploring a unique sound between a small group and a big band\, they mix dynamic arrangements with melodic improvisation. Featuring some of the best musicians from across the region\, West Coast Sound is led by Robin Miller (trumpet) with Pete Johnson (trombone)\, Maks Dmytruk\, Peter Hopcroft and Marie McNally (saxophones) and a driving rhythm section of Kate Hill (piano)\, Max Davison (bass) and Jake Terry (drums). \n3.45pm – 4.45pm: James Chadwick Trio\nJames Chadwick is both a subtle and versatile guitarist and a distinctive musician and composer\, well known around Cardiff and across South Wales. With Aidan Thorne on Bass and Ian Williams on drums the band will play material from the J4 set – Sounds of the 60s with a Jazz Twist. DESCRIPTION:Entry by wristband \nThe Sunshine Kings are led by Graham Hughes on the trombone and vocals (with the odd feature on chromatic harmonica by request!). Graham works with many of the most respected jazz musicians in the UK and often appears as a featured guest at festivals. He formed The Sunshine Kings for an appearance at a jazz club in London in 2009\, choosing a group of musicians from around London who were at the time little known on the traditional jazz scene. Graham has transcribed versions of interesting songs played by bands of the 1920s and 30s\, written his own arrangements of popular numbers\, and even composed one or two original numbers of his own for the band. Variety is the spice of life\, and The Sunshine Kings takes this mantra on board with their performances\, filling the music with freshness and fun.

He is best known for his work on clarinet\, alto and baritone sax\, where he combines a formidable virtuosity with a musical expression and collaborative spirit that have few peers. Alan Barnes’s unique musicianship\, indefatigable touring\, and warm rapport with audiences have made him uniquely popular in British jazz. A multiple award winner\, Bruce Adams has shared the stage with such luminaries as Dick Hymn\, Benny Carter\, Al Cohn\, Kenny Davern\, Bob Wilber\, Bill and John Allred\, Dave McKenna\, Buddy Tate and Ray Bryant to name but a few. Bruce has often worked as a special guest soloist with both the Scottish Radio Orchestra and the BBC Big Band. Craig Milverton is one of Britain’s finest Jazz Pianists and this was recognised in 2010 by winning Best Jazz Pianist in the British Jazz Awards. His trio is often used to back a host of top names at clubs and festivals across Europe. Artists include Stacey Kent\, Jacqui Dankworth and Scott Hamilton. He works regularly with Digby Fairweather and his Half Dozen and was accompanist to Blues Singer George Melly with whom he recorded 3 CDs one of which featured Van Morrison. He has toured and performed at top venues and festivals across the globe. His trio features the amazing virtuoso on bass Tom Clarke-Hill and Nick Millward\, one of the finest drummers in the UK.

Hot Banana have an exuberant and visual stage presence\, an infectious feel-good humour and dazzling musicianship which have helped Hot Banana to establish in a very short time\, the glowing reputation it enjoys whenever they perform. The band’s ensemble is made up of experienced musicians and soloists\, who pride themselves in the knowledge that a full entertainment package is theirs to deliver. On trumpet\, trombone and vocals is Kevin Grenfell\, with Rich Hughes on piano\, Simon Smith on bass\, Steve Street on drums\, and Howard Gregory on guitar.
