SUMMARY:Jeremy Bowen
DESCRIPTION:Gaza. Ukraine. Syria. Sudan. Yemen. The world is facing more armed conflicts than at any point in decades\, and Jeremy Bowen has reported from the centre of nearly all of them. \nAs the BBC‘s International Editor\, Jeremy has spent over four decades covering more than 90 countries and 20 wars. From El Salvador in 1989 to the frontlines today\, he has interviewed world leaders\, documented war crimes\, been shot at\, and survived to tell the stories. \nBut something has changed. Israel imposes restrictions on foreign journalists from entering Gaza. Russia controls the narrative in occupied Ukraine. Governments from Syria to Sudan restrict access\, manipulate information\, and discredit reporters who contradict official accounts. In the age of social media\, competing claims flood our screens\, but who is telling the truth? And how do we know? \nJeremy has spent his career fighting for access\, verifying what others want hidden\, and bearing witness when governments would rather the world look away. He will explain how the battle for truth is being waged\, why press freedom is collapsing in conflict zones\, and what it means when the first casualty of war is not just truth\, but those trying to report it. \nIn the second half\, audiences will have the chance to put their questions to a journalist who has made it his life’s work to get as close to the truth as possible — even when that truth is dangerous\, disputed\, or under fire. \nAn essential evening for anyone who wants to understand the world as it is\, not as we wish it to be. \nShow times\nWednesday 30 September 2026: 2.30pm & 7.30pm \nTickets\nVarious prices – available to book via the Malvern Theatres website

SUMMARY:Meditation and Buddhism Class
DESCRIPTION:Join us at Adhisthana to meditate with others and develop your ability to work creatively with your mind. You can either learn to meditate from scratch and develop the foundations for a daily practice or join the regulars to build on what you know and discover how to apply yourself effectively in meditation. \nAs of December 2025\, classes are being held on Mondays from 7.30pm – 9.30pm and are open to participants of all levels of experience. Please note there is no class on 22 or 29 December 2025. \nYou are welcome to arrive 15 minutes before the start. You’ll be greeted at the entrance by someone who will direct you where to go and help you with any queries. \nThe class takes place in a room on the first floor and is\, as a consequence\, unfortunately not accessible. \nIn the first half of the session\, we meditate together; this is followed by a tea break. In the second half\, we learn about the teachings of the Buddha with the chance to engage in discussion and ask questions. \nThe class is led by a team of members of the Triratna Buddhist Order and those who are training for ordination. \nIf you would like more information\, you can call Adhisthana on 01531 641726 or email us (otherwise just turn up!).

SUMMARY:Great Malvern Heritage Walk
DESCRIPTION:About the walk\nDiscover the rich heritage of one of England’s most charming spa towns\, famed for its invigorating Water Cure. \nJoin one of Malvern Civic Society’s volunteer guides to trace the town’s evolution\, from a 19th century spa destination\, to its role in World War II as an important centre for secret radar development. Along the way\, explore Victorian architecture\, Great Malvern Priory\, connections to composer Edward Elgar\, and sites celebrated through Malvern’s many blue plaques\, commemorating notable residents and visitors. \nWhether you’re a first-time visitor or a lifelong resident\, you’ll leave with a deeper appreciation for Malvern’s cultural and historical legacy. \nDates and times\nThe 90-minute tours operate every Saturday and Monday from April 2026 to October 2026\, except 13 July and 12 September\, starting at 10.30am from Malvern Tourist Information Centre on Church Street (contact: 01684 892289). \nAll walks are subject to guide availability. \nTickets\nThe cost is £7 for adults; 14 – 16 year olds go free. \nTickets are available online via TicketSource or at the Malvern Tourist Information Centre. If Ticketsource shows ‘sold out’\, more tickets may be available. \nPlease book in advance to avoid disappointment. Ten places are available on each walk: four are available to book through Malvern Tourist Information Centre either in person or on 01684 892289; the other six are available to book online at Ticketsource (small booking fee applies online). Any tickets for a Saturday walk unsold online by noon on Friday\, or tickets for a Monday walk unsold online by 8am on Monday\, will become available to purchase through Malvern Tourist Information Centre during opening hours. Please note tickets for 14 – 16 year olds can be booked only through Malvern Tourist Information Centre (not online) \nPrivate group walks may be available – enquire directly to the TIC. \nAccessibility\nDue to the content of the tours and the hilly nature of Malvern\, these walks are not suitable for children under 14 years\, nor for anyone with mobility issues. \nDogs\nSorry – no dogs are allowed\, except assistance dogs. \nAlternative tour\nIn addition to the standard tour described above\, some guides offer a specialist tour\, by arrangement\, for those with a particular interest in the arts: “The Culture and The Cure”. This walk\, for pre-booked groups only (minimum group size may apply)\, explores Malvern’s cultural connections alongside the history of the town as a centre for the controversial Water Cure. Writers\, artists and musicians have been attracted to Malvern for over a hundred years – hear their stories plus how this small Worcestershire town became a major spa. For more details regarding this bespoke tour\, please contact the Malvern Tourist Information Centre in the first instance. \nReviews\nRead the many five-star reviews on the Trip Advisor page for Great Malvern Heritage Walks.

