DESCRIPTION:The Swan Hotel hosts the Upton Jazz Fringe on Saturday and Sunday. \nProgramme for Sunday 29 June\n1pm – 2.45pm: West Coast Sound\nWest Coast Sound is an eight-piece Jazz group inspired by the groundbreaking Birth  of the Cool (Miles Davis) and the 1950s cool jazz of Chet Baker\, Gerry Mulligan and Art Pepper. Exploring a unique sound between a small group and a big band\, they mix dynamic arrangements with melodic improvisation. Featuring some of the best musicians from across the region\, West Coast Sound is led by Robin Miller (trumpet) with Pete Johnson (trombone)\, Maks Dmytruk\, Peter Hopcroft and Marie McNally (saxophones) and a driving rhythm section of Kate Hill (piano)\, Max Davison (bass) and Jake Terry (drums). \n3.45pm – 4.45pm: James Chadwick Trio\nJames Chadwick is both a subtle and versatile guitarist and a distinctive musician and composer\, well known around Cardiff and across South Wales. With Aidan Thorne on Bass and Ian Williams on drums the band will play material from the J4 set – Sounds of the 60s with a Jazz Twist. Expect the Beatles\, Beach Boys\, Bob Dylan\, David Bowie and classics like Walk on By and Stand by Me.  \n5.30pm – 7pm: Broad Mill Stream\nWhat a way to conclude our 7th Fringe…Broad Mill Stream are a joyous group of musicians with a playlist featuring everything from Fairport Convention via Steeleye Span to The Waterboys\, Lindisfarne and the Strawbs – and maybe even a bit of Shirley Bassey! Fine Folk Rock with energy and a great sense of fun. The Fringe is all about local talent\, diversity and pushing the boundaries beyond Jazz. We’ve had opera\, blues\, jazz funk and songs from the shows so why not electric folk?

DESCRIPTION:Legendary fantasy authors JRR Tolkien and CS Lewis were frequent visitors to the Malvern Hills around the middle of the 20th century and the distinctive landscape may have inspired features of Middle Earth and Narnia\, like the Giant’s Cave from the Hobbit and the Victorian gas lamps from The Lion\, the Witch & the Wardrobe. \nA century earlier\, authors Charles Darwin and Charles Dickens visited Malvern for the Water Cure and most of the treatment centres and guest houses still remain. \nThe Malvern Hills Literary Loop starts at the Mr. Tumnus bench in Priory Park and heads up past Knotsford House where Dickens stayed to Lewis’s former school Cherbourg House before pausing at the Lewis Memorial in Rosebank Gardens and following the gas lamps up to St. Ann’s Well cafe. \nAfter admiring the views around North Hill\, the trail descends to Alexandra Rd where Lewis’s close friend & biographer George Sayers lived\, opposite the former home of composer Edward Elgar. \nThe loop then heads up past Montreal House where Darwin stayed during his daughter’s treatment and past Lewis & Tolkien’s favourite pub The Unicorn Inn before passing the Hobbit door and down to Malvern Priory to find Anne Darwin’s grave and potentially the original Narnian gas lamp. \nDates and booking\nThe walks are available on many dates\, often with the option of two start times on the same day. SUMMARY:Graham Hughes’ Sunshine Kings (Upton Jazz Festival)
DESCRIPTION:Entry by wristband \nThe Sunshine Kings are led by Graham Hughes on the trombone and vocals (with the odd feature on chromatic harmonica by request!). Graham works with many of the most respected jazz musicians in the UK and often appears as a featured guest at festivals. He formed The Sunshine Kings for an appearance at a jazz club in London in 2009\, choosing a group of musicians from around London who were at the time little known on the traditional jazz scene. Graham has transcribed versions of interesting songs played by bands of the 1920s and 30s\, written his own arrangements of popular numbers\, and even composed one or two original numbers of his own for the band. Variety is the spice of life\, and The Sunshine Kings takes this mantra on board with their performances\, filling the music with freshness and fun.

