SUMMARY:Talk - England: A Natural History by John Lewis-Stempel
DESCRIPTION:Bestselling nature writer John Lewis-Stempel will talk about his new book England: A Natural History. \nOur countryside is iconic: a series of distinctive habitats that unite to create a landscape that is unique for the rich diversity of our flora and fauna. In England\, his most magisterial book to date\, John Lewis-Stempel explores each in turn\, taking us from coast to moor\, from downs to field\, from the park to the village to create a vivid living portrait of the nation’s natural history. \nIn his trademark lyrical style\, Lewis-Stempel reveals the hidden workings of each habitat: the clear waters and dragonflies; the bluebells\, badgers and stag beetles; wild thyme; granite cliffs; rock pools and sandy beaches; red deer standing at ancient oaks; the wayside flowers of the lane; hedgehogs and hares; and snow on the high peak. Each landscape – be it calm green or wild moor\, plunging cliff or flatland fen – has shaped our idea of ourselves\, our sense of what it is to be in England. \nThe price of a ticket includes a copy of this stunningly beautiful book complete with decorated boards\, endpapers\, chapter heads and a map. England: A Natural History is the definitive volume on the English landscape and the capstone of John Lewis-Stempel’s nature writing. \nThis event is at Elmslie House\, 8 Avenue Road\, Malvern. \nPrices\nOne ticket + one book: £25\nTwo tickets + one book: £30\nBook online at Ticketsource or call Rossiter Books on 01684 368187

SUMMARY:Malvern Hills Cultural Walk
DESCRIPTION:Legendary fantasy authors JRR Tolkien and CS Lewis were frequent visitors to Malvern and the Malvern Hills and the distinctive landscape is thought to have inspired many features of Middle Earth and Narnia\, including the Giant’s Cave from The Hobbit and the Victorian gas lamps from The Lion\, the Witch & the Wardrobe. \nYou’ll choose between two routes\, the Tolkien Trail & the Lewis Loop\, both of which are outlined below. \nThe Tolkien Trail follows the main ridge south from the Wyche Cutting\, over several summits to the Giant’s Cave\, which is said to have inspired Tolkien’s first book\, The Hobbit. The trail then returns north\, with optional stops at the Malvern Hills Hotel and/or the Kettle Sings Cafe before ending where it began. \nThe Lewis Loop begins in Priory Park in Great Malvern and heads past Malvern College and Cherbourg House\, where Lewis went to school\, before pausing at the Lewis Memorial in Rosebank Gardens. Next it follows Narnia’s gas lamps up Happy Valley past St. Ann’s Well Cafe to the summit of North Hill before dropping down to Alexandra Road in Malvern Link\, where Lewis’s biographer\, George Sayer\, and composer Sir Edward Elgar lived. After passing Lewis and Tolkien’s favourite pub\, The Unicorn Inn on Belle Vue Terrace\, the loop ends at Great Malvern Priory\, home to what’s believed to be the original gas lamp. \nWhichever walk you choose\, you’ll hear tales of literary legends whilst savouring the most stunning views in the West Midlands. \nDates and booking\nThe walks are available on many dates\, often with the option of two start times on the same day. For more information\, including prices\, availability and to book. visit the Malvern Hills Cultural Walks page on Airbnb.

SUMMARY:When Vincent Met John
DESCRIPTION:Direct from Edinburgh Fringe Festival \nVincent died in 1890\, John died in 1980\, both of gunshot wounds to the chest. But imagine what might have happened\, had the two greatest artists of their time met? \nVincent van Gogh was a 19th century Dutch Post-Impressionist painter who is among the most famous and influential figures in the history of Western art. \nJohn Lennon was an English singer\, songwriter\, musician and peace activist who gained worldwide fame with The Beatles. \nAround five years before their deaths\, both men experienced profound change. \nVincent van Gogh finally renounced his religious ambitions and began to paint in earnest\, and despite great arguments with antagonist Paul Gaugin created his life’s great masterworks. \nJohn Lennon renounced sex\, drugs and rock and roll and began five years of seclusion as a family unit\, and despite great arguments with antagonist Paul McCartney created a son\, and what would be his final album. \nWith the clock ticking and with each man straining for something\, is there a way forward for either of these two passionate\, unpredictable\, temperamental and volatile artists? \nThis play takes place at their exact moment of crisis and decision\, exploring love\, death\, art and legacy. \nShow times\nSaturday 28 September 2024\, 2.30pm\nSaturday 28 September 2024\, 7.30pm
