DESCRIPTION:Legendary fantasy authors JRR Tolkien and CS Lewis were frequent visitors to the Malvern Hills around the middle of the 20th century and the distinctive landscape may have inspired features of Middle Earth and Narnia\, like the Giant’s Cave from the Hobbit and the Victorian gas lamps from The Lion\, the Witch & the Wardrobe. \nA century earlier\, authors Charles Darwin and Charles Dickens visited Malvern for the Water Cure and most of the treatment centres and guest houses still remain. \nThe Malvern Hills Literary Loop starts at the Mr. Tumnus bench in Priory Park and heads up past Knotsford House where Dickens stayed to Lewis’s former school Cherbourg House before pausing at the Lewis Memorial in Rosebank Gardens and following the gas lamps up to St. Ann’s Well cafe. \nAfter admiring the views around North Hill\, the trail descends to Alexandra Rd where Lewis’s close friend & biographer George Sayers lived\, opposite the former home of composer Edward Elgar. \nThe loop then heads up past Montreal House where Darwin stayed during his daughter’s treatment and past Lewis & Tolkien’s favourite pub The Unicorn Inn before passing the Hobbit door and down to Malvern Priory to find Anne Darwin’s grave and potentially the original Narnian gas lamp. \nDates and booking\nThe walks are available on many dates\, often with the option of two start times on the same day. Children under 14 and vulnerable adults should be accompanied by an appropriate adult. If you are under 14 or the carer of a vulnerable adult\, there is no charge. \nSorry – no dogs are allowed\, except assistance dogs. \nWalks are led by enthusiastic and knowledgeable guides from Malvern Civic Society. \nDates and times\nWalks run every Monday (including Bank Holidays) and Saturday at 10.30am from 5 April until 27 October 2025. \nPlease note – the following dates are fully booked: 2 June 2025\, 4 October 2025 \nBooking\nPlease book in advance to avoid disappointment. We are back for another year with the Mayor’s Peak Challenge in aid of Cube Youth. \nThis year join us on 3 May\, when you will be able to walk either a long walk of 18km or a shorter walk of 9km with all walkers receiving a t-shirt and medal. \nWe also welcome dogs on the walk\, and all dogs will receive a rosette and dog treat bag for completing the walk. \nIf walking isn’t your thing\, come down to Priory Park\, where you can welcome back the walkers\, take part in fun activities\, and enjoy live entertainment. \nEvent details\nLong Walk: Meet at Priory Park at 8am for registration\, with coaches leaving promptly at 8.30am. Walks start at 9am with all walkers being back at Priory Park by 5.30pm (after this time the finish line will no longer be manned).\nShort Walk: Meet at Priority Park at 10am for registration\, with coaches leaving promptly at 10:30am. Children under 14 and vulnerable adults should be accompanied by an appropriate adult. DESCRIPTION:Legendary fantasy authors JRR Tolkien and CS Lewis were frequent visitors to the Malvern Hills around the middle of the 20th century and the distinctive landscape may have inspired features of Middle Earth and Narnia\, like the Giant’s Cave from the Hobbit and the Victorian gas lamps from The Lion\, the Witch & the Wardrobe. \nA century earlier\, authors Charles Darwin and Charles Dickens visited Malvern for the Water Cure and most of the treatment centres and guest houses still remain. \nThe Malvern Hills Literary Loop starts at the Mr. Tumnus bench in Priory Park and heads up past Knotsford House where Dickens stayed to Lewis’s former school Cherbourg House before pausing at the Lewis Memorial in Rosebank Gardens and following the gas lamps up to St. Ann’s Well cafe. \nAfter admiring the views around North Hill\, the trail descends to Alexandra Rd where Lewis’s close friend & biographer George Sayers lived\, opposite the former home of composer Edward Elgar. \nThe loop then heads up past Montreal House where Darwin stayed during his daughter’s treatment and past Lewis & Tolkien’s favourite pub The Unicorn Inn before passing the Hobbit door and down to Malvern Priory to find Anne Darwin’s grave and potentially the original Narnian gas lamp. \nDates and booking\nThe walks are available on many dates\, often with the option of two start times on the same day. Children under 14 and vulnerable adults should be accompanied by an appropriate adult. If you are under 14 or the carer of a vulnerable adult\, there is no charge. \nSorry – no dogs are allowed\, except assistance dogs. \nWalks are led by enthusiastic and knowledgeable guides from Malvern Civic Society. \nDates and times\nWalks run every Monday (including Bank Holidays) and Saturday at 10.30am from 5 April until 27 October 2025. \nPlease note – the following dates are fully booked: 2 June 2025\, 4 October 2025 \nBooking\nPlease book in advance to avoid disappointment. Ten places are available on each walk: four are available to book through Malvern Tourist Information Centre either on 01684 892289 or in person; the other six are available to book online at Ticketsource (small booking fee applies to online transactions). Any tickets for Saturday unsold online by noon on Friday\, or tickets for Monday unsold online by 8am on Monday\, will become available to purchase through Malvern Tourist Information Centre during opening hours. SUMMARY:Hidden Trails on the Malvern Hills (Malvern Walking Festival)
DESCRIPTION:An exploration of routes off the beaten track\, on and around the Herefordshire Beacon and nearby hills. From historic Little Malvern Priory with its Benedictine heritage\, we follow the contour below the hill fort\, and climb to the ridge. After reaching Walm’s well\, which dates from the late Bronze age\, and was later revered by the water curists\, we continue below the west side of the ridge. The concluding part of this highly scenic route is to the north of the A449 road\, eventually reaching Wynd’s Point and down to the Priory. 3 stiles and up and down of 160m. \nGenerally easy but with a long incline and a few difficult short stretches towards the end.
