SUMMARY:Memoir of a Snail (15) (Borderlines Film Festival)
DESCRIPTION:DIRECTOR: Adam Elliot\nWITH THE VOICES OF: Sarah Snook\, Kodi Smit-McPhee\, Jacki Weaver\nAUSTRALIA\, 2024\,\n1 HOURS 34 MINUTES\,\nENGLISH \nOscar-winning director Adam Elliot’s distinctive stop-motion animation style is perfect for conveying the sweet pathos of the outsider. \nIn 1970s Australia\, closeknit twins Grace and Gilbert are separated to opposite end of the continent while still children. Grace moves in with an affluent ‘swinger’ couple\, while Gilbert\, whose ambition is to be a fire eater\, is fostered by members of a cult. Grace’s life changes when she meets a colourful\, eccentric old lady called Pinky who has ‘done it all’ – from making love to John Denver to playing ping pong with Fidel Castro. \nWitty\, inventive but intensely full of feeling – as well as snail-obsessed – this is an animation gem. \n“He makes mainstream animation look a bit neurotypical.” Peter Bradshaw\, The Guardian \nBest Film Award\, BFI London Film Festival 2024 \nShow Times\n*Film starts at advertised time*\nFriday 7th March at 4.15pm – FORUM\nSunday 9th March at 4.30pm – STUDIO ONE

SUMMARY:Flow (U) (Preview) (Borderlines Film Festival)
DESCRIPTION:Director: Gints Zilbalodis\nBelgium/France/Latvia\, 2024\, 1 hour 24 minutes\, no dialogue\nR Relaxed screening: Saturday 8th March at 11am \nIn the face of a devastating flood\, the solitary Cat embarks on a bold adventure that pushes both humans and dialogue out of the frame. \nIn a mysterious\, unearthly environment\, rendered in a distinctive 3D animation style\, Cat forges bonds with other creatures\, all imbued with a rare specificity of character\, despite never uttering a word. As with last year’s Robot Dreams\, the power of animation to tell universal\, emotionally piercing stories about our connections with others is unparalleled. It’s a treat not only for cat lovers (who will find themselves utterly charmed)\, but for anyone who loves to be dazzled by the incredible scope of animation. \nShortlisted for International Feature Film Oscar (Latvia). \nPreview courtesy of Curzon Film. \nShow times\n*Film starts at advertised time*\nSunday 2nd March at 1.30pm\nFriday 7th March at 4.30pm\nSaturday 8th March at 11am (Relaxed Screening)

DESCRIPTION:DIRECTOR: Athena Rachel Tsangari\nSTARRING: Caleb Landry Jones\, Harry Melling\, Rosy McEwen\, Arinzé Kene\nUK/GERMANY/GREECE\, 2023\,\n2 HOURS 11 MINUTES\,\nENGLISH \nShot in Argyllshire\, Jim Crace’s novel about a closed rural community in an unspecified past undergoes imaginative realisation by Greek film maker Athena Rachel Tsangari. \nTsangari\, who has previously worked alongside Yorgos Lanthimos\, follows her incisive portrait of male anxiety\, Chevalier (2015)\, with a bold\,vivid and good-looking take on the period film. In the wake of a mysterious stable fire\, three incomers are blamed and persecuted\, but the biggest threats arrive separately. Modern ideas about enclosure unsettle the communal notions laid out by landowner Master Kent. SUMMARY:Sex (15) (Borderlines Film Festival)
DESCRIPTION:DIRECTOR: Dag Johan Haugerud\nSTARRING: Thorbjørn Harr\, Jan Gunnar Røise\, Siri Forberg\, Birgitte Larsen\nNORWAY 2024\,\n1 HOUR 58 MINUTES\,\nNORWEGIAN + ENGLISH SUBTITLES \nTwo chimney sweeps in monogamous\, heterosexual marriages both end up in situations that challenge their views on sexuality and gender roles. \nIn conversation at work\, the sweeps confide in each other about unusual experiences they’ve had. One talks about his sexual encounter with another man\, without considering it either\nan expression of homosexuality or infidelity and discusses it with his wife afterwards. The other finds himself in nocturnal dreams where he is seen (by David Bowie) as a woman\, stirring confusion and leading him to question how much his personality is shaped by the gaze of others. \nThis warm\, absorbing leap into the complexities of gender and sexuality – and male friendship – manages to be deep and light at the same time. \nShow Times\n*Film starts at advertised time*\nFriday 7th March at 7.15pm\nSaturday 15th March at 10.45am\nVenue: Cinema

SUMMARY:The AI Revolution: How It Happened and What It Means (Festival of Ideas)
DESCRIPTION:Artificial Intelligence has gone viral. ChatGPT\, the world’s first mass-market general-purpose AI tool\, acquired 100 million users in a few weeks. But why did a technology 70 years in the making finally take off? And what does it all mean – should we be excited\, afraid – or both? \nWhile AI has been a notable and much-talked-about emerging technology for at least a decade\, the rate of progress in the past few years has been remarkable – and possibly unsettling. Generative AI\, most prominently in the form of Large Language Models (LLMs) such as ChatGPT\, has gone viral\, making it the first general purpose AI technology to reach a global audience. In this talk\, Michael Wooldridge will explain what generative AI and how is it different\, as well as ask why generative AI has taken off now. Michael will consider the capabilities of generative AI now\, and how they could evolve\, and the implications for all of us. \nSuitable for: age 12 years and up.

