SUMMARY:Malvern Hills Literary Loop: Tolkien\, Lewis\, Darwin and Dickens
DESCRIPTION:Legendary fantasy authors JRR Tolkien and CS Lewis were frequent visitors to the Malvern Hills around the middle of the 20th century and the distinctive landscape may have inspired features of Middle Earth and Narnia\, like the Giant’s Cave from The Hobbit and the Victorian gas lamps from The Lion\, the Witch & the Wardrobe. \nA century earlier\, authors Charles Darwin and Charles Dickens visited Malvern for the Water Cure and most of the treatment centres and guest houses still remain. \nThe Malvern Hills Literary Loop starts at the Mr. Tumnus bench in Priory Park and heads up past Knotsford House where Dickens stayed to Lewis’s former school Cherbourg House before pausing at the Lewis Memorial in Rosebank Gardens and following the gas lamps up to St. Ann’s Well cafe. \nAfter admiring the views around North Hill\, the trail descends to Alexandra Rd where Lewis’s close friend & biographer George Sayer lived\, opposite the former home of composer Edward Elgar. \nThe loop then heads up past Montreal House where Darwin stayed during his daughter’s treatment and past Lewis & Tolkien’s favourite pub The Unicorn Inn before passing the Hobbit door and down to Malvern Priory to find Anne Darwin’s grave and potentially the original Narnian gas lamp. \nDates and booking\nThe walks are available on many dates\, often with the option of two start times on the same day. For more information\, including prices\, availability and to book. visit the Malvern Hills Literary Loop: Tolkien\, Lewis\, Darwin & Dickens page on Airbnb.

DESCRIPTION:Starting at the Florence Nightingale bench in Church Street\, this is an entertaining and informative circular walk around Great Malvern led by a Civic Society guide. SUMMARY:Helicopter rescue – what money can’t buy! (Malvern Walking Festival)
DESCRIPTION:The Midlands Air Ambulance service is the charity the Festival supports as they do a wonderful job rescuing folk injured on outside events – fortunately we’ve never needed their services. Annually they invite us to visit their air base behind Strensham motorway services on the northbound M5 just past junc 8\, where hopefully we will meet the medics and hear about the wonderful service they provide and see over the helicopter. There is of course a risk that they will be out on an emergency call\, in which case we will have to settle for an interesting presentation by one of their staff. \nAs this is a walking festival\, after the visit to the base\, we’ll drive back to Upton for a leisurely 2 mile walk around by the River Severn before departing \nYou may want to bring some liquid refreshment and snacks for the afternoon / evening. \nNo stiles and no altitude gain. \n£6.00 \nDistance: 2 miles\nDuration: 3 hours\nDifficulty: Easy\nDate: 24 May\nStart time: 5:00 pm\nWalk leader: Keith Collins\nStart location: Midlands Air Ambulance base behind Strensham services\nStrensham services on north bound M5 just junc 8\nCroome\nWR8 0BZ\nGrid reference: SO 894 407\nWhat3Words: rigs.mailings.talkative\nFurther details:\nThere is plenty of parking outside the air base but no access via public transport.
