SUMMARY:The End (12A) PREVIEW (Borderlines Film Festival)
DESCRIPTION:DIRECTOR: Joshua Oppenheimer\nSTARRING: Tilda Swinton\, George MacKay\, Moses Ingram\, Michael Shannon\nDENMARK/GERMANY/IRELAND/ITALY/UK/SWEDEN\, 2024\,\n2 HOURS 28 MINUTES\,\nENGLISH \nJoshua Oppenheimer follows documentaries The Act of Killing and The Look of Silence with a bold move: an all-star musical about a family that has survived the end of the world. \nTwenty-five years after environmental collapse left the Earth uninhabitable\, Mother\, Father and Son and their few companions are confined to a palatial bunker. They struggle to maintain hope and a sense of normalcy through the rituals of daily life – until the arrival of a stranger. Suddenly the frail bonds of optimism that have held this wealthy clan together begin to fray. As tensions rise\, long repressed feelings of remorse and resentment threaten to destroy the balance. \nBut difficult truths point to a way forward\, one based on acceptance\, love\, and a capacity for change. \nPreview courtesy of MUBI \nShow Times\n*Film starts at advertised time*\nFriday 7th March at 4pm – CINEMA\nSunday 9th March at 12.45pm – CINEMA\nTuesday 11th March at 11:45pm – FORUM

SUMMARY:Malvern Hills Literary Loop: Tolkien\, Lewis\, Darwin & Dickens
DESCRIPTION:Legendary fantasy authors JRR Tolkien and CS Lewis were frequent visitors to the Malvern Hills around the middle of the 20th century and the distinctive landscape may have inspired features of Middle Earth and Narnia\, like the Giant’s Cave from the Hobbit and the Victorian gas lamps from The Lion\, the Witch & the Wardrobe. \nA century earlier\, authors Charles Darwin and Charles Dickens visited Malvern for the Water Cure and most of the treatment centres and guest houses still remain. \nThe Malvern Hills Literary Loop starts at the Mr. Tumnus bench in Priory Park and heads up past Knotsford House where Dickens stayed to Lewis’s former school Cherbourg House before pausing at the Lewis Memorial in Rosebank Gardens and following the gas lamps up to St. Ann’s Well cafe. \nAfter admiring the views around North Hill\, the trail descends to Alexandra Rd where Lewis’s close friend & biographer George Sayers lived\, opposite the former home of composer Edward Elgar. \nThe loop then heads up past Montreal House where Darwin stayed during his daughter’s treatment and past Lewis & Tolkien’s favourite pub The Unicorn Inn before passing the Hobbit door and down to Malvern Priory to find Anne Darwin’s grave and potentially the original Narnian gas lamp. \nDates and booking\nThe walks are available on many dates\, often with the option of two start times on the same day. For more information\, including prices\, availability and to book. visit the Malvern Hills Literary Loop: Tolkien\, Lewis\, Darwin & Dickens page on Airbnb.

SUMMARY:On Voice and the Feeling of Truth (Malvern Festival of Ideas)
DESCRIPTION:Join novelist\, poet and playwright Owen Sheers as he concludes our weekend with readings and conversation around his attempts to move beyond a partial truth through engaging with ideas of hybridity\, lyricism and voice. \nIn this final session of the 2025 event\, Professor Owen Sheers will read from three of his recent works\, the verse-drama Pink Mist and the BBC film-poems The Green Hollow and To Provide All People. His reading will be interspersed with conversation about the creative processes involved in creating these works\, all three of which engage with ideas of hybridity\, lyricism and voice to try and move beyond a partial ‘knowing’ of the truth towards a fuller ‘feeling’ of it. Blending documentary and poetic devices\, Owen uses the voices of characters informed by multiple interviews to create communal works that address such subjects as the aftermath of conflict\, the Aberfan disaster\, and the NHS. The nature of such subjects is that the truth of individual experience at their core is often anonymised in more general public narratives. By shaping his writing around composite characters\, many voices and alternating perspectives\, Owen is able to write in counterflow to this anonymisation\, engaging rhythm\, rhyme and imagery to create a strangely intimate lyrical distance through which the gap between a reader and the experiences they are reading is\, paradoxically\, narrowed to great emotional effect. \nSuitable for: 12 years and up

