SUMMARY:Malvern Hills Cultural Walk
DESCRIPTION:Legendary fantasy authors JRR Tolkien and CS Lewis were frequent visitors to Malvern and the Malvern Hills and the distinctive landscape is thought to have inspired many features of Middle Earth and Narnia\, including the Giant’s Cave from The Hobbit and the Victorian gas lamps from The Lion\, the Witch & the Wardrobe. \nYou’ll choose between two routes\, the Tolkien Trail & the Lewis Loop\, both of which are outlined below. \nThe Tolkien Trail follows the main ridge south from the Wyche Cutting\, over several summits to the Giant’s Cave\, which is said to have inspired Tolkien’s first book\, The Hobbit. The trail then returns north\, with optional stops at the Malvern Hills Hotel and/or the Kettle Sings Cafe before ending where it began. \nThe Lewis Loop begins in Priory Park in Great Malvern and heads past Malvern College and Cherbourg House\, where Lewis went to school\, before pausing at the Lewis Memorial in Rosebank Gardens. Next it follows Narnia’s gas lamps up Happy Valley past St. Ann’s Well Cafe to the summit of North Hill before dropping down to Alexandra Road in Malvern Link\, where Lewis’s biographer\, George Sayer\, and composer Sir Edward Elgar lived. After passing Lewis and Tolkien’s favourite pub\, The Unicorn Inn on Belle Vue Terrace\, the loop ends at Great Malvern Priory\, home to what’s believed to be the original gas lamp. \nWhichever walk you choose\, you’ll hear tales of literary legends whilst savouring the most stunning views in the West Midlands. \nDates and booking\nThe walks are available on many dates\, often with the option of two start times on the same day. DESCRIPTION:Visit Tenbury Wells this Christmas to see the amazing work of Hanah-Beth Bailey from Painted Fern Studio around the town whilst you shop. \nThe Tenbury Christmas Art Trail will run from 7 December 2024 until the New Year\, but there will still be much to see before then as the artworks take shape. Whilst some will not remain once the trail is over\, others will be kept on a more permanent basis for residents and visitors to enjoy. \nAt the time of writing\, Hanah-Beth has completed about 50 murals within a 5-mile radius of Tenbury Wells as well as schools and murals further afield such as Anchors Away soft play in Cleobury Mortimer and Exotic Zoo in Telford. Now setting up a first studio/shop in Tenbury\, The Painted Fern Studio\, Hanah-Beth will be teaching nature-based art workshops\, selling handmade art materials and homeware as well as teaching classes and making a creative hub within the town to support those using art and craft to build their own skills and businesses or to help maintain their mental health. \nSee the full list of artwork locations here

SUMMARY:Elgar's Cello Music
DESCRIPTION:Once again\, cellist Corrine Frost will be appearing with piano accompaniment from Clare Toomer in a recital of some of Elgar’s works. \nRichard Westwood-Brookes will provide an expert narrative giving a background history to each work and its significance in Elgar’s life. \nThe concert will feature a wide range of works\, arranged for cello and piano\, including the well-known Nimrod as well as rarely-played pieces such as ‘Romance’. The solo piano piece ‘In Smyrna’ is regarded as Elgar’s finest achievement for piano and altogether the programme will be a welcome and entertaining concert and talk for a December Saturday. \nThe concert is being staged thanks to the generous sponsorship of The Elgar Society. \nThis talk/concert will take place twice on Saturday 7 December 2024\, at 11am and then at 2pm. With just 60 tickets available per recital\, this will not be an event to miss. \nThe event is free\, but normal admission charges apply for the venue. Booking is essential.
