SUMMARY:Tenebrae – Spanish Glories (Autumn in Malvern Festival)
DESCRIPTION:Lauded as ‘phenomenal’ (The Times) and ‘devastatingly beautiful’ (Gramophone Magazine)\, award-winning choir Tenebrae\, under the direction of Nigel Short\, is one of the world’s leading vocal ensembles and is renowned for its passion and precision. The choir has earned international acclaim for its interpretations of choral music from the Renaissance through to contemporary masterpieces and is back at Great Malvern Priory in 2026 after its sell-out concert last year. This year\, the programme features glories of the Spanish Renaissance\, centring on Tomás Luis de Victoria’s Requiem Mass. This masterpiece is one of a handful of large-scale works which enjoys mainstream appeal in the 21st century and for many\, it represents what Renaissance polyphony is\, what it sounds and feels like\, and how expressive it can be. The programme also features the captivating Versa est in Luctum by Victoria’s contemporary Alonso Lobo. \nProgramme\nAlonso Lobo Versa est in Luctum\nTomás Luis de Victoria Tenebrae Responsories and Lamentations\nTomás Luis de Victoria Requiem Mass (1605) \nTickets\nVarious prices\, depending on position – available to book via the Malvern Theatres website (please note\, however\, that the event takes place at Great Malvern Priory)

SUMMARY:Great Malvern Heritage Walk
DESCRIPTION:About the walk\nDiscover the rich heritage of one of England’s most charming spa towns\, famed for its invigorating Water Cure. \nJoin one of Malvern Civic Society’s volunteer guides to trace the town’s evolution\, from a 19th century spa destination\, to its role in World War II as an important centre for secret radar development. Along the way\, explore Victorian architecture\, Great Malvern Priory\, connections to composer Edward Elgar\, and sites celebrated through Malvern’s many blue plaques\, commemorating notable residents and visitors. \nWhether you’re a first-time visitor or a lifelong resident\, you’ll leave with a deeper appreciation for Malvern’s cultural and historical legacy. \nDates and times\nThe 90-minute tours operate every Saturday and Monday from April 2026 to October 2026\, except 13 July and 12 September\, starting at 10.30am from Malvern Tourist Information Centre on Church Street (contact: 01684 892289). \nAll walks are subject to guide availability. \nTickets\nThe cost is £7 for adults; 14 – 16 year olds go free. \nTickets are available online via TicketSource or at the Malvern Tourist Information Centre. Any tickets for a Saturday walk unsold online by noon on Friday\, or tickets for a Monday walk unsold online by 8am on Monday\, will become available to purchase through Malvern Tourist Information Centre during opening hours. Please note tickets for 14 – 16 year olds can be booked only through Malvern Tourist Information Centre (not online) \nPrivate group walks may be available – enquire directly to the TIC. \nAccessibility\nDue to the content of the tours and the hilly nature of Malvern\, these walks are not suitable for children under 14 years\, nor for anyone with mobility issues. \nDogs\nSorry – no dogs are allowed\, except assistance dogs. \nAlternative tour\nIn addition to the standard tour described above\, some guides offer a specialist tour\, by arrangement\, for those with a particular interest in the arts: “The Culture and The Cure”. SUMMARY:Elgar at the Asylum (Autumn in Malvern Festival)
DESCRIPTION:This remarkable new production allows audiences to experience the music and legacy of Sir Edward Elgar through a powerful and unexpected lens. \nElgar at the Asylum is a promenade performance that moves between multiple spaces at Malvern Theatres – cinema\, studio\, foyers and gallery – turning the whole complex into an immersive experience. It takes inspiration from Elgar’s early career as a composer\, when he was commissioned to write music for patients at the Worcester County Pauper and Lunatic Asylum\, later called Powick Hospital. This formative but often overlooked chapter becomes the starting point for a bold and moving reimagining. \nCreated by The Monday Night Club in collaboration with C&T and a host of artistic collaborators including Dancefest and Vamos Theatre\, the production places learning disabled artists at its centre. Their perspectives reshape Elgar’s story through performance\, music\, and contemporary storytelling\, exploring themes of identity\, care\, and creative voice. \nBuilt through an ambitious process of co-creation\, the work balances reverence with innovation. It honours the emotional depth of Elgar’s music while opening new interpretations of cultural heritage\, asking who has the right to tell these stories. Visually striking and emotionally resonant\, Elgar at the Asylum offers a special opportunity to experience a familiar figure anew. It is both a tribute and a provocation\, helping audiences to listen differently\, and to recognise the richness of voices too often unheard. \nSuitable for ages 15+: includes options for audiences to choose to access archival film footage and historical content from the asylum system. \nShow times\nSaturday 26 September 2026: 11.30am\, 12.15pm\, 1pm\nSunday 27 September 2026: 2pm\, 2.45pm\, 3.30pm \nTickets\n£5.60 (including booking fee) – available via the Malvern Theatres website

SUMMARY:Malvern Hills Literary Loop: Tolkien\, Lewis\, Darwin and Dickens
DESCRIPTION:Legendary fantasy authors JRR Tolkien and CS Lewis were frequent visitors to the Malvern Hills around the middle of the 20th century and the distinctive landscape may have inspired features of Middle Earth and Narnia\, like the Giant’s Cave from The Hobbit and the Victorian gas lamps from The Lion\, the Witch & the Wardrobe. \nA century earlier\, authors Charles Darwin and Charles Dickens visited Malvern for the Water Cure and most of the treatment centres and guest houses still remain. \nThe Malvern Hills Literary Loop starts at the Mr. Tumnus bench in Priory Park and heads up past Knotsford House where Dickens stayed to Lewis’s former school Cherbourg House before pausing at the Lewis Memorial in Rosebank Gardens and following the gas lamps up to St. Ann’s Well cafe. \nAfter admiring the views around North Hill\, the trail descends to Alexandra Rd where Lewis’s close friend & biographer George Sayer lived\, opposite the former home of composer Edward Elgar. \nThe loop then heads up past Montreal House where Darwin stayed during his daughter’s treatment and past Lewis & Tolkien’s favourite pub The Unicorn Inn before passing the Hobbit door and down to Malvern Priory to find Anne Darwin’s grave and potentially the original Narnian gas lamp. \nDates and booking\nThe walks are available on many dates\, often with the option of two start times on the same day. For more information\, including prices\, availability and to book. visit the Malvern Hills Literary Loop: Tolkien\, Lewis\, Darwin & Dickens page on Airbnb

SUMMARY:Finding Barry (Autumn in Malvern Festival)
DESCRIPTION:As part of their fiftieth anniversary celebrations\, the Malvern Theatre Players return to the Festival Theatre to perform a play about Barry Jackson: designer\, director\, manager\, writer and co-founder of the first Malvern Festivals.