SUMMARY:La Cocina (15) PREVIEW (Borderlines Film Festival)
DESCRIPTION:DIRECTOR: Alonso Ruizpalacios\nSTARRING: Raúl Briones\, Rooney Mara\, Anna Diaz\, Motell Foster\nUS/MEXICO\, 2024\,\n2 HOURS 19 MINUTES\,\nENGLISH/SPANISH + ENGLISH SUBTITLES \nTensions simmer in a busy Times Square restaurant where back-of-house staff chase the American dream. \nHere\, in fine-grained black and white\, is the pressure cooker of the modern professional kitchen\, shifting away from haute cuisine to the phenomenally tough lives of the immigrant workers who keep the line running. Newcomer Estela pitches up seeking work on a day when money goes missing\, with swaggerer Pedro the prime suspect. Meanwhile\, hostess Julia grapples with her own commitments. \nDerived from Arnold Wesker’s play\, The Kitchen\, but informed by Ruizpalacios’ own experiences\, this microcosm of contemporary capitalism teeters on the edge of total chaos. \n“The Bear on steroids” Deadline \nPreview courtesy of Picturehouse Entertainment \nThe screening on Thursday in Malvern is sponsored by BAR LIMÓN \nShow Times\n*Film starts at advertised time*\nThursday 6th March at 7.30pm – FORUM\nSunday 9th March at 4pm – CINEMA

SUMMARY:Red Path (18) PREVIEW (Borderlines Film Festival)
DESCRIPTION:DIRECTOR: Lotfi Achour\nSTARRING: Ali Helali\, Yassine Samouni\, Wided Dabebi\, Jemii Lamari\,\nTUNISIA/FRANCE/BELGIUM/POLAND/SAUDI ARABIA/QATAR\, 2024\,\n1 HOUR 37 MINUTES\,\nARABIC + ENGLISH SUBTITLES \nSet in the isolation of the vast Tunisian mountains\, this dreamlike journey probes the wounded psyche of a young shepherd. \nWhen a group of jihadists set upon two young shepherds\, killing one of them\, Achraf\, 13\, is forced to bring the head of his cousin Nizar to the family as a macabre message. Based on a real murder during the 2015 Tunisian unrest\, the story foregrounds Achraf’s point of view\, from his playful interaction with his cousin\, through the gut-churning terror of the attack\, to his mounting inner anxiety as he faces his family’s grief and dilemma. \nWith stunning cinematography\, the film delves deep into the psychological impact of violence on children\, portraying the stark reality of rural Tunisia while contrasting it with more introspective\, ethereal moments. \nPreview courtesy of Sovereign Film Distribution \nShow Times\n*Film starts at advertised time*\nSunday 9th March at 4.15pm\nThursday 13th March at 7.30pm\nVenue: Forum Theatre

SUMMARY:Memoir of a Snail (15) (Borderlines Film Festival)
DESCRIPTION:DIRECTOR: Adam Elliot\nWITH THE VOICES OF: Sarah Snook\, Kodi Smit-McPhee\, Jacki Weaver\nAUSTRALIA\, 2024\,\n1 HOURS 34 MINUTES\,\nENGLISH \nOscar-winning director Adam Elliot’s distinctive stop-motion animation style is perfect for conveying the sweet pathos of the outsider. \nIn 1970s Australia\, closeknit twins Grace and Gilbert are separated to opposite end of the continent while still children. Grace moves in with an affluent ‘swinger’ couple\, while Gilbert\, whose ambition is to be a fire eater\, is fostered by members of a cult. Grace’s life changes when she meets a colourful\, eccentric old lady called Pinky who has ‘done it all’ – from making love to John Denver to playing ping pong with Fidel Castro. \nWitty\, inventive but intensely full of feeling – as well as snail-obsessed – this is an animation gem. \n“He makes mainstream animation look a bit neurotypical.” Peter Bradshaw\, The Guardian \nBest Film Award\, BFI London Film Festival 2024 \nShow Times\n*Film starts at advertised time*\nFriday 7th March at 4.15pm – FORUM\nSunday 9th March at 4.30pm – STUDIO ONE

