DESCRIPTION:Legendary fantasy authors JRR Tolkien and CS Lewis were frequent visitors to the Malvern Hills around the middle of the 20th century and the distinctive landscape may have inspired features of Middle Earth and Narnia\, like the Giant’s Cave from the Hobbit and the Victorian gas lamps from The Lion\, the Witch & the Wardrobe. \nA century earlier\, authors Charles Darwin and Charles Dickens visited Malvern for the Water Cure and most of the treatment centres and guest houses still remain. \nThe Malvern Hills Literary Loop starts at the Mr. Tumnus bench in Priory Park and heads up past Knotsford House where Dickens stayed to Lewis’s former school Cherbourg House before pausing at the Lewis Memorial in Rosebank Gardens and following the gas lamps up to St. Ann’s Well cafe. \nAfter admiring the views around North Hill\, the trail descends to Alexandra Rd where Lewis’s close friend & biographer George Sayers lived\, opposite the former home of composer Edward Elgar. \nThe loop then heads up past Montreal House where Darwin stayed during his daughter’s treatment and past Lewis & Tolkien’s favourite pub The Unicorn Inn before passing the Hobbit door and down to Malvern Priory to find Anne Darwin’s grave and potentially the original Narnian gas lamp. \nDates and booking\nThe walks are available on many dates\, often with the option of two start times on the same day. Please check the Priory Church calendar to confirm that a tour is going ahead on the day of your visit. \nDonations are welcomed and all money from the tours goes towards the ongoing repairs and restoration of the Priory building and the medieval glass windows. \nIn addition to the scheduled Saturday tours\, groups tours are available by prior arrangement on any day between 9am and 5pm as long as the Priory is not being used for another event. The programme will open with John Ireland’s youthful String Quartet\, where the influences of Beethoven and Brahms can be heard but also the early emergence of a new musical voice. In the second half of the concert\, the Tippett Quartet will play one of the perennial glories of chamber music\, Schubert’s ‘Death and the Maiden’ Quartet\, a work of riveting drama which also finds room for the most affecting poetic utterance. DESCRIPTION:Legendary fantasy authors JRR Tolkien and CS Lewis were frequent visitors to the Malvern Hills around the middle of the 20th century and the distinctive landscape may have inspired features of Middle Earth and Narnia\, like the Giant’s Cave from the Hobbit and the Victorian gas lamps from The Lion\, the Witch & the Wardrobe. \nA century earlier\, authors Charles Darwin and Charles Dickens visited Malvern for the Water Cure and most of the treatment centres and guest houses still remain. \nThe Malvern Hills Literary Loop starts at the Mr. Tumnus bench in Priory Park and heads up past Knotsford House where Dickens stayed to Lewis’s former school Cherbourg House before pausing at the Lewis Memorial in Rosebank Gardens and following the gas lamps up to St. Ann’s Well cafe. \nAfter admiring the views around North Hill\, the trail descends to Alexandra Rd where Lewis’s close friend & biographer George Sayers lived\, opposite the former home of composer Edward Elgar. \nThe loop then heads up past Montreal House where Darwin stayed during his daughter’s treatment and past Lewis & Tolkien’s favourite pub The Unicorn Inn before passing the Hobbit door and down to Malvern Priory to find Anne Darwin’s grave and potentially the original Narnian gas lamp. \nDates and booking\nThe walks are available on many dates\, often with the option of two start times on the same day. DESCRIPTION:Begin your evening with a 20-minute stroll around Great Malvern town centre led by an experienced local guide\, uncovering the darker side of Malvern’s history. You will be escorted to the Theatre of Small Convenience\, converted from a Victorian public lavatory\, where you will experience a 30-minute immersive theatrical performance that combines history\, magic\, and storytelling to create a unique and unsettling seance led by Madam Sceptre. Expect dim lighting and a racing heart. \nPlease note – this event is not suitable for audiences under 18 years\, pregnant women or those with heart conditions (no exceptions). \nThe organisers reserve the right to refuse entry to anyone they believe to be intoxicated or impaired. Places are limited. Latecomers will not be admitted. \nAll attendees will be sent an email to inform them of the meeting point. \nCareena Fenton is PhD candidate at the University of Birmingham\, researching witchcraft and Victorian spiritualism; she is also a member of the Magic Circle.
