SUMMARY:RBO 2025/26: La Sonnambula
DESCRIPTION:Live broadcast from The Metropolitan Opera \nFollowing triumphant Met performances in Roméo et Juliette\, La Traviata\, and Lucia di Lammermoor\, Nadine Sierra excels again as Amina\, who sleepwalks her way into the hearts of the audience in Bellini’s poignant tale of love lost and found. In his new production\, Rolando Villazón — the tenor who has established a brilliant second career as a director — keeps the opera’s original setting in the Swiss Alps but uses its somnambulant plot to explore the emotional and psychological valleys of the mind. Tenor Xabier Anduaga returns after his acclaimed 2023 Met debut in L’Elisir d’Amore\, co-starring as Amina’s fiancé Elvino\, alongside soprano Sydney Mancasola as her rival\, Lisa\, and bass Alexander Vinogradov as Count Rodolfo. Riccardo Frizza is the conductor for this\, one of opera’s most ravishing works. \nRunning time: 195 minutes (one interval)\nSung in Italian with English subtitles

SUMMARY:Malvern Hills Literary Loop: Tolkien\, Lewis\, Darwin & Dickens
DESCRIPTION:Legendary fantasy authors JRR Tolkien and CS Lewis were frequent visitors to the Malvern Hills around the middle of the 20th century and the distinctive landscape may have inspired features of Middle Earth and Narnia\, like the Giant’s Cave from the Hobbit and the Victorian gas lamps from The Lion\, the Witch & the Wardrobe. \nA century earlier\, authors Charles Darwin and Charles Dickens visited Malvern for the Water Cure and most of the treatment centres and guest houses still remain. \nThe Malvern Hills Literary Loop starts at the Mr. Tumnus bench in Priory Park and heads up past Knotsford House where Dickens stayed to Lewis’s former school Cherbourg House before pausing at the Lewis Memorial in Rosebank Gardens and following the gas lamps up to St. Ann’s Well cafe. \nAfter admiring the views around North Hill\, the trail descends to Alexandra Rd where Lewis’s close friend & biographer George Sayers lived\, opposite the former home of composer Edward Elgar. \nThe loop then heads up past Montreal House where Darwin stayed during his daughter’s treatment and past Lewis & Tolkien’s favourite pub The Unicorn Inn before passing the Hobbit door and down to Malvern Priory to find Anne Darwin’s grave and potentially the original Narnian gas lamp. \nDates and booking\nThe walks are available on many dates\, often with the option of two start times on the same day. When her confidante and former governess\, Miss Taylor\, marries Mr Weston\, Emma\, having introduced the pair\, takes credit for the success and decides that a future in matchmaking lies before her. \nThus begins a comic journey through the lives and loves of the eponymous character’s friends and neighbours\, depicting the burgeoning Regency social scene of Bath and Weymouth.
