It also has a rich history\, with both Edward Elgar and Evelyn Waugh being frequent visitors. \nThe house and beautiful grounds are open to welcome visitors at various times throughout the year. Access to the house and gardens is by guided tour only and tickets must be pre-booked online. \nThe Madresfield Estate also hosts several popular events throughout the year within the grounds of the Court.   \n2025 season details\nThe 2025 tour season at Madresfield Court runs from the end of April until the end of June. \nTours generally run on Wednesdays\, Thursdays and Fridays (with some exceptions). \nOn most days of operation\, four tours (one at 10.30am\, 11.30am\, 1.30pm and 2.30pm) will run\, with each tour taking a maximum of fifteen people aged 16 and over. DESCRIPTION:Madresfield Court\, situated within the Madresfield Estate at the foot of the Malvern Hills\, is a moated stately home that has been in the Lygon family for over 900 years and is currently home to its 29th generation. \nThe house played a significant part in nurturing the Arts and Crafts movement and contains a fine collection of paintings\, furniture and ceramics.  It also has a rich history\, with both Edward Elgar and Evelyn Waugh being frequent visitors. \nThe house and beautiful grounds are open to welcome visitors at various times throughout the year. Access to the house and gardens is by guided tour only and tickets must be pre-booked online. \nThe Madresfield Estate also hosts several popular events throughout the year within the grounds of the Court.   \n2025 season details\nThe 2025 tour season at Madresfield Court runs from the end of April until the end of June. \nTours generally run on Wednesdays\, Thursdays and Fridays (with some exceptions). \nOn most days of operation\, four tours (one at 10.30am\, 11.30am\, 1.30pm and 2.30pm) will run\, with each tour taking a maximum of fifteen people aged 16 and over. There’s more to this story than you might imagine! \nFriday 8 August\, 7.30pm\nThe Police & Crime Commissioner for West Mercia\nJohn Campion (PCC West Mercia) will outline his role in this position and what police do in the area. \nFriday 12 September\, 7.30pm\nMalvern Rocks: The History of Quarrying in Malvern\nThose members and visitors who have moved to the Malvern area since the ’70s and ’80s will have known little of the effect of quarrying on the town and the hills. This impacts included the dangers\, the noise\, the turmoil and the scarring of the hills. Elaine Tomlinson’s talk will be your chance to find out about the geology of the rocks\, how they were exploited by industry and what it took to preserve the hills for future generations to enjoy. \nFriday 10 October\, 7.30pm\nNeedle Making in Worcestershire and Warwickshire\nRichard Churchly will discuss the start of the local needle trade around 1640 and explain how it developed from a tiny cottage industry into a significant force in the Redditch area. By 1900\, it employed tens of thousands of people\, whose labour produced all types of needles for export all around the globe. \nFriday 14 November\, 7.30pm\nThe King’s Thirds\nGeorge Demidowicz will tell the story of how a cash-strapped King Charles I attempted to raise revenue by exploiting the rights he enjoyed over the Royal Forests or Chases such that found in and around Malvern. These he shared with the neighbouring lords. The arrangement was that he gave up his rights over the “venison and vert” across the Chase on the basis that he would be allowed to enclose a third of the area. This\, the “King’s Thirds”\, could then be leased or sold to raise revenue.

DESCRIPTION:Legendary fantasy authors JRR Tolkien and CS Lewis were frequent visitors to the Malvern Hills around the middle of the 20th century and the distinctive landscape may have inspired features of Middle Earth and Narnia\, like the Giant’s Cave from the Hobbit and the Victorian gas lamps from The Lion\, the Witch & the Wardrobe. \nA century earlier\, authors Charles Darwin and Charles Dickens visited Malvern for the Water Cure and most of the treatment centres and guest houses still remain. \nThe Malvern Hills Literary Loop starts at the Mr. Tumnus bench in Priory Park and heads up past Knotsford House where Dickens stayed to Lewis’s former school Cherbourg House before pausing at the Lewis Memorial in Rosebank Gardens and following the gas lamps up to St. Ann’s Well cafe. \nAfter admiring the views around North Hill\, the trail descends to Alexandra Rd where Lewis’s close friend & biographer George Sayers lived\, opposite the former home of composer Edward Elgar. \nThe loop then heads up past Montreal House where Darwin stayed during his daughter’s treatment and past Lewis & Tolkien’s favourite pub The Unicorn Inn before passing the Hobbit door and down to Malvern Priory to find Anne Darwin’s grave and potentially the original Narnian gas lamp. \nDates and booking\nThe walks are available on many dates\, often with the option of two start times on the same day. DESCRIPTION:Come and explore the fascinating history and unique treasures of Great Malvern Priory from its Norman origins to the present day. Discover more about the glories of this architectural gem\, with its beautiful stained glass\, medieval tiles and misericords. \nThere are guided tours most Saturday mornings at 11am and occasionally at 2pm (or very occasionally at other times). Please check the Priory Church calendar to confirm that a tour is going ahead on the day of your visit. \nDonations are welcomed and all money from the tours goes towards the ongoing repairs and restoration of the Priory building and the medieval glass windows. \nIn addition to the scheduled Saturday tours\, groups tours are available by prior arrangement on any day between 9am and 5pm as long as the Priory is not being used for another event. The Malvern Water Music – Community Workshop takes place on Saturday 14 June\, from 2pm – 4pm\, at The Octagon Centre. Entry is free\, and everyone aged 12+ is warmly invited to join in. \nThis joyful\, inclusive event is commissioned by the Malvern Spa Association as part of a wider project celebrating the heritage and creative potential of Malvern’s famous waters. \nLed by Liz Dilnot Johnson – an award-winning composer and community music leader based in Malvern – the session offers fun and accessible creative activities for writers\, singers\, nature-lovers\, and anyone keen to try something different. Through sound\, movement\, and words\, participants will explore the bubbling springs and healing history of the local area – and turn that inspiration into something brand new. No experience is necessary – just curiosity and an open mind! \nThe workshop will contribute to the creation of a brand-new collaborative piece that will be performed at Malvern Theatres (Studio One) on Friday 4 July at 7pm. \n“I am so excited to be leading this creative session and to develop ideas together around bubbling springs and Malvern Water\,” says Liz. “Together we will create a new work that will be performed at the Malvern Theatre on July 4th. I love these kinds of workshops where everyone can relax and explore their imagination in different ways. Burnand \n“A one act little masterpiece” \nCox and Box is a one-act comic opera by Francis Cowley Burnand & Arthur Sullivan and is based on the 1847 farce\, Box & Cox. \nThis was Sullivan’s first successful comic opera\, written five years prior to his first opera with W. S. Gilbert. \nThe story centres on two lodgers\, one of whom works at night and the other during the day\, unwittingly sharing a room\, let by a cunning landlord. This works very well (at least for the landlord)\, until one of them has the day off and the two tenants meet in the room. \nPerformed by Mike Faulkner\, Ian Walton and Paul Thompson \nDido & Aeneas\nMusic by Henry Purcell Libretto by Nahum Tate \n“A monumental work in Baroque opera” \nDido and Aeneas is a short opera in three acts\, written by the English Baroque composer Henry Purcell with a libretto by Nahum Tate. It was Purcell’s single true opera\, and is amongst the earliest known English operas. \nThe tragic story\, from Virgil’s Aeneid concerns the love of Dido\, Queen of Carthage\, for the Trojan hero Aeneas\, and her despair when he abandons her. \nBy arrangement with Novello & Co Ltd \nShow times\nFriday 13 June 2025\, 7.30pm\nSaturday 14 June 2025\, 2.30pm