Alan Barnes’s unique musicianship\, indefatigable touring\, and warm rapport with audiences have made him uniquely popular in British jazz. A multiple award winner\, Bruce Adams has shared the stage with such luminaries as Dick Hymn\, Benny Carter\, Al Cohn\, Kenny Davern\, Bob Wilber\, Bill and John Allred\, Dave McKenna\, Buddy Tate and Ray Bryant to name but a few. Bruce has often worked as a special guest soloist with both the Scottish Radio Orchestra and the BBC Big Band. Craig Milverton is one of Britain’s finest Jazz Pianists and this was recognised in 2010 by winning Best Jazz Pianist in the British Jazz Awards. His trio is often used to back a host of top names at clubs and festivals across Europe. Artists include Stacey Kent\, Jacqui Dankworth and Scott Hamilton. He works regularly with Digby Fairweather and his Half Dozen and was accompanist to Blues Singer George Melly with whom he recorded 3 CDs one of which featured Van Morrison. He has toured and performed at top venues and festivals across the globe. His trio features the amazing virtuoso on bass Tom Clarke-Hill and Nick Millward\, one of the finest drummers in the UK.

DESCRIPTION:Back for 2025\, join Malvern Town Council for an 18-week programme running throughout the summer months (with the exception of 6 July) that will see bands from around Worcestershire coming to play in the Priory Park Bandstand. There is something for everyone\, with many genres covered over the season including brass band\, jazz\, pop\, folk\, blues and many more. \nAll concerts run from 2.30pm – 4.30pm (except 17 August 2025\, when there will be an earlier start with an additional band at 1pm) and are free to attend. \nBring a rug or folding chair to sit on if you wish. DESCRIPTION:Legendary fantasy authors JRR Tolkien and CS Lewis were frequent visitors to the Malvern Hills around the middle of the 20th century and the distinctive landscape may have inspired features of Middle Earth and Narnia\, like the Giant’s Cave from the Hobbit and the Victorian gas lamps from The Lion\, the Witch & the Wardrobe. \nA century earlier\, authors Charles Darwin and Charles Dickens visited Malvern for the Water Cure and most of the treatment centres and guest houses still remain. \nThe Malvern Hills Literary Loop starts at the Mr. Tumnus bench in Priory Park and heads up past Knotsford House where Dickens stayed to Lewis’s former school Cherbourg House before pausing at the Lewis Memorial in Rosebank Gardens and following the gas lamps up to St. Ann’s Well cafe. \nAfter admiring the views around North Hill\, the trail descends to Alexandra Rd where Lewis’s close friend & biographer George Sayers lived\, opposite the former home of composer Edward Elgar. \nThe loop then heads up past Montreal House where Darwin stayed during his daughter’s treatment and past Lewis & Tolkien’s favourite pub The Unicorn Inn before passing the Hobbit door and down to Malvern Priory to find Anne Darwin’s grave and potentially the original Narnian gas lamp. \nDates and booking\nThe walks are available on many dates\, often with the option of two start times on the same day. They play an impressive variety of styles\, from 1930s swing to 1940s cool\, with an occasional glance back to the 1920s\, making over old standards with fresh arrangements\, playing with panache and an obvious infectious enjoyment. The addition of Boswell Sisters type three-part harmonies are a superb feature of this band. Always something going on with 12 instruments between them\, this band\, led by Zoe Lambert (reeds\, vocals) and Debbie Arthurs (reeds\, drums\, vocals)\, with Rachel Hayward (banjo\, guitar\, vibes\, vocals)\, Jude Whitlock (bass) and Anna Menter (piano) generates plenty of energy and enthusiasm\, and is well received at events throughout the country.

DESCRIPTION:Cost\nAdults: £7 (plus small booking fee online; no booking fee if booking direct in person or on 01684 892289)\nCarers and children under 14: Free \nAbout the walk\nWhy not join one of Malvern Civic Society’s walks and find out about the fascinating history of Malvern? \n– See how Malvern’s famous Water Cure and Spa flourished in the 19th Century\n– Learn about the mediaeval Priory\n– Find out about the town’s Elgar connections\n– Hear of important visitors to the town and the story behind some ‘blue plaques’\n– Discover more about the coming of radar \nWalks last approximately 90 minutes. \nPlease be aware that Great Malvern is a hillside town and our tour follows its steep gradients and steps along narrow pavements. \nIf you have a disability that requires support from a carer\, the carer goes free. Children under 14 and vulnerable adults should be accompanied by an appropriate adult. If you are under 14 or the carer of a vulnerable adult\, there is no charge. \nSorry – no dogs are allowed\, except assistance dogs. \nWalks are led by enthusiastic and knowledgeable guides from Malvern Civic Society. \nDates and times\nWalks run every Monday (including Bank Holidays) and Saturday at 10.30am from 5 April until 27 October 2025. \nPlease note – the following dates are fully booked: 2 June 2025\, 4 October 2025 \nBooking\nPlease book in advance to avoid disappointment.