SUMMARY:Ernest Cole: Lost & Found (15) PREVIEW (Borderlines Film Festival)
DESCRIPTION:DIRECTOR: Raoul Peck\nNARRATOR: LaKeith Stanfield\nUS/FRANCE\, 2024\,\n1 HOUR 46 MINUTES\,\nENGLISH \nPhotographer Ernest Cole’s groundbreaking work that exposed the inhumanity and injustice of South African apartheid to the world is brought to life by documentary maker Raoul Peck. \nPublished in 1967 when Cole was only in his 20s\, his book House of Bondage is filled with images of the acutely painful photographs Cole risked his own life to take: psychological portraits of existence within a brutal caste system\, its violence and indignity. Exiled to Europe and America\, he spent the rest of his life disillusioned and enraged by the silence of the West in the face of the apartheid regime. Of a piece with Peck’s body of work (including I Am Not Your Negro)\, this also functions as detective thriller that reassesses Cole’s life and his contribution to our understanding of race. \nPreview courtesy of Dogwoof \nShow Times\n*Film starts at advertised time*\nSunday 9th March at 7pm – STUDIO ONE\nTuesday 11th March at 3pm – FORUM \n

He uses an entirely visual means to explore not only what happened\, but also how it felt\, finding a new language to speak about the long shadow of trauma\, one that leaves cliché behind. \nPushing the painful to the margins\, just as its characters do\, this is impressive filmmaking. \n“How often do you watch something so original\, it changes the way you think about image construction itself?” Sophie Monks Kaufman\, Time Out \nThe screening on Sunday is sponsored by MALVERN BOOK COOPERATIVE \nShow Times\n*Film starts at advertised time*\nSaturday 8th March at 7.15pm\nSunday 9th March at 7.15pm\nVenue: Cinema

SUMMARY:Milton Jones: Ha!Milton
DESCRIPTION:This is not a musical. Milton Jones is tone deaf and has no sense of rhythm\, but at least he doesn’t make a song and dance about it. \nHe has more important things to discuss\, including giraffes…and there’s a bit about tomatoes. \nYou may know him from Mock the Week\, Live at the Apollo or Radio 4. Or that time he stood for the Scottish National Party\, fought a hard campaign\, but in the end had to respect the wishes of the people of Cardiff. \nA whole new show of daftness. You know it makes sense.

DESCRIPTION:DIRECTOR: Victoria Mapplebeck\nSTARRING: Victoria Mapplebeck\, Jim Mapplebeck\nUK\, 2024\,\n1 HOUR 30 MINUTES\,\nENGLISH \nFinding herself single\, pregnant\, and broke at 38\, BAFTA award-winning director Victoria Mapplebeck turned the camera on herself. \nRecording hundreds of hours of footage through 20 years\, she documents her own life and that of her son Jim\, from the thumbsup he gave her during her first scan\, to his first day at college. Intimate and engagingly frank\, she records moments of sheer joy: holidays\, birthdays\, Jim’s love of singing and dancing as he grows into an articulate and funny individual. But there’s adversity to navigate too: breast cancer\, the pandemic\, absent fathers\, late teens and the pitfalls they bring. \nThis celebration of messy lives and solo motherhood is proof that epic journeys can begin and end at home. \nPreview courtesy of Tull Stories \nShow Times\n*Film starts at advertised time*\nMonday 10th March at 4pm – FORUM\nSaturday 15th March at 7pm – STUDIO ONE

DESCRIPTION:Director: Victor Kossakovsky\nFrance/Germany/USA\, 2024\, 1 hour 38 minutes\, English/Italian + English subtitles \nThe latest film from master documentarian Victor Kossakovsky (Gunda\, Aquarela) is an epic\, intimate\, and poetic meditation on architecture. \nMonumental in scale and vision and largely without narration\, it’s an absorbing journey that takes us from tomb-like Ukrainian cities through mind-boggling modern quarrying and construction methods to an ancient stone monolith in Lebanon. With architect Michele De Lucchi as our occasional guide\, it manages to ask searching questions about our short-sighted use of natural resources: how do we build\, and how can we build better – before it’s too late? \n“Blatantly dazzling\, epic-scale filmmaking” Guy Lodge\, Variety \nShow Times\n*Film starts at advertised time*\nTuesday 11th March at 11am – CINEMA\nThursday 13th March at 1.15pm – FORUM