SUMMARY:Drawing in the Jungle (Festival of Ideas)
DESCRIPTION:Writer and illustrator Will Hughes takes you deep into the jungle to create your own illustrated story in this workshop suitable for participants of all ages. \nIn this session\, he’ll take you deep into the jungle\, but thankfully without the danger of being chased by a tiger or gobbled up by a very large snake. SUMMARY:Malvern Hills Literary Loop: Tolkien\, Lewis\, Darwin & Dickens
DESCRIPTION:Legendary fantasy authors JRR Tolkien and CS Lewis were frequent visitors to the Malvern Hills around the middle of the 20th century and the distinctive landscape may have inspired features of Middle Earth and Narnia\, like the Giant’s Cave from the Hobbit and the Victorian gas lamps from The Lion\, the Witch & the Wardrobe. \nA century earlier\, authors Charles Darwin and Charles Dickens visited Malvern for the Water Cure and most of the treatment centres and guest houses still remain. \nThe Malvern Hills Literary Loop starts at the Mr. Tumnus bench in Priory Park and heads up past Knotsford House where Dickens stayed to Lewis’s former school Cherbourg House before pausing at the Lewis Memorial in Rosebank Gardens and following the gas lamps up to St. Ann’s Well cafe. \nAfter admiring the views around North Hill\, the trail descends to Alexandra Rd where Lewis’s close friend & biographer George Sayers lived\, opposite the former home of composer Edward Elgar. \nThe loop then heads up past Montreal House where Darwin stayed during his daughter’s treatment and past Lewis & Tolkien’s favourite pub The Unicorn Inn before passing the Hobbit door and down to Malvern Priory to find Anne Darwin’s grave and potentially the original Narnian gas lamp. \nDates and booking\nThe walks are available on many dates\, often with the option of two start times on the same day. For more information\, including prices\, availability and to book. visit the Malvern Hills Literary Loop: Tolkien\, Lewis\, Darwin & Dickens page on Airbnb.

SUMMARY:The Only Way Is Up (Festival of Ideas)
DESCRIPTION:Combining the latest data with expert analysis across health\, children’s services\, the economy\, environment\, policing and defence\, Polly Toynbee and David Walker tell the story of what has gone wrong and what must now be remedied. \nIt’s only when your feet touch the bottom of the swamp that you can push up to the surface. By 2030 the UK could be so much better\, so much more productive\, fairer\, cleaner\, greener\, healthier and more contented. Polly Toynbee and David Walker benchmark the country’s progress on that pathway. Yes\, it’s a steep gradient\, but the only way is up.

SUMMARY:Human Rights: The Case for the Defence (Festival of Ideas)
DESCRIPTION:On International Women’s Day\, join two feminist icons\, Baroness Hale of Richmond and Baroness Chakrabarti\, as they discuss justice\, rights and free speech.\nAfter the devastation of the Second World War\, the international community came together to enshrine fundamental rights to refuge\, health\, education and living standards\, for privacy\, fair trials and free speech\, and outlawing torture\, slavery and discrimination. Their aim was greater global justice\, equality\, and peace. That settlement is now in danger\, attacked by opponents from across the political spectrum and populist and authoritarian movements worldwide. We are threatened by wars\, inequality\, new technologies and climate catastrophe\, and we need our human rights now more than ever. In her powerful\, accessible book\, Shami Chakrabarti\, lawyer\, parliamentarian and leading British human rights defender\, shows us why human rights are essential for our future. \nIn this session\, Brenda Hale and Shami Chakrabarti provide an indispensable guide to the law and logic underpinning human dignity and universal freedoms. They will engage both sceptics and supporters\, equipping believers in the battle of ideas and persuading doubters to think again. For human rights to survive\, they must be far better understood by everyone. \nSuitable for: age 12 years and up.

SUMMARY:The Future Ain’t What It Used To Be (Festival of Ideas)
DESCRIPTION:Mark Lewney delivers his amazing physics show – it’s about futurism and the physics of predicting the future\, in which Uncertainty plays a starring role. \nWhy aren’t astrologers rich? Surely\, the horoscope of a footballer would tell them how to win a game? The science of foretelling the future has changed dramatically over the centuries\, so how is it that we can predict some things\, such as total eclipses\, but not others? Guitar physicist\, Dr Mark Lewney\, presents ‘a history of the future’\, beginning with films such as 2001 Space Odyssey and Back To The Future 2. Mark will explain in understandable language what chaos theory and quantum physics are\, and how these mind-blowing theories prevent us from predicting everyday life. He will look at the evolution of science and technology and how\, with the development of supermaterials such as graphene\, our future may change completely. Even though we cannot be sure exactly what the future holds\, we do know that it is going to be very exciting when we get there! \n Suitable for: age 12 years and up

SUMMARY:Who Do You Really Think You Are? (Festival of Ideas)
DESCRIPTION:Join geneticist and broadcaster\, Adam Rutherford\, as he takes his genetics shears and history axe in hand and pollards\, prunes and chops down some of the (genealogy\, family and evolution) trees we take for granted\, and plants much better ones. \nThe tree of life is the most wondrous demonstration of evolution in all its magnificent splendour. Except it’s not a tree at all. Genealogy and family trees are the ties that bind us to our ancestors\, descendants and local history. They’re not trees either. And the story of human evolution is our species’s family tree: guess what? Also not a tree. The whole of life on Earth is a tangled bank\, and it can be guaranteed that in this talk you will discover your royal heritage. \nWarning: contains a small bit of maths.