SUMMARY:Elgar at the Asylum (Autumn in Malvern Festival)
DESCRIPTION:This remarkable new production allows audiences to experience the music and legacy of Sir Edward Elgar through a powerful and unexpected lens. \nElgar at the Asylum is a promenade performance that moves between multiple spaces at Malvern Theatres – cinema\, studio\, foyers and gallery – turning the whole complex into an immersive experience. It takes inspiration from Elgar’s early career as a composer\, when he was commissioned to write music for patients at the Worcester County Pauper and Lunatic Asylum\, later called Powick Hospital. This formative but often overlooked chapter becomes the starting point for a bold and moving reimagining. \nCreated by The Monday Night Club in collaboration with C&T and a host of artistic collaborators including Dancefest and Vamos Theatre\, the production places learning disabled artists at its centre. Their perspectives reshape Elgar’s story through performance\, music\, and contemporary storytelling\, exploring themes of identity\, care\, and creative voice. \nBuilt through an ambitious process of co-creation\, the work balances reverence with innovation. It honours the emotional depth of Elgar’s music while opening new interpretations of cultural heritage\, asking who has the right to tell these stories. Visually striking and emotionally resonant\, Elgar at the Asylum offers a special opportunity to experience a familiar figure anew. It is both a tribute and a provocation\, helping audiences to listen differently\, and to recognise the richness of voices too often unheard. \nSuitable for ages 15+: includes options for audiences to choose to access archival film footage and historical content from the asylum system. \nShow times\nSaturday 26 September 2026: 11.30am\, 12.15pm\, 1pm\nSunday 27 September 2026: 2pm\, 2.45pm\, 3.30pm \nTickets\n£5.60 (including booking fee) – available via the Malvern Theatres website

DESCRIPTION:Legendary fantasy authors JRR Tolkien and CS Lewis were frequent visitors to the Malvern Hills around the middle of the 20th century and the distinctive landscape may have inspired features of Middle Earth and Narnia\, like the Giant’s Cave from The Hobbit and the Victorian gas lamps from The Lion\, the Witch & the Wardrobe. \nA century earlier\, authors Charles Darwin and Charles Dickens visited Malvern for the Water Cure and most of the treatment centres and guest houses still remain. \nThe Malvern Hills Literary Loop starts at the Mr. Tumnus bench in Priory Park and heads up past Knotsford House where Dickens stayed to Lewis’s former school Cherbourg House before pausing at the Lewis Memorial in Rosebank Gardens and following the gas lamps up to St. Ann’s Well cafe. \nAfter admiring the views around North Hill\, the trail descends to Alexandra Rd where Lewis’s close friend & biographer George Sayer lived\, opposite the former home of composer Edward Elgar. \nThe loop then heads up past Montreal House where Darwin stayed during his daughter’s treatment and past Lewis & Tolkien’s favourite pub The Unicorn Inn before passing the Hobbit door and down to Malvern Priory to find Anne Darwin’s grave and potentially the original Narnian gas lamp. \nDates and booking\nThe walks are available on many dates\, often with the option of two start times on the same day.