SUMMARY:A Traveler’s Needs (12A) (Preview) (Borderlines Film Festival)
DESCRIPTION:Director: Hong Sangsoo\nStarring: Isabelle Huppert\, Lee Hyeyoung\, Kwon Haehyo\nSouth Korea\, 2024\, 1 hour 20 minutes\, French/Korean/English + English subtitles \nA deliciously mischievous comic turn from Isabelle Huppert as Iris who has set up as a French language teacher in Korea using her own rather baffling methods. \nIris has no backstory. We’re introduced to her through a couple of her bizarre but relaxed teaching sessions in which\, with complete self-assurance\, she converses with her pupils (in English!). \nPunctured with small cultural incongruities\, including Iris’s partiality for makkeolli\, a potent Korean milky rice wine\, we pick up more detail but resolve nothing. This is South Korea’s super-orolific director Hong Sangsoo’s third collaboration with Huppert and perhaps the most delightful in its gentle\, oblique humour that touches on language\, poetry\, exile and the art of communication. \nPreview courtesy of Finecut Co. Ltd \nShow times\n*Film starts at advertised time*\nTuesday 4th March at 6pm\nTuesday 11th March at 4.45pm\nVenue: Cinema

SUMMARY:Sunrise: A Song of Two Humans (U) With Live Musical Accompaniment (Borderlines Film Festival)
DESCRIPTION:DIRECTOR: FW Murnau\nSTARRING: George O’Brien\, Janet Gaynor\, Margaret Livingston\nUS\, 1927\,\n1 HOUR 35 MINUTES\,\nSILENT + LIVE MUSICAL ACCOMPANIMENT \nThis lyrical masterpiece from the director of Nosferatu\, a pinnacle of silent cinema\, is a study of betrayal\, love and reconciliation. With live multi-instrumental accompaniment from Stephen Horne and Elizabeth-Jane Baldry on harp. \nSeduced by a vamp from the city\, an unsophisticated farmer in a country village plans to murder his wife. However\, on their journey to reach town\, the couple rediscover their love for each other in a dazzling jazz age sequence. With its dreamlike realism\, fluid camera work and simple\, intense images of unequalled beauty\, this adds up to one of the most enchanting experiences in the history of cinema. \n“Murnau’s greatness lies in this realization – that it is possible to photograph the real world and yet invest it with a variety of poetic\, imaginative\, and subjective qualities.”David Thomson \nBest Actress\, Best Cinematography\, Artistic Quality of Production\, Oscars\, 1929 \nShow Times\nTuesday 11th March at 6pm\nVenue: Forum Theatre

SUMMARY:The Seed of the Sacred Fig (15) (Borderlines Film Festival)
DESCRIPTION:Director: Mohammad Rasoulof\nStarring: Mahsa Rostami\, Setareh Maleki\, Niousha Akhshi\, Missagh Zareh\, Soheila Golestani\nIran/Germany/France\, 2024\, 2 hours 48 minutes\, Farsi + English subtitles \nDissident director Rasoulof personalises dividing lines in Iranian society in a family drama. \nIman sees benefits for his family in his promotion to interrogator for the Islamic Revolutionary Court. His daughters\, however\, are suspicious of his increasing collaboration with the regime. Encouraged to wave through death sentences\, he is warned not to confide in his wife (actor and anti-hijab protester Soheila Golestani). Iman’s divided loyalties are exposed when his government-issued handgun goes missing and suspicion falls on the women at home. \nCombining an electrifying generational battle with real-life footage of Iran’s contemporary protest movement gives the film a startling relevance. What follows involves supremely dramatic\, edge-of-the-seat revelations. \nShow times\n*Film starts at advertised time*\nWednesday 5th March at 1pm\nTuesday 11th March at 7.15pm\nVenue: Cinema
