DESCRIPTION:The Hop-Pickers (Starci na chmelu) is a film that has been labelled the first Czech film musical. It was West Side Story that inspired filmmaker Ladislav Rychman and screenwriter Vratislav Blažek to introduce the musical genre to their native Czech cinema. \nA smash hit upon its release in 1964\, the film is set during the annual summer hop harvest and focuses on the lives and loves of the nation’s youth\, assembled into the socialist agricultural brigade to bring the harvest in. \nMade two years before the Dubček liberalisation programme it is interesting to compare with The Beatles and other well-known British groups. \nTickets available from the Malvern Theatres website (film itself to be shown in the Coach House Theatre). \nImage © Kate Wrigglesworth

SUMMARY:From Algorithms to Exploits: Digital Safety in the Age of AI - Talk by Petr Somol (Midsummer Malvern)
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Petr Somol\, AI Research Director at General Digital (parent company of Norton\, Avira\, Avast and AVG)\, British Computer Society \nPetr focuses on building advanced AI solutions to protect consumers from a wide spectrum of digital threats including viruses\, malware\, scams\, fraud and online manipulation. \nHe earned his PhD from the Faculty of Mathematics and Physics at Charles University in Prague. Between 2000 and 2002\, he held a research associate position at the University of Cambridge and was a frequent visitor to Malvern. For 16 years he worked as a scientist in the field of pattern recognition at the Institute of Information Theory and Automation\, part of the Czech Academy of Sciences. Since 2013 he has led AI research teams focused on developing solutions for both enterprise and consumer markets. \nOutside of his professional work\, Petr has a strong interest in world history\, visual arts and typography\, which inform his appreciation for clarity\, structure and design – whether in data or in print. \nImage © Kate Wrigglesworth

DESCRIPTION:Directed by Carol Green \nThe Hills Singers perform in Studio One at Malvern Theatres in July with a programme called ‘Rejoice in Summer’. It will be a collection of songs from all ages\, celebrating the natural world\, poetry\, and human relations\, from the exuberant spiritual ‘Every time I feel the Spirit’\, to Mozart’s ‘Veni sancte Spiritus’\, and Handel’s ‘Hallelujah’ Chorus. \nThe concert also includes Malvern Spa Association’s first new piece of Malvern Water Music for the 21st century\, created with the community by Malvern-based composer Liz Dilnot-Johnson. Children under 14 and vulnerable adults should be accompanied by an appropriate adult. If you are under 14 or the carer of a vulnerable adult\, there is no charge. \nSorry – no dogs are allowed\, except assistance dogs. \nWalks are led by enthusiastic and knowledgeable guides from Malvern Civic Society. \nDates and times\nWalks run every Monday (including Bank Holidays) and Saturday at 10.30am from 5 April until 27 October 2025. \nPlease note – the following dates are fully booked: 2 June 2025\, 4 October 2025 \nBooking\nPlease book in advance to avoid disappointment. DESCRIPTION:Legendary fantasy authors JRR Tolkien and CS Lewis were frequent visitors to the Malvern Hills around the middle of the 20th century and the distinctive landscape may have inspired features of Middle Earth and Narnia\, like the Giant’s Cave from the Hobbit and the Victorian gas lamps from The Lion\, the Witch & the Wardrobe. \nA century earlier\, authors Charles Darwin and Charles Dickens visited Malvern for the Water Cure and most of the treatment centres and guest houses still remain. \nThe Malvern Hills Literary Loop starts at the Mr. Tumnus bench in Priory Park and heads up past Knotsford House where Dickens stayed to Lewis’s former school Cherbourg House before pausing at the Lewis Memorial in Rosebank Gardens and following the gas lamps up to St. Ann’s Well cafe. \nAfter admiring the views around North Hill\, the trail descends to Alexandra Rd where Lewis’s close friend & biographer George Sayers lived\, opposite the former home of composer Edward Elgar. \nThe loop then heads up past Montreal House where Darwin stayed during his daughter’s treatment and past Lewis & Tolkien’s favourite pub The Unicorn Inn before passing the Hobbit door and down to Malvern Priory to find Anne Darwin’s grave and potentially the original Narnian gas lamp. \nDates and booking\nThe walks are available on many dates\, often with the option of two start times on the same day. DESCRIPTION:Come and explore the fascinating history and unique treasures of Great Malvern Priory from its Norman origins to the present day. Discover more about the glories of this architectural gem\, with its beautiful stained glass\, medieval tiles and misericords. \nThere are guided tours most Saturday mornings at 11am and occasionally at 2pm (or very occasionally at other times). Please check the Priory Church calendar to confirm that a tour is going ahead on the day of your visit. \nDonations are welcomed and all money from the tours goes towards the ongoing repairs and restoration of the Priory building and the medieval glass windows. \nIn addition to the scheduled Saturday tours\, groups tours are available by prior arrangement on any day between 9am and 5pm as long as the Priory is not being used for another event. For these tours\, a small charge of £5 per person is made. Please visit the Friends of Malvern Priory website for more information and booking details. \n
