SUMMARY:Malvern Hills Literary Loop: Tolkien\, Lewis\, Darwin & Dickens
DESCRIPTION:Legendary fantasy authors JRR Tolkien and CS Lewis were frequent visitors to the Malvern Hills around the middle of the 20th century and the distinctive landscape may have inspired features of Middle Earth and Narnia\, like the Giant’s Cave from the Hobbit and the Victorian gas lamps from The Lion\, the Witch & the Wardrobe. \nA century earlier\, authors Charles Darwin and Charles Dickens visited Malvern for the Water Cure and most of the treatment centres and guest houses still remain. \nThe Malvern Hills Literary Loop starts at the Mr. Tumnus bench in Priory Park and heads up past Knotsford House where Dickens stayed to Lewis’s former school Cherbourg House before pausing at the Lewis Memorial in Rosebank Gardens and following the gas lamps up to St. Ann’s Well cafe. \nAfter admiring the views around North Hill\, the trail descends to Alexandra Rd where Lewis’s close friend & biographer George Sayers lived\, opposite the former home of composer Edward Elgar. \nThe loop then heads up past Montreal House where Darwin stayed during his daughter’s treatment and past Lewis & Tolkien’s favourite pub The Unicorn Inn before passing the Hobbit door and down to Malvern Priory to find Anne Darwin’s grave and potentially the original Narnian gas lamp. \nDates and booking\nThe walks are available on many dates\, often with the option of two start times on the same day. For more information\, including prices\, availability and to book. visit the Malvern Hills Literary Loop: Tolkien\, Lewis\, Darwin & Dickens page on Airbnb.

SUMMARY:Tippett Quartet
DESCRIPTION:Hellens is thrilled to host this superb string quartet for a concert in the Great Barn. \nMusicians\nJohn Mills violin\nJeremy Isaac violin\nLydia Lowndes-Northcott viola\nBozidar Vukotic cello \nProgramme\nJohn Ireland String Quartet No 1 in D minor\nIan Venables String Quartet Op 32\nSchubert String Quartet in D minor D810 ‘Death and the Maiden’ \nIn this concert\, as part of the musical celebrations to mark the 70th birthday year of the highly acclaimed composer Ian Venables\, the outstanding Tippett Quartet will be performing Venables’ String Quartet\, a compact and most arresting work of melodic richness\, harmonic incident\, varied intensity and very real beauty. In the second half of the concert\, the Tippett Quartet will play one of the perennial glories of chamber music\, Schubert’s ‘Death and the Maiden’ Quartet\, a work of riveting drama which also finds room for the most affecting poetic utterance. Ian Venables lives in Worcester and is a valued Trustee of Hellensmusic. \nThe Haywain bar and doors open 30 minutes prior to the performance. \nTickets: £20 (students and carers free) – available to book online via the Hellens website

SUMMARY:Mr Vast (FEAST)
DESCRIPTION:Mr Vast – aka Henry Sargeant – trained as an actor and ‘dark clown’ before veering off into the world of music as frontman for the legendary Wevie Stonder\, described by the BBC as ‘the Monty Python of electronic music’. Building on the same brand of anarchic comedy and wild fusion of musical influences\, Mr Vast is a one-man show that defies easy categorisation: a slapstick cabaret\, a surrealist happening\, an avant-garde concert\, a tragicomic carnival\, an ecstatic ritual. \nTickets: £10 – available to book online at Ticketsource
