SUMMARY:Malvern: The Culture and The Cure (Malvern Walking Festival)
DESCRIPTION:Starting at the Florence Nightingale bench in Church Street\, this is an entertaining and informative circular walk around Great Malvern led by a Civic Society guide. The emphasis will be on the town’s varied cultural history\, as well as its role as a centre for the controversial Water Cure in the 19th Century. We’ll hear about such artistic luminaries as Sir Edward Elgar\, Dame Laura Knight\, George Bernard Shaw\, Jenny Lind\, Evelyn Waugh\, CS Lewis and Elizabeth Barret Browning and their connections to Malvern. Plus how the Water Cure attracted the great and the good to this small Worcestershire town\, and how it was the starting point for one of Victorian England’s greatest scandals! Duration: approx 90 minutes. The route will include The Priory\, Belle Vue Terrace\, The Unicorn\, Dr Gully and Dr Wilson’s Water Cure Establishments and Priory Park. Due to the hilly nature of the town this is sadly not suitable for those with mobility issues. Includes one steep descent down steps. No stiles. \n£6.00 \nDistance: 1 miles\nDuration: 1.5 hours\nDifficulty: Easy\nDate: 21May & 24 May\nStart time: 2:30 pm\nWalk leader: Nick St George\nStart location: The Florence Nightingale Bench\, Church St\, Great Malvern (near Malvern Tourist Information Centre)\nChurch Street\nGreat Malvern\nWR14 2AY\nGrid reference: SO 776459\nWhat3Words: pits.spray.prices\nFurther details:\nNearest parking: Grange Road\, Edith Walk\, St Ann’s Road. SUMMARY:Tintern Abbey and the Devil’s Pulpit (Malvern Walking Festival)
DESCRIPTION:Tintern is one of the most impressive ruinous Abbey’s in the country\, for the walls of the great Church remain intact rising to their full height and pierced by soaring windows that flood the interior with light. It lies in the beautiful Wye Valley – a walk with spectacular views which initially follows the Wye Gorge downstream before climbing to return above the valley along Offa’s Dyke. Passed along the way is the Devil’s Pulpit\, a rocky outcrop overlooking the Abbey far below. \nThis walk follows woodland paths and tracks with some hill climbing and ends with a walk back along the River Wye to the car park by the Abbey where we can enjoy afternoon tea and cake as a reward. SUMMARY:Great Malvern Heritage Walk
DESCRIPTION:About the walk\nDiscover the rich heritage of one of England’s most charming spa towns\, famed for its invigorating Water Cure. \nJoin one of Malvern Civic Society’s volunteer guides to trace the town’s evolution\, from a 19th century spa destination\, to its role in World War II as an important centre for secret radar development. Along the way\, explore Victorian architecture\, Great Malvern Priory\, connections to composer Edward Elgar\, and sites celebrated through Malvern’s many blue plaques\, commemorating notable residents and visitors. \nWhether you’re a first-time visitor or a lifelong resident\, you’ll leave with a deeper appreciation for Malvern’s cultural and historical legacy. \nDates and times\nThe 90-minute tours operate every Saturday and Monday from April 2026 to October 2026\, starting at 10.30am from Malvern Tourist Information Centre on Church Street (contact: 01684 892289). \nAll walks are subject to guide availability. \nTickets\nThe cost is £7 for adults; 14 – 16 year olds go free. \nTickets are available online via TicketSource or at the Malvern Tourist Information Centre. Please note tickets for 14 – 16 year olds can be booked only through Malvern Tourist Information Centre (not online) \nPrivate group walks may be available – enquire directly to the TIC. \nAccessibility\nDue to the content of the tours and the hilly nature of Malvern\, these walks are not suitable for children under 14 years\, nor for anyone with mobility issues. \nDogs\nSorry – no dogs are allowed\, except assistance dogs. \nAlternative tour\nIn addition to the standard tour described above\, some guides offer a specialist tour\, by arrangement\, for those with a particular interest in the arts: “The Culture and The Cure”.
