SUMMARY:Wreckless Eric
DESCRIPTION:Greenwood Events and Off The Road Music present the legendary Wreckless Eric at West Malvern Social Club this June. \nWreckless needs little introduction – he wrote and recorded the classic Whole Wide World and had a hit with it back in 1977. In the years since then\, it has been a hit for countless other musicians including The Monkees\, Cage The Elephant and Billie Joe Armstrong of Green Day\, featured in the 2022 Expedia / Superbowl / Ewan MacGregor travel ad\, and most recently in the podcast Smartless. \nEric’s three most recent albums – Construction Time & Demolition\, Transience and Leisureland (all available online) – have been widely praised as his best work to date. His live performance is a sonic journey through time and space incorporating songs from all periods of his long career. Unmasked\, unhinged and still alive – a survivor of COVID-19 (resulting in a near-fatal heart attack)\, Eric presents himself alone if not simply with electric and acoustic guitars\, and electronics of his own making. \nTickets: £25 – available to book online

SUMMARY:Malvern Hills Literary Loop: Tolkien\, Lewis\, Darwin & Dickens
DESCRIPTION:Legendary fantasy authors JRR Tolkien and CS Lewis were frequent visitors to the Malvern Hills around the middle of the 20th century and the distinctive landscape may have inspired features of Middle Earth and Narnia\, like the Giant’s Cave from the Hobbit and the Victorian gas lamps from The Lion\, the Witch & the Wardrobe. \nA century earlier\, authors Charles Darwin and Charles Dickens visited Malvern for the Water Cure and most of the treatment centres and guest houses still remain. \nThe Malvern Hills Literary Loop starts at the Mr. Tumnus bench in Priory Park and heads up past Knotsford House where Dickens stayed to Lewis’s former school Cherbourg House before pausing at the Lewis Memorial in Rosebank Gardens and following the gas lamps up to St. Ann’s Well cafe. \nAfter admiring the views around North Hill\, the trail descends to Alexandra Rd where Lewis’s close friend & biographer George Sayers lived\, opposite the former home of composer Edward Elgar. \nThe loop then heads up past Montreal House where Darwin stayed during his daughter’s treatment and past Lewis & Tolkien’s favourite pub The Unicorn Inn before passing the Hobbit door and down to Malvern Priory to find Anne Darwin’s grave and potentially the original Narnian gas lamp. \nDates and booking\nThe walks are available on many dates\, often with the option of two start times on the same day. For more information\, including prices\, availability and to book. visit the Malvern Hills Literary Loop: Tolkien\, Lewis\, Darwin & Dickens page on Airbnb.

SUMMARY:Graham Hughes’ Sunshine Kings (Upton Jazz Festival)
DESCRIPTION:Entry by wristband \nThe Sunshine Kings are led by Graham Hughes on the trombone and vocals (with the odd feature on chromatic harmonica by request!). Graham works with many of the most respected jazz musicians in the UK and often appears as a featured guest at festivals. He formed The Sunshine Kings for an appearance at a jazz club in London in 2009\, choosing a group of musicians from around London who were at the time little known on the traditional jazz scene. Graham has transcribed versions of interesting songs played by bands of the 1920s and 30s\, written his own arrangements of popular numbers\, and even composed one or two original numbers of his own for the band. Variety is the spice of life\, and The Sunshine Kings takes this mantra on board with their performances\, filling the music with freshness and fun.
